Once Upon a RomCom #3

Lily of the Tower

Rate this book
I’ve been a prisoner for five hundred and fifty days.

Okay, technically I’m just stuck in my aunt’s four-story tower. And yes, Aunt Agatha is more "eccentric book club queen" than evil captor. But still—no piano, no freedom, and no escape from my own mistakes.

Like almost marrying a guy who pretended to love me just to get back at my brother.

So when Ryder Hawthorne—my brother’s best friend and absurdly hot Hollywood stuntman—shows up climbing my actual tower, I assume I’m hallucinating. He says he’s here to check on me. I think he’s here to test my willpower.

I swore I’d never fall for smooth talk and a killer smile again. But Ryder’s visits become the highlight of my day… and the flutter in my chest says I might be in more danger than ever.

After everything I’ve lost, is it foolish to hope for something real?

“I fold my arms over my chest, determined to be unaffected by his flirtatious eyes and muscles. Not that his muscles are intentionally flirtatious. They can’t help themselves.”

Lily of the Tower is the third book in Marie Soleil’s
Once Upon a RomCom series and it’s a fun retelling of Rapunzel!

Lily’s father and brothers have been keeping her locked away for her own safety after a scandal with famous actor, Tristan Jackson. She is currently residing in the tower of her aunt Agatha‘s house where she does whatever she can to stay busy and has no contact with the outside world. That is until Ryder, a stuntman, scales, her tower wall at the insistent of his nephews and discovers Lily inside! From there, these two form, a friendship which leads to Lily getting to spend some time outside of her tower and write her teaching her that she is a strong, smart, capable, young woman!

Aww! Ryder and Lily were so cute! It was fun to watch their friendship progress throughout the story! I loved how Ryder helped a Lily be brave and strong and realize her potential. He was also so sweet and protective of her and I was so happy that thanks to him, she got to play the piano and see some of Brookhaven after being cooped up for so long! Lily was ambitious and beyond talented at playing the piano! I loved her passion and her ability to stay busy and better herself while being kept away from society!

Favorite quotes:

“This is the first hug I’ve gotten from anyone else, let alone a handsome man who stirs up all those fluttery feelings I’ve kept dormant for a year and a half.”

“This isn’t the quick hug of a family member saying hello or goodbye. This is comfort. This is safety. This is compassion, and I didn’t realize how much I craved all those things until I had it wrapped around my shoulders and waist.”

“I chuckle to myself as I head to the balcony, wondering what’s going on in her mind, and half-hoping she’s feeling the same thing I am. Because there’s nothing I want to do more than come back and spend time with her.”

“Have you had fresh sourdough before?” I shake my head, and she clicks her tongue. “I might be living in a tower, but you’re living under a rock,” she says.”

4.5⭐️ ARC Review: My first Rapunzel retelling, and I’m glad it was this one. By far my favorite in this series! Rapunzel is one of my favorite fairytales, Tangled specifically, but the original tale as well. And that’s what Marie based this book more on.

Ryder and Lily were such great characters. I loved their dynamic and their situation. The friendship bracelets?? Yes. Just yes. I loved their talks, their growth, their similarities, their differences, the shared issues with anxiety. Oh it was all just so good. The things Ryder did for her just because he wanted her to be happy. Now he is an MMC I can get behind. Her brothers on the other hand. I’ll talk about them two paragraphs down. Back to Ryder and Lily. I am just so in love with them. They were so good together. Marie wrote them so well.

I didn’t know how I was going to feel about Aunt Agatha, but she was an incredible character. Loved her to pieces.

I was really annoyed and frustrated with Lily’s brothers. They low key sucked in this one. Which was sad because I read their books and they were great. They had no right in doing what they did. They masked it as being protective brothers but it was low-key icky. The fiancés were also icky. Sitting idly while watching the boys lock up their sister. Lily forgave them too easily too. That was my biggest issue by far. But Marie tried to stay true to the tale in her own way so I get it.

Do I sense a Peter Pan retelling? The Darlings? What? I love figuring out what the next story will be. She has slipped that into all 3 books and I’m here for it. So excited to see where this last book goes!

Review
Have you imagined yourself being locked in the tower and a charming stunt man come and save you? This is Lily’s story.

