Though she resisted growing up for as long as possible she did what southern girls are taught to do and stayed on the path: She finished college, married her sweetheart, worked her full time job, and had a kid… and quietly went stir crazy.
Now a little older and wiser, like most of her heroines, she sees the merit of straying from the path, and if there is a sexy werewolf in the bushes-well that’s a legitimate excuse to be late to dinner.

This book? A wish granted… and then some.
From the first monster fight to the last heart-melting growl, Wishing Upon a Monster pulled me into a world where magic is wild, monsters are sacred, and ancient gods don’t just wake for anyone—they wake for her. And I am obsessed.
Aurora is fierce, flawed, and utterly relatable—magicless in a world full of power, yet more capable than anyone gives her credit for. And when she makes a desperate wish mid-battle? She doesn’t just get saved—she gets claimed. Cue Olan, the eight-foot-tall Brøndmand god with a voice like velvet thunder and a possessive streak that could tear open the Void itself.
And let’s just say… he’s not subtle about what he wants. 😮💨
But beyond the spice (which delivers), it’s the lore that really steals your breath. Mikayla Rand’s world-building is sensual, shadowy, and full of depth. The gods, the Void, the preserve, the ancient magic—they feel vast and mythic, but never overwhelming. It’s sexy lore. Like… I want to roll around in it sexy. The glossary? A gift. The story? An offering.

Fast-paced, sensual, and addictive, the writing style was so easy to read, and I found myself drawn in by page 3! World building was detailed and full of depth - with no mind-numbing info dumps. The lore really did it for me, though.
I particularly like the magic side of a story when it's written in with great detail and care, and this truly was. Oh, and then there's the spice - it was hot, steamy, and full of yearning and all-around well written! The mmc Olan is sexy and romantic and so swoon worthy! Because Olan doesn’t just want to claim her body—he wants her heart, mind, body, soul, her protection, her future, and he will get territorial and steak his claim if threatened!
🧝♂️ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤:
I really enjoyed the number of side characters and the large parts they played within the story. I also appreciated how there were soooo many different supernatural creatures in one book! And on the good side of the fight too!
Out of the side characters, I liked her dad and vicky the ghost, and Nash defo needs his own story!
It was great to see such strong characters be emotional, vulnerable, and strong too. And let's not forget our sexy monster shadow daddy!

Because I wanted more! I wanted more on where she worked, some history on its past cases, or how it developed maybe. I wanted to know more about what resided in the forest and more about how she became friends with everyone and their stories. Oh, and her life while growing up was briefly covered, but I want to know more of that too!

I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.

Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.

I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another authors hands

It was OK. I wish i didn't start this one as It didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.

I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetative writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.

I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people, but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.

Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.

This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable. Even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!

Rorie and Olan have a very unusual meeting and subsequent relationship. Being very different beings, it can only be destiny. I thoroughly enjoyed their story.

This was such a great book!
I loved every minute, and there was a great mix of action, spice, and even some amazing cozy moments too.
Olan is the biggest cinnamon roll ever, and he is so cute. I love how he goes out of his way to respect Rorie's autonomy and does his best to learn and grow to be the best partner possible for her. I adore how he goes to her friends for advice.
Rorie is tough, smart, and there is an undertone of classism that she is constantly fighting against because she has no magic. She works her butt off to to prove she isn't worthless, and she deserves every single minute of peace Olan gives her.
The worldbuilding was fantastic, and I can't wait to read more books in the series to see where this goes. The side characters are so dang good and I'm keeping my fingers crossed we get stories about them because they deserve love too.
Overall this was a great quick read, and it was impossible to put down.

Wishing Upon A Monster is part of Mikayla Rand’s Monster Brides universe. It’s also my first read by her. I enjoyed how fierce Aurora is and how loyal and protectove Olan is. The book starts with a battle that has Aurora making a wish and finding herself married to Olan. The steamy scenes are hot and I liked watching their relationship develop. I enjoyed reading Wishing Upon a Monster and look forward to reading more.

The story was very different and interesting. I liked the characters and felt like there could have been more depth to them but they seemed to follow together decently and created a good storyline.

This is my first read of this author and I am hooked.
From the first second there is a fast paced good read.
The trigger warning had me worried but I was not triggered at all.
I look foward to exploring this world and new to this world or returning, this book is a stand alone great read. I highly recomend.

Wishing Upon A Monster is part of the Monster Brides Romance Series.
Aurora makes an offhanded wish, not realizing it would be granted. However, the payment is gold, which she does not have enough of, so Olan takes Aurora as payment for the wish being granted. There is a lot of spice in this story.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I loved it! Clear world building, characters I could relate to and a plot that pulled me in, right from the get-go, had me fully engaged. Rorie and Olan may have met through unusual circumstances but it sure felt like fate ;) With hot romance, action, a bit of drama and lots of emotions, this was a page turner for me. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book :D
