Miriam is a proud gladiator champion, but an unexpected brain injury leads to her ruined career. She's been given the perfect opportunity to heal, but she’d rather accept fate on her own terms. She catches the attention of the fiercest caladrius on the island. He’s an opponent she can’t beat and a reckless force she cannot resist. Will she finally take the cure or will she fight her monster to the death?
Leander is one of the leaders of the caladrius healers. When Miriam rejects every healer she’s been given, he steps in to get her cured and off the island. He’s never taken a human charge. They are the enemy and he hates that Miriam has forced him to break his vow of solitude. Will he succeed in curing the most stubborn human woman to land on Cantamen, or will he fall to her sword like everyone else?

ARC review Miriam and Leander had all the grumpy vibes going on and were traumatized in different ways. They formed a meaningful bond because of that trauma although their beginning was less than stellar. I liked that Miriam was a badass gladiator and held her own with Leander. Their story was messy and sweet.
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: violence, gore, murder, drugging/poisoning, hallucinations, trauma responses, grief, death of partner and child (off page)
I absolutely adored this enemies to lovers romance! It is beautifully written with the most sweet love story once they get past their animosity for one another 😆 Miriam is a badass gladiator woman that comes to Cantamen to be cured of the diseases that plague her. Leander is a Rex Ales, one of the leaders of the Caladrius, who is summoned to heal this stubborn gladiator that refuses the cure. He just wants her off his island, she just wants to be left alone. Ultimately they team up to solve a mystery and a relationship starts to blossom 😍
Mary Jung does such a fantastic job creating characters with so much depth; issues of grief and mistrust, ptsd from abuse, along with the diseases that plague Miriam. I also loved the duality of the characters, specifically Miriam. I loved that she was super strong and tough as a gladiator but also showed her softer side once she gets close to Leander. Healing, love, banter, mystery… Salvaged by the Rex Ales has it all.
I’m hoping to return to Cantamen again and again in the future 💕
This book was hot as hell... a story of healing, strength, mystery and intrigue, this story follows Miriam and Leander one mortal, one birdman on a journey through healing and acceptance. Forging a bond that not only heals but brings both the strength needed to grow... oh and I nearly forgot... the scenes are 🥵🥵🥵... can't wait for more!!
Beautifully written healing comfort. Lots of action and wit. Mary is a master at highlighting mental and physical health. We get it at its worse and at its healing. These two have so much damage that no one else could ever help them heal. The empathy and growth from the characters is perfectly displayed.
4.5/5 This is book two in the Monsters of Medela series but it can be read as a standalone. It’s a little different than the first. This one has all the romance of the first book but it felt spicier! It’s very spicy from almost the get go. There’s some fighting action and a little bit of mystery to figure out.
There’s also some potential triggers because this deals with the loss of a significant other and a brain injury. Be sure to check out Mary’s website for the content warnings if you have any triggers!
Leander was grumpy 😂 and Miriam is a certified BA! She held her own and I loved them together. I loved how they each healed each other. Leander turned into such a dirty talker and Miriam continued to be the baddie she always was.
This is a spicy book. Did I mention that? There’s even some spice going on while they’re flying!
Anyways, if monster romance is your jam then you should definitely check this out. It’s everything you think it would be 😍🖤
Gleeful Goblin Review: As someone with multiple disabilities, both visible and not, I can't even express how much it means to me to see incredible fiction that also reflects my lived experience. Just because my mind and body have some additional struggles doesn't make me or these characters less worthy of love, partnership, and care. I really (sadly) understand how and why our FMC Miriam pushes away so many of the healers who have tried to help her. When you've had to be "tough" or "show no weakness" for whatever reasons, it's almost impossible to let that guard down. So this scene of Miriam explaining that feeling to Leander resonated for me HARD. "She shook her arms as if they pained her and glared. “The caladrius caregivers are too kind. I’m not impressed with their fussing and preening. It’s nauseating. I am a champion, yet they treat me like I’m a delicate baby.” “Doesn’t explain why you won’t complete the ritual.” “How am I supposed to bond with a creature that simpers and dotes on me, instead of motivating me to get better? I don’t trust them. It seems fake.” Leander’s feathers bristled at her tone. “They are there to help you, not cater to your ego.” Miriam raised her chin and stated, “Fate favors those who seek their own paths. I’ve learned to fight for everything I want. Find me a caladrius that will inspire me to receive the cure, and I’ll do it.” A calculated path wended through Leander’s mind at her words. “I might have a caladrius that can fulfill these requirements,” Leander cast it out as a mild suggestion, but he already had her hooked. There was a subtle perk of her features at his words. Miriam did not so much as flick her gaze as she waited for him to impress her. The silence was as much of a dare as her words. She wanted him to impress her; to hand over control and bow to her needs. That would never happen. Leander shoved off the pillar and flexed his claws. “The caladrius are birds-of-prey. We hunt, we observe, and we hanker for prey. Is that what you are looking for, Miriam? A beast that will prowl and roar at you?” “It would improve matters. At least I’d understand that behavior,” she muttered with a noncommittal response. Leander crossed the room and hovered an inch from her irritated stance. He dragged a talon down her cheek and crooned into her mind. “Then I have the perfect candidate for you.” “Oh?” She faked her disinterest well. “Who might that be?” He tipped her chin up with the point of his claw. Leaning in to hover over her pursed mouth, he let his beak come dangerously close. “Me.”
