5 ⭐️ yo…. this book was so insightful on the world we already knew, filled in lots of blanks. at first it took me awhile to get through yes but i loved it! the lore of the aspis and ikhor are just so well thought out and ugh Brekt and Liv 🥵 but now i gotta wait to hear about the homies in book 3!!! well done Sarah!!! 💕💕
ARC Review - 5 stars! I absolutely love this series!
Having read the first book a year ago, I was so excited to be back in this world. The world-building is incredible, with so much depth and detail added to the lore surrounding these characters. The romance is everything and more - the yearning between these characters is absolutely chef’s kiss ✨. What really makes this stand out is the character development - every new character is so unique and adds a new layer to the story, while also being back with those familiar characters was everything. The ending left me with so many questions and I am already counting down the days until book three is released.
i was extremely fortunate enough to receive an ARC and WOW! i loved book 2! the pace of the storytelling was great, so much character growth especially for Liv, lots of action, and just the right amount of spice
ARC review! Liv’s journey through found family, betrayal, power, and forced identity is so rich with tension and heartache. There’s a real beauty in how she starts with hope, a community, a budding romance, only to have it ripped away just as she finds her footing. And then she’s thrust into a new role, not of her choosing, surrounded by people who don’t necessarily care for her, but for what she represents.
The contrast between Liv’s desire for connection and the way people see her as a symbol or vessel is powerful. It’s painful, too, especially the emotional fallout of losing Brekt not just physically, but relationally. The love that might’ve been, now distorted by circumstance.
It speaks to that quiet, ongoing burden of having to survive and carry on, even when you didn’t ask for any of it. Liv can’t catch a break, unfortunately but it makes you root even harder for her! She’s so easy to relate to because she’s not perfect
I love these characters, they are so beautifully written and I can’t wait for book 3!
The Rise of the Ikhor pulled me back into Arde like I never left—and then promptly ripped my heart out and whispered, “You weren’t ready.”
Let’s talk about Maev first. I am OBSESSED. She’s the kind of no-nonsense, razor-sharp, emotionally perceptive queen we need more of. Maev doesn’t coddle Liv, doesn’t let her wallow, and absolutely does not put up with her self-destructive nonsense. But she sees her. Pushes her. Challenges her. And their dynamic? Gave me life.
But the heartbreak of watching Liv and Nuo’s friendship unravel? Oh, it hurt. Watching two people who used to be everything for each other become strangers? That slow, painful decay was so raw and real. I wanted to scream at them to just talk—but also? The tension was immaculate.
The deeper we get into the world of the gods and the Council’s secrets, the more deliciously tangled everything becomes. There are hidden histories, corrupted power, divine manipulation… you name it. And Liv is just trying to survive it all while questioning everything, including herself.
Then we have Olivia and Brekt. Ohhhh, these two. Their relationship is such a slow, aching struggle to find each other again, and it gutted me. They’re trying, but the wounds between them run deep. And that palace bedroom scene??? 🥵🥵🥵 Let’s just say if there were any doubts about the chemistry still being there… they are GONE. Holy heatwave, Brekt.
Why not five stars? There were moments I wanted a little more emotional resolution between certain characters (stares pointedly at a certain heartbroken duo), but overall? This was a layered, emotional journey full of pain, power, and perseverance.
Final thoughts: If you’re into divine chaos, slow-burn reunions, friendships that break your heart, and heroines on the edge of self-discovery, The Rise of the Ikhor delivers.
The character development?? Chef’s kiss. I easily fell in love with Ollo and Maev (please, sweet Ollo, be okay… I’m still holding onto hope 😭). Khazi is my GIRL, and I’ve got a theory. 👀 My eye is on you.
And Brekt and Liv finally coming together? 🔥🔥🔥 The slow burn was SO worth the wait—everything I anticipated and more. Their journey, alongside Nuo’s, from being completely lost to reclaiming their strength and purpose, was beautiful and so emotionally satisfying.
I adored watching Liv come into herself and grow more confident—finally recognizing her own strength. Her friendship with Maev was one of my favorite parts. Maev didn’t coddle her or feed into her self-pity, and I loved her for it. That tough love hit exactly right.
