An extraordinary life. The book was longer than it needed to be -- and in a biography of a writer I don't need plot descriptions of every one of their works -- unless it's necessary to underscore a particular point. But the book gets 4 stars because Singer himself, and his life, are that interesting to read about.

I found the author (his position) biased. There are comments and reflections that are clearly favoring Isaac Singer. While there is no law against writing a biography with heart, I personally found this book some sort of a hybrid (i.e. between a real biography and a tenuous trial for literature) ....

As the author remarks "I'd rather have a friend than a book" I certainly hope he did preserve his friendship with Singer. I never give books I read 1 * but I did drop this one halfway through. Maybe I should start now?