This is a rare book where it's hurt/comfort in pretty equal measure on both sides for these two. They both have invisible wounds that need to heal but both have been stubbornly unwilling to allow that healing to happen. Even if it's slowly ending everything that each of them are. Both characters are fierce, proud, tough, and so very isolated and alone. They've gone through separate hardships but the end result of never feeling safe with others, or really even with themselves is exactly the same for them both. Seeing those walls slowly come down, seeing them understand themselves and the other person better as they heal together is absolutely magical. 5/5 Stars.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thank you so much to Mary E Jung for the opportunity to read and review this book!!
Salvaged by the Rex Ales is a standalone fantasy monster romance and book two in the Monsters of Medela series. Miriam was a gladiator star, but now she’s struggling with a brain injury. She travels to the renowned Caladrius healers to hopefully fix the numerous injuries and traumas she’s suffered over the years. But when she refuses all the healers, Leander steps in to save her, whether she wants it or not
This was such a fun read! Miriam is such a strong character and I loved her healing in this story. Leander was such a good match for her and I loved how they both healed through their relationship together. This is such a fun world and I really enjoyed the way the world expanded from the first book
Overall this was a five star read! I enjoyed these characters and their story a lot!! This book does touch on some heavy topics, so please check triggers if you’re sensitive. This book was a fast burn, had non-human anatomy and had many spicy scenes throughout, so overall four flames for spice
If you’re a fan of strong characters that both need some healing, fun banter and unique world building, then absolutely pick this one up! While this can be read as a standalone, you’ll get the most out of cameos and the story if you read book 1 first.
Mary has done it again. Her descriptive writing and storytelling have expanded the world of Saved by the Caladrius. Salvaged by the Rex Ales was a fantastic read that pulled me right back into the world. This one follows FMC Miriam—a stubborn, badass gladiator in dire need of healing—and MMC Leander—one of the elite Rex Ales and one of the original Caladrius birds. Both are stubborn to the core and have traumatic backgrounds that they help each other heal.
Miriam's character is physically and mentally strong, and is not one for pity. She's been on the island for months and turned away several Caladrius' that have attempted to heal her. In comes big, bad, grumpy Leander who doesn't give Miriam much of a choice - he's her last chance. Together they're explosive and have some all-out brawls as they get used to one another and start their journeys to healing. During their healing, secrets are discovered that rock both their worlds and set them on a path neither expected.
Just like in Saved by the Caladruis, this is spicy! The spice is explicit, but it isn't raunchy. This book is fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I hope she continues this world, as there are characters whose stories I would love to read.
Miriam (h) is a gladiator-champion in the arena—fierce, undefeated, and slowly dying from an illness no one could explain. Cast out by the people who used her, she’s forced to confront the truth: she’s not just broken—she was poisoned. Leander (H) is a Rex Ales, a mutated caladrius warrior whose healing magic is meant to cure mortals… through mating. Haunted by a violent past and the death of his mate, he agrees to take on the impossible task of curing Miriam. But Miriam doesn’t want a savior. She wants answers. What starts as reluctant healing turns into a fight against a system built on exploitation, lies, connection, and biological manipulation. As secrets unravel and soul-bonds form, Miriam and Leander realize this isn’t just about survival. It’s about revenge, justice, and rewriting the rules of power. Together, they’ll take on a corrupt empire, rogue magic, and a past that refuses to stay buried. A steamy, reluctant soul mates, enemies to lovers, monster romance with heat, heavy stakes, and heart, exploring connection, action, vulnerability, agency, healing, trauma recovery, found family, and love forged in chaos.
This was an emotional rollercoaster of a story of mutual healing and finding love after trauma.
Miriam is on Cantamen to be healed by a Caladrius. Her life as a gladiator has be hard and brutal, and she trusts no one. Leander is a Rex Ales, a leader of his people, tasked with healing Miriam when her case proves more complicate than originally thought. He is battling his own demons of the past and wants nothing more than to heal his charge and send her away. They both want nothing of love, but also can't fight their growing attraction.
This book was wonderful look into hurt/comfort, mutual healing, recovery from trauma, and the impacts of illness on a person and a relationship. And it does all that while also being super spicy. Leander's anatomy is not human at all, and it is put to good use. The exploration of differences is one of the hottest parts of the book.
