I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. While I applaud the author's wanting to show, rather than tell, young children about the dangers of big government, I did not find this book to be well written. The book is intended to be an allegory, yet even an allegory must have internal consistencies and a thread of connection to reality. The plot takes place in an orphanage, where none of the orphans seem to be supervised or cared for by adults. None of the orphans have talked to the new caretaker, of whom they are all terrified, and the caretaker himself seems to be uninvolved in the issues facing the orphans. Even the end section outlining governmental involvement in environmental issues was confusing.
I also read the first book in this series (colossal club) and I have really come to appreciate how the author(s?) was/were able to keep the structure of the two books identical throughout both books (opening is comic, body is picture book-style, end is comic again, and epilogue is side-ways.) I'm assuming the other two books are set up the same way. If so, they may have found a completely different way of putting a story together. Very unique.
This cute book has interesting and strong characters. The messages are good and one could definitely learn from this book. Good illustrations, but I felt that the print was too small. I would not recommend this book for young children, but it's great for ages 9 and up. I actually would like to read the other books in this series.
I received this complimentary book from Goodreads.
I didn't understand these books at all. The front covers are so whimsical and cute and I had high expectations for the content but couldn't get through these short reads. I loved the personal notes the author included with the mailings. Personal touch was so nice to receive. good luck to the author!