Also, can we just talk about Nuo?? His digs at Fahliza gave me LIFE. “That’s called a power move, hun. I thought I would point it out since you’re shit at them.” ICONIC. Nuo, you sassy king, never change. 👑
There were so many moments I highlighted, but these quotes live rent-free in my head:
🖤 “If you think I am a weak woman, then test me, and I will show you how weak my magic is.” 🖤 “I looked up through my lashes at them, showing them the woman I was becoming—the one who was brave, strong and full of power. I am not someone you wish to upset. I will not be controlled.” 🖤 “Your flaws fit snugly next to mine.” (SWOON.)
When I got to 90% of the book, I literally wanted to stop reading because I could feel that perfect cozy bubble starting to shake… and then it didn’t just pop—it exploded. My heart is still recovering.
Brilliant pacing, raw emotions, badass characters, and found family vibes that hit in all the best ways. Sarah L. Rose, I am obsessed. Bring on the next book—I need answers, comfort, and probably therapy.
Id like to say that Nuo and Maeve carried this book. I have been a Nuo ride or die - and the ending????? not very happy girl… I found Liv to be very doubtful of herself - which went against the strong woman she constantly set out herself to be. Her insecurities arising made some of the dialogue a little (lack of better word) annoying at times. I found her self-discovery of who she was in book one much more relatable - then again she is literally possessed by evil magic here so maybe im being harsh. That being said, I really enjoyed when the blue twins put her in her place. The theme of forgiveness is so well done however. I got mad at Liv for being impatient with Nuo - and my heart ached heavily for him. I feel he is so misunderstood and alone. Despite his rudeness/sassiness, I always recalled the kindness he showed in book one. Ouch. Very happy reading in both their perspectives and look forward to more Nuo. Sometimes i found him and Liv had more chemistry than Brekt (sorry). The desert eagle + Kazhi was unexpected !!! loved that part. I guess the reason i gave it four stars was just because i got lost much more easily in this book. I felt in Guardians of the Aspis we were learning with Liv, whereas here we are investigating the truth with her. I got confused in gods, who can and cant have magic, the theories of the light, and also when Brekt was actually himself or the Aspis. That can totally be on my part, but I think itd be super awesome to have some sort of chart at the start with the gods and legacies, prominent characters and their legacies and whatnot! I am still excited for book three! i love this world and i love Nuo, im hoping we get more on Kazhi!!!

Alexa, play “Anxiety” by Doechii because my entire nervous system is in shambles.
I don’t know why I waited until the absolute last minute to dive into this ARC, but honestly? No regrets. Not a single one. I inhaled all 733 pages like I was on a mission from the gods themselves, and somehow my brain didn’t liquefy completely, though it definitely tried.
This book was A LOT. Imagine someone opening a portal directly into your face and unleashing a tidal wave of lore you didn’t know you desperately needed. The revelations about the history of the Aspis and the Ikhor not being 100% accurate was a shock. We all know that history is written by the winning side. 😉
My heart is in tatters for Liv and Brekt. These two cannot catch a break if it was gift wrapped, hand delivered, and labeled “for emergency use only.” Brekt was even more intense this time around, radiating the kind of emotional devastation that makes you want to simultaneously hug him and scream into a pillow. I loved having Liv’s and Nuo’s POVs, but I will be stubbornly bitter forever that we didn’t get Brekt’s. I need access to his unfiltered thoughts for reasons that are none of your business.
The addition of Maev and Ollo, my delightful little nerds, was everything I never knew I needed. And the banter in this book? Unmatched. Peak entertainment. The kind that makes you cackle like an unhinged goblin at 3 a.m.
And that last 10 percent? What in the name of gods was that? I was not ready, I was not okay, and yet I more.
Bring on book three. My fragile little heart will be here waiting, probably screaming.
The first book has 150 issues that need correcting, and this second book has 118– so there’s improvement! The author needs to learn sprang vs sprung, to watch for possessives needing apostrophes, to check for random missing letter typos, and identify who vs whom mistakes. These errors distract from enjoyment of and immersion in the story.
The first part of the book is somewhat rough and needs more polishing, especially the initial dialog scenes. However, once the full cast of characters are back together, the plot really takes off and is a thrill ride.