This story is just so bittersweet at the same time and a forbidden love like Romeo and Juliet. Love Ryder and Lily so much. They are just so sweet together.

Love that he sneak in and spend time with her. She taught him how to listen to classical music while he taught her self-defence. They both showed their vulnerable sides to each other and also opened up to each other. He also helps her through her panic attacks.

Her overprotective brothers are annoying at times but it is because they love her but still it is too much. And also love her Aunt Agatha who always wants her to be . And as you read you can see Lily’s character grow.

There is some action in the story too. Can’t spoil too much you will have to read to find out. This book made me smile, laugh, cry, swoon and also want to be part of the Bookclub hahaha…

P/S Would like to have Galileo to help with my panic attacks and also would love to see Aunt Agatha to have her happily ever after too.

I was gifted complimentary ARC. All opinions are my own Thanks to @authormariesoleil for the ARC.

Marie Soleil does it again with another perfect Disney retelling, this time of Rapunzel.

We were introduced to Lily in the previous books (which I recommend if you haven’t read those) so it was helpful knowing her backstory going into this. Lily is hiding out after the fallout of an incident with a famous Hollywood actor, so she’s staying in a tower owned by her aunt. We then meet Ryder, who happens to be best friends with one of Lily’s brothers, Peter, who’s a stuntman. When Ryder scales the tower to slay the troll (according to the game played by children), he stumbles, not upon a troll, but upon Lily.

They’re immediately entranced by each other but try to keep it to themselves for their own reasons, but Ryder starts sneaking up to her castle nightly to hang out with her and avoid anyone knowing he knows she’s there.

When Lily is finally able to leave her tower, she’s been isolated for so long and struggles with anxiety about reentering the real world. Ryder has dealt with his share of anxiety and panic attacks and recognizes this and helps her through it. Her brothers have always been so over protective they haven’t given her the chance to learn to protect and believe in herself, but Ryder is the one that does that for her.

It was so fun to return to Brookhaven and see so many cameos by characters we’ve met in previous books. Ryder and Lily have such a sweet relationship, and despite some bumps in the road I love how they finally come together. And as always, Soleil really brings the focus back to the FMC learning to believe in herself. We’ve also been nicely set up for the next book about Peter and Wendy and I can’t wait to see this all come full circle.

Thank you Marie Soleil for this e-copy

Reading this third book in the Once Upon a RomCom series feels like returning home. With heartfelt characters, a cozy town, and swoonworthy romance, Lily of the Tower adds a different, more serious layer in contrast with previous books. We all know the story, but intermingled with other classic fairytales, Soleil willfully leaves some easter eggs throughout her story.

Lilly is the youngest Stone sibling, and as the only lady, she grew up with four overprotective elderly brothers. Her character growth was messy and truly explorational, leading to a new sense of self-confidence and respect. Her self-doubt and anxiety felt raw and real, making you feel sympathetic to her. You can't resist her bright aura and positive vibes, especially Ryder.
Ryder is so caring and loyal, despite his tough exterior. I love how he stands up for Lilly and sees her inner strength. Their moments together were adorable, as they were living in their own bubble. It also kind of felt like a Romeo and Juliet trope, but fortunately, with a happy ending.

I loved seeing past characters/couples back in the story, and Aunt Agatha added interesting plots and twists, acting as Lily and Ryder's matchmaker. There was another twist, which was kind of predictable, but subtle. Lily's passion for the piano was remarkable, and I love it when an author adds personal musical pieces to each character. Marie Soleil really put thought into the whole process, taking the reader on a romantic, emotional ride.

Near the end, we get glimpses of Peter and Gwen's story, which I'm very much looking forward to!

With each book on the Once Upon a RomCom series, I find myself thinking it cannot possibly get any better than the last. And yet, here we are. Again. From the mentions of Lily's situation previously, I was definitely looking forward to this one and had high expectations. Not only did it not disappoint, but it completely blew my expectations out of the water. Seriously, I could not put this one down. I loved Lily and Ryder right from the start... their chemistry, the way that he truly SAW her and believed in her, the tenderness... it was all just so good, and I didn't want their story to end. Aunt Agatha added some much-needed humor to the story... I couldn't help but love her as well. Like the previous books, I love that we get the elements that we love from the original fairy tale, but in a way that truly feels like a unique story all on its own too. While the author's note reminds us that this is a Rapunzel retelling, NOT a Tangled one, I did actually really love the small nods to that version of the story as well. If you love a good fairy tale retelling, this book (and series as a whole) is a must read. I loved it!