This is a great read for anyone looking for comfort in healing with a large dose of spice alongside!
“Salvaged by the Rex Ales” delivers everything I crave in a monster romance—intensity, heart, and spice! 🔥
Miriam is a battle-hardened gladiator, stubborn to the core, even when a brain injury threatens to take everything from her. Enter Leander, the brooding, no-nonsense healer who refuses to let her self-destruct. Their chemistry? Off the charts. The tension? Deliciously unbearable. And when it finally snaps—whew, the spice is perfection!
“You are a menace to my entire resolve. I will never want anyone but you after this. I didn’t even know I wanted anything so badly, until you hacked your way into my world.”
This book hits all the right notes—gritty action, deep emotion, and an enemies-to-lovers romance that burns so good. If you love strong-willed heroines, reluctant but obsessive heroes, and monster romance with serious heat, Salvaged by the Rex Ales is a must-read.
This is the second book in the Monsters & Medela series. However, it CAN be read as a standalone.
This book has enemies to lovers, banter, reluctant fated mates, a mystery to solve, and a whole lot of 🌶️.
OK. So let’s get down to it. This was an interesting read. 😉 Lets just say they have an interesting way to heal the mortals.
You have your grumpy Monster MMC with a traumatic past who is a loner and your FMC who is a bad a gladiator with her own dramatic past and a neurological injury.
The banter between these two was fantastic. I loved how they helped each other heal. Leander (MMC) went from I hate all mortals to I hate all mortals but you. He was a sweet monster with a dirty mouth. 😈 Let just say we found out why beaks are better 😉 among other things. Miriam… well what can I say except that she started out the book as a Bad A with an injury and end it as a bad a. 😂 I enjoyed this book a lot.
I love it when a Monster Romance has a tender budding relationship that neither of them expected. That's what you'll find in this book. The steam happens fairly early because Miriam is in Leander's domain for a cure, and how that cure is given is soooo spicy! All of the spice is extremely hot 🔥 Things simmer down for awhile though and it becomes this reluctant romance between two beings who do truly want to understand eachother. This is not that inst-love that you often get from a soul bond story. There's actual relationship building and personal growth on both sides. Which I genuinely enjoyed. The plot also contains a mystery and I'm always a sucker for mysteries.
This series is very quickly earning a special place in my heart for so many reasons and I really enjoyed Miriam and Leander’s story.
Mary’s use of detailed and descriptive language really makes this story come to life. The romance between the two main characters accompanied both the healing journey and the intriguing overarching mystery throughout the story, while also being incredibly spicy. Leander sure is one incredibly sexy bird-man with a dirty mouth/beak.
Miriam and Leanders character arc was complex but so special. Their dynamic was messy and real as they guided each other to heal in the way that they needed. I also loved how their banter slowly morphed into a love language between them as the story progressed.
Please make sure to check the content warnings before reading as this book handles serious themes of trauma from a violent past, as well as dementia and PTSD.
This is the second installment to the Monsters of Medela series, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it, even more so than the first book. I am genuinely drawn to the world of Cantamen and wish to discover a portal to explore it further, lol. I loved the dynamic between Miriam and Leander, particularly their banter and the enemies-to-lovers theme that develops between them. The two formed a bond over shared hardships and challenging circumstances, which I found endearing. I absolutely loved them as a couple😍
Oh, and the spice was spiiiiiiiiiccccciiiiinnnng! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This book packs in a lot! Not only is there a ton of spice (because hello - birdmen healing patients with seminal fluids), but there's also mystery, intrigue, emotional healing, and a HEA. I really enjoyed the push/pull banter between Miriam and Leander and how they heal each other along their journey. I also really enjoyed the world building and meeting some of the other characters, especially the flirtatious Iason who gave off some serious himbo energy - I hope we get to see more of him in the future! Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and I'm looking forward to reading more of the series!
I am going to be thinking about this one for a long time. Seriously, I don't know what Mary put in this, but I am obsessed. Heavy on the spice but with SUCH A GOOD STORYLINE! I was invested in Miriam and Leander's story from the very start. Fierce stabby FMC, Grumpy brooding MMC, enemies to lovers? Sign a girl, uppp! I absolutely loved the idea of healing fluids, but of course, Miriam and Leander's experience wasn't your typical healing and led us on such an incredible story! I can not wait to see what the future of the Monsters of Medela series holds!
Expect: 💙 Fig favored healing 💦 🪽 C*ck pocket & fancy peen 💙 Pierced FMC 🥵 🪽 Spicy air time 💙 Happy ever after
I mean monster romance with a fancy peen will always brighten my day!
I really enjoyed this book just as well as I did the first one, but Leander being more unhinged makes me love him more 🤭
Both Miriam’s chronic health issue and Leander’s mental health issues are so well-written. I always love seeing these topics represented in books.
