The golden book of biology with illustrations by Charley Harper, actually a children's book, stuns me with its beauty and scientific insight, including biophysics. Though out of print for decades, German law allows to make scans for private use - thus saving book jewels.

Gorgeous book- I'd heard about Charley Harper through friends and fell in love with his modernist style. I rescued this book from my grandparents' house after my ngin-ngin passed (Yeh-yeh was downsizing and had no need for kid books now that his kids and grandkids were grown, otherwise this would've gone to goodwill). I also have a fascination with old science texts, and it's interesting to see what the state of cutting edge biology was then, or how prehistoric events were interpreted. Remember, this was published in 1961 and therefore predates when the Alvarezes theorized and proved that an asteroid impact killed the dinosaurs, as well as before we even went to the moon (the last section wonders about life outside of Earth whether alien or ours in spaceships)!

Ah, Charley Harper, my love for you borders on obsession. Which may explain why I have once again spent more money than I can afford in acquiring your hardish-to-find books. This one is, of course, amazing. I may perhaps enjoy the Animal Kingdom slightly more simply because I am such a fan of animals, but this does take my breath away in places. That strand of DNA spiraling up the side of the page keeps appearing in my dreams as a tattoo up my spine. And the erupting volcano with clouds of ash and gas . . . I got a funny feeling low in my belly at that one.
See, now, I'm smiling just thinking about it. And I'll probably go home tonight and touch it again.
