Within the underground infestation of crime organizations, Pests are the most powerful, and Hunter Key has just been handed everything he's always wanted - a title as an Informant, a chair at the Inner Circle's table, and the chance to one day lead. All he has to do is one simple job - Kidnap Locklyn Elwell, the inheritor of Elwell Enterprises and collect the hefty ransom to hand over to the Pests. But through setbacks of bodyguards, security cameras, and Locklyn's impossible lack of cooperation, Hunter finds himself facing obstacles he didn't sign up for. As histories resurface and secrets come to light, Hunter's reality is shattered as he begins to question every truth he's ever known about the Elwells and more importantly, the organization he's dedicated his life to.
Maizy Ren is an art school survivor living in Illinois with her husband and pack of wild fur children. When she isn't writing or wrangling dogs, she can be found reading, hiking, or drinking Gatorade (said in Henry Winkler's voice). Probably all at once.
At this point I expect nothing less than a 5 star from this series! Maizy Ren has delivered everything we love and each book just gets better! The character development is chefs kiss! Enemies to lovers, forbidden romance, touch her and 💀, self identity. SLOW BURN! Ugh I just can’t get over how obsessed I am with this story and these characters. I fear I might be in a reading hangover after this series!
Perfect for mafia romance lovers. Even though this series is classified as dark romance. The romance part isn’t dark imo BUT there are dark themes since this series involved an underground organization (gang) some shady things happen but if your worried if it’s to dark it’s definitely not!
Okay!! I never write reviews but it came to my attention these are Maizy Rens first books!? So I feel that deserved some attention 👏🏼
I’m loving the series & the “touch her & 💀” vibes. I also appreciate that Locklyn has some jealousy tendencies as well, considering most FMC aren’t that way & it’s always the men.
The reason I’m rating 4 stars vs 5, is I really don’t love the high school aspects, I feel these are more college vibes. & because I find myself needing more answers by the end of each book. I’m getting to the point where I’m getting aggravated with some of these loose ends 😂 but that could just be a me problem..
Overall a great series & I find myself grabbing my kindle every spare moment I have 👏🏼✨
I felt so broken with part 2 left me in tears and lonely (yk yk) but part 3 really brought me together and felt the healing through locklyn. Plus heh alk the times hunter stood up for her? Ooooo I was kicking my feet and giggling each time. I’m so scared and excited to get started on part 4. I just love them both so much.
P.S. spoilers in a way….After and Conrad LOVE them they have my whole heart <3 best side couple
"I fed up with you" him: "good I'm fed up with you too". The way this series had me obsessed can barely be put into words. I finished part one of the series on Saturday and I have now completed the four part series within a span of a few days. This was a five star read for me. I normally like fantasy reads, but this one has me wanting more

This series has completely captured my heart. The way the story has drawn me in and the connection I feel to these characters makes it feel as though I’m living right alongside them.
The character development is nothing short of masterful, and the love unfolding between the main characters has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster. I’m giggling and kicking my feet one moment, crying with them the next, and holding my breath as I brace for the inevitable twist—I just know it’s coming.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Maizy’s writing is pure magic. Her vivid, detailed storytelling brings every scene to life without ever feeling repetitive. I could lose myself in this world forever. I keep telling myself to slow down and savor it, but I just can’t help devouring every page.
What I especially love is how authentic and grounded the story feels. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, nor does it rely on unrealistic drama. The characters face challenges that feel genuine, and Maizy gives them the time and space to work through their emotions in a way that’s raw, real, and healing. Nothing feels rushed or glossed over—these characters aren’t brushing off their traumas or using quick fixes to move on.
This series is a journey, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you’re looking for a story that will immerse you, move you, and stay with you long after the final page, this is the one.
Okay okay this did NOT go how I thought, it was much better.
Locklyn is obviously distraught after the shooting and Hunter did disappear on her for a lil spell but he’s back and better than ever!!! i don’t really recall the beginning of this, aside from the sorrow. I really felt it. Maizy girl got me in my feels about dayton. I’m loving that Af is dating guard boy!!! obsessed w that. Tray was an honorable mention for this one, i think he’s a good person!
this one had less of that “i wish this was fantasy” however I do stand on the business of this story could have been insane written w some magic systems & fae or somethin somethin.
the scene with the golden retriever I am like genuinely truly never going to recover from. and truthfully could have lived my whole life without reading that. heartbreaking. :-(
loving this! starting the next one!!! gimmie the HEA i’m waiting for
also came back to add that if i read this in high school/my early 20s (im 28 ew) i would have lived for it. it would have made 19 year old me spiral in the best way - but we’re making do

Again, this book absolutely blew me away and I fall in love with this series more and more each time. Maizy Ren is a magical unicorn with her way to write so raw and realistic. The dark themes of the gang world are so perfectly balanced with the pure innocence of the love story between Locklyn and Hunter. Hunter is a consent king and so unbelievable perfect.
I’m still broken over the ending of book two. Please don’t talk to me about that ever because I will cry on the spot. But, I love getting more from Conrad and am so interested in what’s going on with him and After.
I will forever read anything written by Maizy Ren and she has become and auto-buy author for me for life.
The fact that Hunter left her for so long alone… this made me so upset! 😭 Things do eventually start to heat up between Hunter and Lock! At some point I know this story is going to blow up in my face because of how many things that they are keeping from each other!

The way Hunter falls and struggles to reconcile everything is enjoyable to read. I feel like both characters were written very true to age and reactions.
Though there are still red flags everywhere I was still left guessing who’s good and who’s bad
If your looking for a dark romance series where he’s from the wrong side of the tracks and she’s the untouchable heiress this series is for you. A host of characters, some who are darker than you think, and a twist I didn’t see coming....
He has one job to achieve what he wants in life. Falling in love with her was never a part of the plan.
Book 3 amps up Hunter and Locklyn's relationship. There are also a lot of things that happen that could make or break them. As lies and betrayal grow, Locklyn begins to connect some dots, all while Hunter continues to try to find a way to keep her....
“Whatever this is, its too strong. And I know for a fact I’ll never find it again.”