I think it made their romance better since they are both damaged people, broken by their past and present circumstances, but they found solace with each other and became each other’s safe place.
And there’s also the spice which with his fancy peen is hot hot hot 🥵🥵🥵
This is the second book in the Monsters of Medela series. Mary has outdone herself with this story. I absolutely love her style of writing and how creative these books are. I love how her books are based off her own life experiences. It’s something I absolutely adore about Mary. Miriam is the proud gladiator champion whose mental decline stems from a brain injury. She needs to heal but has turned down the opportunity to do so. I love the world that Mary has made here. There were many moments within the book that I kept saying to myself oh my goodness. They were definitely a good oh my goodness moments. I couldn’t get enough of this book.
This was such a great read that brought healing to two people that really needed it. Both Miriam, a gladiator, and Leander, a Rex Ales leader, have trauma in their pasts so there is a lot to overcome. However rough their relationship started, though, they had chemistry and banter down pat ;) Of course, there's some intrigue and mystery to deal with as well, so be prepared for a page turning read with strong characters. I loved seeing them find their way to a fab and steamy HEA. I definitely recommend keeping a cool drink near by when you dive into this one - it's a hot one ;P I'm really looking forward to the next book :D
I absolutely devoured this book and would’ve finished in a day if I didn’t have to be an adult and work 😩
It took me a minute to warm up to Miriam’s character, but once I got to know her, everything started to make sense and you feel for her. I’m sure a lot of independent people and those who were forced to grow up at a young age can relate to her, I know I did. And don’t even get me started on our grumpy MMC! Leander is a whole mood and I am all for it! That’s all I’m willing to say about Leander in fear of giving away the book.
I love a good monster romance, and this one was giving! Both Miriam (fmc) and Leander (mmc) are grumpy and stubborn. It made for such a great romance aspect! They teamed up to solve a mystery together. There is a lot of trauma, but a lot of healing in this book. Overall, it was a great read.
Please read the CW before diving into this one.
Tɾσρҽʂ: 🤍 Enemies to Lovers 🤍 Touch Her and be Unalived 🤍 Reluctant Mates 🤍 Eyes on Me 🤍 Fancy Monster Peen 🤍 STFUATTMCLAGG 🤍 A Mystery They Are Forced to Solve Together
So this book is so dissimilar to book one, and I mean that in the best way possible. This book has a stubborn gladiator FMC named Miriam who does not want to be coddled or have that coziness we saw with Elora and Osias from the first book. She gets the more stubborn male version of herself who has undergone as much trauma as her. Leander has a filthy sass talking beak, or mind since he speaks telepathically, and doesn't sugar coat things with Miriam.
The other thing that's different in this book is there is a crazy mystery to solve. Not as cozy as one was expecting, this book makes you work for the ending. Good soup (not really, don't eat the soup).
This book also made me retract my stance on monsters with beaks. Did you see Leander on the cover? 🥵🥵🥵
Had to wait to finish this ARC where there weren't prying/nosy eyes because it was getting 🔥
Um dayuuum the mouth on Leander... This was a good story with both spice and suspense. The FMC- Miriam is strong, fierce, and independent but still has that softer femme side to her with Leander- just an all around baddie.
Very well written. I love how her books all have characters with different illness/diseases and how their journey to heal is not a straightforward path. Her books have some very detailed explicit scenes which if you are into you will love! If not then reader discretion advised! I love how her books pull me and how the characters are so relatable to our real lives. You cannot go wrong with any of these books. This one has it all. The monsters, the female warrior. The journey along the way.
Ok let me just say one thing. CORKSCREW MONSTER PEEN. I've got your attention now don't I you little minx •e Never in my life would I have thought l'd be drooling over a bird/human hybrid but HERE WE ARE. Seriously I loved every second of this book. Miriam is fierce and charming as hell and Leander is such a clinical grump (at least in the beginning) They help each other heal their past traumas while having some EXTRA spicy times and late it up.
Salvaged by the Rex Ales is book two in the Monsters of Medela series but it can be read as a standalone.
This is a story of healing, intrigue and mystery with romance and spice, lots of spice!
Mary does an amazing job creating a story and characters with depth. If you love a story of a unique world with strong characters that need healing, have fun banter and spice, then you should read this book!
who knew a birdman could be so hot. Things got spicy here. I was grinning when I found out their sperm had healing properties. Don't get me started on his Peen, lol. I loved that Miriam and Rex were there for each other in a way that they both knew they needed. Miriam is such a warrior, I enjoyed a strong FMC 💪 ❤️ i enjoyed this read
I absolutely adore this series! This was a beautifully written second book in the series! Mary Jung is an incredible writer! There so much depth that goes into her books. Enemy to lovers is one of my favorites. I can't wait for the next book!