There is a theme of forgiveness and unconditional loyalty that builds in intensity. The dialog toward the end of this book is really well done. I most appreciate the author’s ability to twist the plot in surprising ways. There is also much to like about the characters’ relationships having depth and nuance.
(Vague) Spoiler alert!! Negative issues that may trigger readers:
This book is darker in that some characters are badly wounded (killed?); they struggle with feelings of betrayal, fear, and secrets; and they have supernatural elements complicating everything. It ends on a cliff-hanger, so readers who hate waiting for the next book to be published will be frustrated. I was put off by the sex scene as it was TMI, used profanity, and was borderline “ew” as it just skirted the idea of being too rough/abusive/mixed-creature/supernatural. The series deals with possession by supernatural forces.
Okay I’m still working on my full review on my laptop but here’s a little one first. I was kindly and shockingly chosen for a second time to be an ARC reader for Sarah.
Obviously the first book is more limited in the world view Liv has. So I love learning more about the world and discovering it with her. I’m not fully sure how the “tech” and more modern terms and linguistic phraseology felt to me. At times it made sense and others I felt had a sense of wrongness in the rest of the setting of the world even though it was magic and crystals that powered it. For me personally it was a little jarring. But that’s just me and how I like modern and archaic worlds to be more separate.
I experienced so much devastation and heart break but in the best possible way. I made many notes in blue while reading this. I’m still not over the heartbreak in the beginning of the book and the break down in the what i think is one of Liv’s most important and pure relationships.
I found the diary entries to be a really interesting device to show the changes and developments in Liv and to learn more about her both in the book and before it.
This book felt so different to the first. Darker at times which is obvious given the turn in events from the first book.
I still need to fully form and process my thoughts. I made some good predictions at times but I had lots of OMG and holy hell moments where my predictions were very much wrong and I loved it.
The books picks up a moment before Where the Guardians of Aspis left us. My goodness do things appear rough for Liv in the beginning.
There is a lot of growth to be had by the characters, some of them are trying others are floundering and emotions run high for everyone.
Liv and her chosen decide to take matters into their own hands just because it was prophesied does mean you can go about it in your terms and make it work for you as the chosen to end all.
Ahh that last part was action and heaven all rolled into one. And the cliff hanger, I wanna know what Liv knows, tell me!!!! But alas I must wait for book 3. But oh man, so much happens in book 2, and the flow is superb and you will want to yell at Liv and Nuo and a few other characters at some point throughout the book.
This book had be salivating and hyperventilating at different points throughout the book. Def top 5 for making me feel like I’m on roller coaster of emotions.
Key points no particular order: – multi POV – elemental powers – dragon – warring factions – fated enemies – longing – found family – spicy towards the end 🌶️🌶️🌶️ – bl00d play – pleasure & p@in –
As a sequel to the first book, The Guardians of the Aspis, this was one of my most anticipated reads for this year and let me tell you, it didn’t disappointed. The book retakes the story from the end of book one, and in a slower pace bring us in the journey of Liv, trying to understand the power of the Ikhor, Grieving Brekt, losing Nuo’s friendship and getting to know the evil. I lived with her every dream, every hope that he isn’t dead (iykyk). Having a different POV (Nuo’s) was so refreshing and masterful. The author is so versatile and nuanced, able to slip notes of humor even in the midst of the darkest moments. Her writing feels like a breath of fresh air. The complexity of the characters, development of new ones, expanding the margins of the world, the action sequences are masterfully executed and beyond any book. I can’t recommend it enough. Sarah, you will always have a special place in my heart, you’ve done an outstanding work! I can’t wait to see what you have to say in book #3!

An absolutely fantastic, epic fantasy that had me absolutely devouring it and now desperate for more.
The Rise of the Ikhor continues where The Guardians of the Aspis leaves off, and you are thrown back straight into the magical adventure of legends, betrayals and so much more. We follow Liv on her journey as she discovers not everything is how she once believed and that the reality is a lot more complicated. Dealing with heartbreak and betrayals, we see a whole new side to our FMC as she develops throughout the book.
There were so many twists and turns and moments that had my heart in a choke hold. I have shed tears, laughter and had those heart warming ohmygosh moments. This book really has it all.
My one issue? It's left me not just wanting, but NEEDING more. How dare it be left like that! Sarah has me craving book three desperately because I cannot get enough of this story and these amazing characters. I've completely fallen in love with these books.
