"Timeless and rugged in the best way" —Amazon Reader
Award-winning poet, Christopher A. Hostettler (Tales of the Captain), has compiled fifty of the best classic poems to pass on to his sons. Strong themes of courage are woven throughout the collection, alongside lesser themes of beauty, love, and all that is worth fighting for!
Poets include Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Robert Frost, Walt Whitman, John Donne, and many others. The collection features both short and long classics, from The Road Not Taken (Frost) to Horatius at the Bridge (Macaulay). Regardless of style or topic, poet or theme, all have stood the merciless test of time and earned a place in the heart of many-a-manly man.
"There’s something boyish in the manliness of it all – like it reminds you what it means to carry weight with grace." —Amazon Reader
Five original works by Hostettler, consistent with the tone of this book, are also included as bonus poems and are sprinkled in amongst related themes.

"Reading works from timeless voices like Frost and Whitman alongside Hostettler’s powerful originals felt like sitting among giants... This book isn’t only a gift, it’s a rite of passage for every man and father." —Amazon Reader
There are some really great, classic poems here, but there’s also a lot of poems that only had the potential to be worth reading if I had the energy to sit down and attempt to decipher what they’re trying to say. I would argue that most of what was included were not “poems to live by” and that there was a fair share of stinkers too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not above doing some interpretative work, especially for something that was written 200 years ago, but with some of the poems, I didn’t even know what the purpose was supposed to be.
But I did read some pieces that I’d never heard of before and revisited some poems that I’ve really enjoyed as well. All in all, it was well worth the read.
And while I wouldn’t consider the editor a bad poet in his own right - including his own poems in a collection of what he deems to be the greatest poems of all time feels a tad pompous.
*edit* - I was looking through the table of contents after writing my review - while what I wrote above still stands, I did want to add, I really enjoyed the editor’s poem “Undaunted.” I had glossed over the title and author when I had actually read the piece, so I had no idea that it was one he had written himself until I looked over everything again. It was one of the standouts in the collection for me, so I just wanted to mention that I appreciated it!
As a father and an aspiring poet, Classic Poetry for Men deeply moved me. This isn’t just a collection of poems , it’s a legacy. Each verse speaks to courage, honor, love, and the quiet strength we pass to our sons. Reading works from timeless voices like Frost and Whitman alongside Hostettler’s powerful originals felt like sitting among giants. I find myself sharing these poems with my own children, hoping they’ll carry these words forward. This book isn’t only a gift , it’s a rite of passage for every man and father.
