I have just begun my writing journey and have finished my first novella completely written by me!

I enjoy horror, fantasy and post-apocalyptic fiction.

Lately I've been reading screen plays while watching the movie. It's interesting to see the translation from the written word to the visual.

I hope to some day be able to write full time.

*Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book via a giveaway held by goodreads, in exchange for an honest, un-biased opinion.

This is a short summary of my actual review, which will be posted on my blog, BlissfulBooks.com, shortly.

First off, Whoa. I'm going to say this again, Debut novels are never perfect, most no where near it, but Alice+Milo was near close. I loved almost every part of it. The plot is engrossing, the characters are charming, and the story is fresh.

Of course, there were the moot points as well. The only thing that really bugged me about this book is that it was WAAAYYYY too short. Yes, I understand it is a novella, but to be quite honest, I think it should be re-written in to a proper-size novel. Some points in the story were rushed, and require more time and detail in order to understand them completely. I also think that a longer novel means more time for Alice and Milo's characters to develop further, and for their relationship to flourish.

Overall, it was a great read! It was certainly unique, and quite refreshing, if you ask me. I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for other books by this author, considering the only place I see them going is up.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'll tell you why:

There were some really great things about this. A lot of them. I thought that the entire plot and story was just awesome, and the idea was very cool. I really liked the characters and it had action, adventure, romance, and horror.

Unfortunately the story isn't all that matters. The experience matters too, and I thought it was too short. I don't think this should've been a novella, I think that it should've been a novel. Things were very rushed, such as the romance. I understand that they have known each other since they were children, but it's been eight years. You'd think that they would have to learn about them again, instead of instantly falling back in love with them. One of the things I love about romance is seeing the relationship develop, but you don't really get that here.

Another thing is that there are tons of information dumps. One chapter you'll know nothing and the next it's piling on top of everything else that's going on. You have to spread out the information because otherwise the readers are very overwhelmed, and in my case, it causes confusion.

The ending...

So I know this sounded really harsh, but honestly, I did enjoy it while reading it, these are just my thoughts after it was finished. I think that for R.A. Marvel's first story she did an amazing job, I really enjoyed her writing throughout this book. I will be keeping my eyes open for any books she writes in the future.

Disclosure: I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

I won't give a summary of the book, that can be read in other places. I am just giving my review and thoughts.

Bottom line up front (BLUF), I did like the book. Mystery, suspense, horror...what is not to like.

This novella had some "first time author" type issues, but was entertaining. I had no hesitations on continuing the book where I left off the night before.

This book reminds me of an abridged copy (something similar to a Readers Digest Condensed book). Much of the story seemed rushed. This hurts a little bit in the beginning when trying to set the stage of the town or the re-acquaintance of Alice & Milo, but helps with the urgency of trying to escape.

From a guys point of view, I thank the author for not making the romance between the two teens too "chick-lit", though I don't think much of it was necessary. It seemed kind of like a movie that threw in some T&A for the sake of having T&A.

As for a more technical review:
--There were a couple of places in the first few chapters where I would have probably used a comma for a pause in language, but it didn't take away from the story.

--Another change I might make was in the chapter with Ellis and Win. Other than introducing the character (full first and last name), the author uses Win throughout, until near the end of the chapter, which turns into Banks (last name).

--I did catch a time or two in which I believe the narrator was swearing, vs a characters' thought or voice. In my opinion, not needed.

Like stated earlier, I like the book, and would probably pick up the sequel if R.A. Marvel continues the story line. I am by no means a book critic, but I see the potential of great stories in a mixed genre of Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

Honest opinion this book is odd. There were a couple of grammatical errors, which as a teacher, drove me crazy.

I thought it was going to be a love story, but it turned sci-fi about a third of the way through.
