Biographical portrait of Victoria's first Lieutenant-Governor. La Trobe arrived in Melbourne in 1839 as Superintendent of the Southern, or Port Philip, District of New South Wales. He faced problems on transportation, demands for representative government and the fantastic economic and social consequences of the gold discoveries.