Whew — I didn’t love this book as much as I was hoping to! I think I understand the direction the story was trying to go, but the journey there felt a bit rough. I had a hard time keeping track of the dream sequences versus reality, and the whole “is it Brekt or not Brekt” situation got confusing.
That said, I really enjoyed the scenes where Liv interacted with the gods — those moments were vivid, fun, and easy to imagine. They brought a nice burst of energy to the story.
I didn’t connect with Liv and Brekt’s relationship this time around. It felt like Liv was constantly torn — running from him but also yearning for him — and then suddenly, they were just… together. Maybe that pacing and emotional distance was intentional, but it didn’t hit the same way their connection did in the first book.
Also, I missed the banter with Nuo! I’m sure its absence was deliberate for the tone of this book, but I really hope we get more of it in the next book.
I was super excited to be chosen as an ARC reader for this book. The first book in the series was my #1 read from 2024 and I think book two will take first place for 2025.
Liv is easily one of my favorite FMCs and I adore her resilience and how she thinks/makes her decisions. Following the cliffhanger of book 1, I had no idea how the story was going to go. I was worried about the romance storyline, the chosen family, and just survival in general! I will say I was happy with the additional characters, though I was wary at first.
Book one is new world, new experiences. Book two is adjusting to new powers and the darker side of this new world. I enjoyed the growth and depth of the story and the characters. I am so excited for book 3 and to follow the story further.
It is difficult to write a non-spoilery review and not give anything away!
I cannot say enough good things about this author or these books. This book has everything you could possible want and more.
I will try to leave this as spoiler free as possible… I don’t want to take any magic away from this book by leaving Easter eggs.
Sarah has created such a beautiful fantasy world that is so easy to picture and absolutely stunning. I want to live in her novels!! I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.
The characters have my heart and they live in my head rent free. They are some of the best written characters I have read. Nuo is my absolute favourite and I need to know where his story takes him!! Liv is a powerhouse and so relatable. She is very real. And has emotions that everyone experiences. I want to be her friend.
I cannot wait for book three. I need it yesterday!!
This book is incredible! I loved the first book, Guardians of the Aspis, which you will definitely want to and need to read first to understand the second book in the series. This fast paced story unfolds in such a way that you will most likely struggle to stop reading. The characters are relatable, despite this world being one with magic, and legends that are unfamiliar to our everyday lives. You will find yourself wondering who can be trusted, what the truth is and also fighting for characters that quickly capture your heart. As well as wanting certain characters to get what’s coming to them! Add this to your TBR today!
As someone who has read countless fantasy romance novels, I can confidently say this series stands out as one of my all-time favorites. It tells the gripping story of two lovers-turned-enemies, and the loyal friends caught in the crossfire as they struggle to survive in a deeply corrupt society.
This series delivers everything: heartfelt romance, sharp humor, gut-wrenching turmoil, and a plot that keeps you constantly on edge. The emotional depth and slow-burn tension make it nearly impossible to put down.
The characters are richly developed, and the story unfolds with twists that keep you guessing until the very end. If you enjoy fantasy romance that balances love, loyalty, and suspense with expert storytelling, this series is absolutely worth your time. I highly recommend it.
Ahh! I loved how thick and chunky this bad boy was, however I have finished which means now I have to wait for the next 😭 Rise was a great second installment to this series, it had everything we needed after we were left craving more after book one!
We followed everyone as they worked their way through the stages of grief, trying to find their place in a world that had completely changed from what they'd originally planned out. It flowed well and took us all along for the ride.
I loved the pining and teasing, the slow burn was so well done but I'm glad there was payoff in the end 😏 The world building is wonderful, I'm still spinning and I can't wait to see what happens next 😍

*The Rise of the Ikhor* is an emotionally charged, action-packed sequel that exceeds expectations!
Picking up right where *The Guardians of the Aspis* left off, it dives deeper into a richly built world filled with elemental magic, fated enemies, and complex relationships. It addresses grief and introduces new characters.
The romance is intense, the stakes are high, and the character development—especially Liv’s—is both realistic and powerful. With multiple POVs, morally grey choices, and a roller coaster of emotions, this book is layered, immersive, and unforgettable.