Lily of the Tower is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language. It is the third book in the Once Upon a RomCom series. While you may be able to enjoy this as a standalone, I do think those who have read the previous books will have a better understanding of Lily's history and family dynamics and, as such, will get the most out of the story.

I am absolutely loving this Once Upon a Romcom series by Marie Soleil. She has taken all these beloved fairy-tales (think Disney classics) and turned them into relatable and heartfelt romcoms that I am here for. Lily of the Tower did not let me down and already, I'm so excited for the next book, Wendi and Peter.

First, can I just say this is the Rapunzel retelling I didn't even know I needed, but I sure wanted. I love how the author focused more on the original tale, but still included these little gems and nods to Tangled, which is high on my lists of favorites for sure so I also ate those Easter Eggs up.

Lily and Ryder were adorable. From the moment Ryder literally climbs Lily's actual tower to him showing up for her at a moment that will make readers swoon, I was so invested in their friendship and romance. I loved the dual POV, the growth they both experienced, the way Ryder truly cared for Lily and believed in her. It basically solidified Ryder as the kind of hero I too would like to fall for and have fall for me; he was seriously so sweet.

Another aspect I thought was creative was Lily’s love and talent in playing classic piano. I thought it set her character apart and made it even more memorable.

I don’t want to spoil anything so I will simply say that I loved reading this one, it was a great happy escape even though the characters had some hard things to pass through, and I really enjoyed reading it. I recommend this book.

I loved this story! It was lots of fun but it also brought out some other emotions. I love it when stories make me FEEL. And all the emotions were heightened by the music that went along with each chapter.
I'm picky about what music I listen to, especially while reading, but this playlist was exceptional! Being classical music, it's all instrumental (there might've been one that had words), so it's less distracting from the story. Each piece went with its chapter very well. One had me laughing because it was just the kind of music I would think of during a goofy "hide in the closet" scene. Another piece had me in tears because it was so melancholy while Lily was going through a difficult time. And the piece at the end was so beautiful!
Anyway, back to the story itself. I loved watching Lily learn how to stand up to her overprotective big brothers. I appreciated that she didn't just shut them out of her life, but that she confronted them in love and gave them some healthy boundaries.
Ryder was such a gentleman. I loved how he cared for Lily by teaching her how to defend herself, by fulfilling one of her deepest desires, and overall just by being there for her. He was so sweet and patient.
I enjoyed seeing how the author took the tale of Rapunzel (not Tangled, though there are a couple hints to the movie) and made it her own. It ended up being a delightful story, as is always the case when Marie Soleil writes something. :)

Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

ARC Review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Lily of the Tower is part of the Once Upon a Rom Com series by Marie Soleil. I've read all the other books in the series, but they can all stand alone, in my opinion, though they do connect.

Lily has had a celebrity relationship end in a very Georgiana Darcy type of way, and her over protective older brothers have hidden her from the public eye until things cool down.

Isolation will do a number on anyone (as we all learned six years ago), and Lily's mental health is getting worse and worse, until someone dares to climb the tower to find a lonely young woman... and saves her from her seclusion.

This is such a sweet story. I absolutely loved the playlist that came with it and listened to each song that corresponds to the chapter. What a cool idea, and it definitely immerses you even more into Lily's world of classical music.

The romance was so sweet, budding from a "best friend's little sister" into best friends and on from there. I loved how Ryder was so protective of Lily too but in a way that empowered her instead of stifling her.

Five mega stars for Lily of the Tower. I will read anything Marie Soleil writes. She has such a sweet way of writing loveable characters.

I received a free e-copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

This modern adaption of ‘Rapunzel’ is nothing like you have ever read before, but if you haven’t read the previous books in this series, please do read them first as this storyline picks up immediately where the epilogues leave off.

