How cool would it be if you could sit down with a legend like Cecil B Demille and find out all of his secrets to success? I think it would be super cool!

That is what the book Ready When You Are by author Robert Hammond is all about. It centers around the 10 Commandments for his success and is something of a self help book. It explains how each commandment should be followed to make you a more complete and better version of yourself.

Cecil B Demille was, of course, a legend in Hollywood and is said to actually be the man that invented it. With just $5,000 and the backup of a couple of other men, Cecil set out for Hollywood to bring to life his dream of making motion pictures. The author uses references Demilles life to give you tips on how to become successful and effective in business. In addition, the book also shows how you can have ethics and values, while at the same time becoming very successful.

The book is aptly named since one of Cecils biggest accomplishments in the industry was the making of the movie, The Ten Commandments, in 1923. Just a tid bit about that movie: He was able to build an entire city for this movie then after filming was over, he had the entire set buried, where it lay for over 60 years! The set was uncovered in 1983 by some film buffs. Pretty interesting!

This was a quick read for me because it was very interesting – I highly recommend it!

In Ready When You Are: Cecil B. DeMille's Ten Commandments for Success, some of DeMille's life lessons are shared. The book echoes of the author's previous book so if you already read that one, some of the stories will be repeats for you. Don't be put off the by the grainy picture on the cover of this book. This book really contains an excellent message. Each of the chapters ends with a meaningful "commandment " for success. Although most of the "commandments" are common sense, I liked the way they were tied in with DeMille's personal stories. This is a quick read that would be great as a devotion in a small group setting or as a meditation message at church. If you are a public speaker, this would be a great resource to use as reference material. Ready When You Are is a book that would be an excellent choice to take on a short flight or another time when you have a few minutes to read. It can be read cover-to-cover in an hour or so, and the message will stay with you.

I received a copy of this book to review. The opinions are 100% mine.

I liked “Ready When You Are: Cecil B. DeMille's Ten Commandments For Success” by Robert Hammond, but I don't like the description on the back, which is also listed on the amazon sales page. Because of that, I had difficulty deciding between 3 and 4 stars. I went with 3. I'll explain why on both accounts.

I found the book interesting as I've always enjoyed film, and respected Cecil B. DeMille as a filmmaker, even though I didn't know much about him. With this book, I got to learn more about the man behind the films, and that I liked. I also liked the ten commandments: Be Humble, Be Amazed, Be Ready, Be Wise, Be Steadfast, Be Courageous, Be Spectacular, Be Visionary, Be Truthful, and Be Generous. These lessons are very short. The Prologue starts on page 9, two short stories about DeMille starting on pages 15 and 19, and finally the commandments begin on page 23. They end on page 63, and a number of pages are blank or contain very little text. This makes the lessons very short and quick to read. The lessons also contain excerpts from the author's novel and adapted screenplay, so really the lessons are basically excerpts from the novel with one sentence “lessons” at the end of the excerpt. With that said, I still enjoyed these excerpts and the lessons are valid.

After a two page Epilogue, the remainder of the book contains several articles: “The Bible as Blockbuster – The Influence of Cecil B. DeMille's Biblical Epics” by Robert Hammond (pages 67-78); “Cecil DeMille also speaks” by Peter Milne (1922) (pages 79-88); “Motion Picture Directing” by Cecil B. DeMille (1927) (pages 89-118); and “The Screen as a Religious Teacher” by Cecil B. DeMille(1927) (pages 119-124). It ends with a brief plug for the author's biopic on the director and about the author.

Now the part I didn't care for, the description that states, “In this powerful book comparable to such classics as “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” “Think and Grow Rich,” and “Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun...” I've read all of those, and Covey's 7 Habits sets a pretty high bar, as do the other two. I read that description when the author offered to send me the book. That description influenced me to give the book a read. Unfortunately, this book comes nowhere close to those three classic books. To suggest it does, to me, is quite misleading. I understand promotion, but I felt this was too far of a stretch. If anyone can take this book, side by side with those above, and put them in the same category, it's beyond me how they do it.

Again, I liked reading the book. I think it could stand on its own with a description of: “Using excerpts from his novel, Hammond shares ten principles that made the director great.” Or something like that. I wish the author wouldn't have put my expectations so high with his promotion, because then maybe I wouldn't have felt this way about a nice little book.

What if a legendary director who invented Hollywood offered his personal secrets to great achievement?

Well this is the premise of the new book Ready When You are by Robert Hammond. Cecil Demille was known as the man who invented Hollywood. With the support of his wife, and the financial backing of 2 men, and 5000, h headed to California to make motion pictures. temporally, leaving his wife and child behind, he followed a dream. While he did fall into the trap that those creative types tend to fall into while living the Hollywood live, he removed and went back to a spiritual way of thinking. He, subsequently, went on to make many groundbreaking films, which included The 10 Commandments in 1923 among many others. DeMille's wisdom, success, and wealth increased beyond imagination. In today's terms he would be said to be a billionaire.

The book is broken into 10 commandments. The commandments are explained in about a page or two using an example or short story from DeMille's life. The author points out the small things that get lost in life that make people a success, like "Let your life continually be filled with a sense of amazement"

The book closes with an appendix of more information about the life of Cecil DeMille. It goes more in-depth about specifics of his life and achievements.

Ready When You Are is a wonderful book to help you realize habits of successful and effective people and hot to add them to your thinking.

There are a ton of self improvement books on the market, so forgive me if I'm a little suspicious. This book however is a little bit of a twist on the self improvement genre. It tells the story of Cecil B. Demille and tells how the advice worked for him, instead of just suggesting information. It makes for a much more interesting read, as well as more useful advice.