A must-read for fans of fantasy with depth, heart, and spice!
Every millennia the Ikhor rises with the magic stolen from the gods and the Apsis rises to fight it until only one of them remains. The Ikhor has risen and it changes everything.
While it starts off heavy, as time passes and the characters begin to open themselves to new perspectives, it gets so good. New information and little details are being dropped left, right, and centre but we don't yet know how it all comes together. And I could not stop laughing when the crystals started getting a workout. And the ending? I have so many questions and so many concerns for what they're all going to go through in book three because my goodness is there a lot up in the air right now.
Sarah’s done it again, what a journey that was 😩. I was fortunate enough to be an ARC reader again for this series and I’m so happy because that was amazing.
The tension between Liv and Brekt was INFURIATING but delicious. The trials and tribulations of Nuo and Livs friendship will forever keep me guessing.
I really didn’t know where the story was going to go after finishing the first book and I’m happy to report that it’s GOING like, no spoilers but trust. Stuff is happening and it’s going to keep you on your toes is all I can say.
A thrilling continuation! Sarah L. Rose delivers again with the second book in the Guardians of the Aspis series. This installment dives even deeper into the mythology, secrets, and high-stakes challenges that make this world so addictive. The character growth is phenomenal, and the pacing had me flipping pages late into the night.
There’s something so fresh about how Sarah weaves emotion into every twist—and just when you think you’ve figured it out, she hits you with another surprise. If you loved book one, this one will not disappoint.
Finished this book in less than 2 days. It completely consumed me and left me just speechless wanting more. I really went through all the emotions and had me on the edge of my seat. The character development and world building even from the first book to the second was a wonderful thing to see play out and written beautifully. I can’t wait for book 3 to come out and see how the story continues to unfold, just like book one this has left me either so many questions and still thinking about it days later.
Well, well, well. Looks like I'm getting the consequences of my own actions. Those actions being not savouring this book and making it last!
I'm absolutely hooked on this series and adore these characters. This is a great series for any hopeless romantic with a love for fantasy. This book is for you if you want an exciting read. This book is not for you if you don't like tropes and the occasional emotional theatrics - thankfully, I'm a big fan of both.
Sarah, I hope you're not going to leave me hanging too long!
Wow, what a read! The emotions, the mystery, the world building, the character growth. I couldn't put it down. I'm so glad I was selected for an ARC.
In an attempt to not spoil anything, Liv really comes into her own. The new characters that are introduced are great additions and really add to the story line. There are still so many unanswered questions.
Picking up right where The Guardians of the Aspis ended, Rise of the Ikhor is packed full of new characters and adventure. While the writing was on par with book one I felt this was more about getting to know the characters better and setting the scene for the next books that follow in the series.
Kazhi was a delightful surprise, I found it very interesting to get more depth to her character - I'm left wanting more. I'm glad Bas got to redeem himself in this book and he parted ways with the she devil Falizha. Nuo's POV was a great introduction and way to keep in check with both the Ikhor/Liv/Aethers and Aspis/Brekt/Guardians.
Maev and Ollo were the perfect addition to Livs journey. I wasn't sure how it was going to pan out since The Guardians were such a fun group to follow but I was not disappointed! The Desert Eagle's scenes were action packed and extremely enjoyable to read. I felt it was the perfect balance between all the heartbreak and love scenes.
I'm very keen and can't wait to get my hands on book three. There are a lot of unknowns regarding the welfare of some loveable characters as well as so much going on with the gods, council, Aspis/Ikhor and Guardians. The whole series is bound to be a hit.
RITI is a great book two! It definitely started with a little too much “him”, and it became repetitive at times, I understand why it was there, but felt there could’ve been other ways to show the hurt and yearning. I really enjoyed the story and growth of Liv & the Aspis and learning . We learned a lot and also have even more unanswered questions but I am excited to see where the family goes next.
I was an ARC reader and this is my honest review. I loved the first book, Guardians of the Aspis, so much that I read it multiple times. I don't normally do that. I loved the second book even more and plan to read it a few more times until the next one comes out. This book is fantastic! I loved every minute of every page. Liv really discovers herself and learns about her found family. It was exciting to go beyond the border into Aether land. Can't wait for book three!
