It was interesting reading this on the heels of The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences as it covers the same centuries of the development of western philosophy. Whereas Michel Foucault gave a more narrative telling, this is more like a textbook or encyclopedia on the topic. The article-like chapters are often followed by extensive bibliographies and biographical capsules that, along with the frequent footnotes, this is more for guided research. Want to know of the key figures and books on the development of Sensualism or where Hobbes fits into the timeline? This book covers such topics with all the pointers needed for further reading.
For me, I walk way with impressions confirming some things I feel I have picked up on the topic of philosophical development. For me, I see millennia of fear-managing fairy tales leading to a painful separation from magico-religious superstition to the struggle of idealism vs. nominalism as mankind tries to understand the reality we find ourselves in and how knowledge is possible.
This review refers to this particular edition by "Forgotten Books". They did a poor job. Several pages are only half printed suggesting an indifferent photocopying procedure.