Lily Stone is 19 years old and has grand ambitions but is being held back from them literally and figuratively.  In the last year and a half, her world has been flipped upside down and now she’s forced to deal with the fallout of one colossal mistake.  Her one source of joy has been stripped from her and now she must forge a new way.  What she didn’t account for was that her tower would peak more than just children’s curiosity.

Ryder is 25 and back home in Brookhaven awaiting his next job opportunity.  Hanging out with this his cousin, Gwen, and the boys she nannies for is fun, but the looming tower at Agatha Stone’s house catches a lot of attention from a whole slew of children.  Why not save the good people of Brookhaven from the horrible troll that must inhabit it?!  At the top of the tower, there was no troll, but a girl.  After having a conversation with her, Ryder knew he wanted to go back and after some revelations Gwen shared… He HAD to go back!

The interactions between these two is magnetic!  While the attraction is there from the beginning, the chemistry that goes beyond the physical is out of this world!  There is so much more to them than that!  I admire the courage and strength that they both endured throughout the journey that was seen on page and events mentioned that occurred prior to book start.  While this story was adaption, I loved the original Marie Soleil material as well as the nods to what we have seen in recent films and classic fairytale!  Hold on to your hats because the Easter eggs as to previous stories and what’s to come in the next book are sprinkled throughout and fun to find!  Loved this!  Already pre-ordered my paperback!

Lily of the Tower is a modern Rapunzel-style "sweet" rom-com with family chaos, drama, and lots of charm! Lily gave her heart away too quickly as a teenager and is suffering the consequences. The way the author conceived of a reason for her to be "locked away" ala Rapunzel worked well, in my opinion!

I loved that the author also created a piano play list for the reader to listen to, as playing piano is a huge part of Lily’s personality. That was unique!

There’s also a lot of setup for future books, especially with Peter’s travel app and Ryder’s cousin Gwen, which was fun if you like interconnected series.

While I generally loved the book, I was disappointed by one implication around skin tone. When describing a person in town, it reads "He looks scary, with his tall stature, dark skin, and huge muscles, but he's one of the kindest people I've ever met." I get what the author is trying to say, but implying that dark skin is scary perpetuates that stereotype. You can describe someone as physically tough or intimidating without involving skin color.

Where the book shines most is the emotional growth. Lily working through panic attacks, Ryder encouraging therapy, and the contrast between healthy support and her family steamrolling her choices added real depth.

If you enjoy fairy tale retellings in a modern setting, definitely add this to your tbr!

Thank you so much to the author for the advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is such a sweet and adorable story with so much depth. I loved Lily and Ryder’s story. Lily is so sweet and sensitive with a natural ability to play the piano, and she also lacks confidence in her ability to make good choices. Ryder, her brother’s best friend, finds her hiding place and the secret friendship begins. I loved how kind and tender he was with her but also helped her to become stronger and believe in herself. I loved the humor that Aunt Agatha brought to the story. I loved the author’s ability to bring so much feeling in describing Lily playing the piano. This story drew me in and had me rooting for Lily and Ryder to find their HEA. There were some surprises I didn’t expect that added so much to the story. A humorous quote: “Those are definitely your arms. Your flipping flirtatious muscles.” “My what?”
This story has it all, real feeling and emotion as well as some humor and tender moments, a book you will want to read.

Lily has been tucked away after a scandal happened with actor Tristian. Her family did this in an attempt to keep her safe. The last thing that was expected to happen would be Ryder climbing the tower and changing everything. As Ryder visits, their feelings grow into friendship then more. Ryder helps Lily develop more confidence in herself.

Favorite parts
-Ryder climbing the tower
-Self Defense lessons
-Aunt Agatha for so many reasons
-Ryder helping Lily through her anxiety
-Lily proving to herself that she is strong and capable after all.
-Ryder eavesdropping to get important information so he could be at the right place.
-Lily playing the piano and how it made Ryder feel

Favorite quotes
Ryder is giving me the strength and power I need to take control. And dang it, I’ve fallen for him even more.

“I would go anywhere for you. I would do anything for you. I will be by your side until the end of time, and then beyond that.” I give her a half-grin. “You’re never getting rid of me. I hope you’re okay with that.”

