A thoughtful historical review of the rivers and water systems of the American South, from earliest discoverable history (the piles of shells in the midden of Mississippian cultures showing where they settled and for how long) through colonization, more recent history, and finishing off in this decade's notable hurricanes and their impacts on the region. I appreciated the attention given to context, including the results of levee systems being left in disrepair during the Civil War, and the decisions on who should pay for river engineering and protection systems. The public health discussions of the regions where malaria and yellow fever held sway, and the later discussion of polluted groundwater were also well worth reading. Each one of these chapters could easily have been its own book... if I have any complaints here, it's that I could have explored any of these topics happily in greater detail. A relevant read for today's political and, well, planetary climate.