I loved this book! Lily has been hiding away for a time following her reveal of the true character of a Hollywood star, Tristan Jackson. She moves to Brookehaven to stay with her aunt. Meanwhile, Ryder has moved to Brookehaven to stay with his cousin for a bit. Because of a chance encounter, Lily and Ryder meet. They must meet secretly so Lily’s overprotective brothers don’t find out that Lily isn’t staying isolated in her tower. Through their interactions, Lily is empowered to deal with challenges that she has. I enjoyed the character development in this book for both Lily and Ryder. The twists in the book left you wondering how it would all play out. This is a great take on a modern Rapunzel story!

I devoured this book in one sitting! I’ve been looking forward to this Rapunzel inspired story since Lily was introduced, and it did not disappoint!

Thank you Marie Soleil for sending me your ARC Lily of The Tower, book #3 in the Once Upon a RomCom Series.

I really enjoyed books one and two in the series but this one was my favorite so far.

Lily is so sweet but afraid to make her own decisions after a previous, disastrous relationship and her brothers take over and hide her away in a tower. (Think Rapunzel)
Until her hero Ryder shows up. He is a kind, caring stuntman that wants to protect Lily. The ending is so good. 😉

Lots of emotions in this one and so good. I found myself not wanting to put it down.

Make sure you read CinderLuna and Isabelle And The Beast first if you can. They connect the whole Stone family.

Sweet romance! The Stone family saga continues in this third book with little sister, Lily. She got herself into some trouble (it’s helpful to read previous books but the author fills the reader in), and this story is about the repercussions and strategies of dealing with it all. Lily endures loneliness, an overprotective family, self-condemnation, and deception. Ryder to the rescue! Their relationship is empowering and positive and (eventually) tenderly romantic. Though I didn’t enjoy the “third act breakup” the ending is very satisfying. The classical music playlist for the chapters is a special touch that I took advantage of. The music sets the tone for the emotions of the characters and I enjoyed playing it in the background as I read.

As stated in the Author’s Notes at the beginning of the book, this is not a retelling of Disney’s version of Rapunzel. However, I loved seeing some cute tie-ins to the animated movie (the chameleon even makes an appearance). Also noted is the on-page assault and panic attack. Those scenes are very mild and are handled delicately.

I received a complementary copy of this story. A positive review was not required. My rating is 3.5 stars.

Marie did it again with another great book! This time it’s patterned by Rapunzel with Lily and Ryder . Lily made a mistake at a young age and has to stay away from the public in her aunts tower and Ryder climbs the tower and they know each other from Ryder being best friends with her brother . He comes to check on her day after day and they form a friendship and bond and later a relationship .
I love the side characters Lilia’s aunt Agatha and the other’s that make appearances from other books too.
Gwen who is Ryder’s sister I hope she gets her own story .
Thank you Marie for the ARC on this book I loved it 😍

I absolutely adored this book!

While the author left a note at the beginning clarifying that the story is inspired by the traditional telling of Rapunzel, I can confirm that all the Tangled vibes I craved were there from a chameleon keychain to Lily's various hobbies to her wide eyed wonder and passion.

Reading this truly was the Best. Day. Ever.

I loved the choice to make Ryder a stuntman and Lily a pianist. It was a beautiful way for each of them to grow and learn from one another as they fell In love.

If you haven't ordered any books from this series yet, I strongly suggest you get on it!

This is the book many of us have been waiting for, and it's better than anything one could imagine! Wonderful characters (some new some we already know) and an almost magical setting made each chapter an exciting addition to the ongoing story. Being a musician, I was especially surprised by the accuracy of Lily's practice and related discussions. Many authors would not have weighted the practice time, the literature, and the technical comments so thoroughly and correctly.
Romantic, realistic, and refreshingly different from anything I have ever read. Brava Marie Soleil!

This book was a long time coming but it was so worth the wait! After meeting Lily in a previous book I knew she would have a story to tell. She has such a sweet, kind, sensitive soul that I just loved her. I was rooting for her to finally stand up for herself and thankfully she did, with a little encouragement from Ryder. Speaking of, he was the sweetest, most caring person, helping Lily believe in herself. And we can’t forget about his flirtatious muscles. My heart is happy after reading this book. Can’t wait for Gwen and Peter’s book next!

Lily and Ryder are such a blast! This modern-day Rapunzel retelling is creative, sweet, fun and heart-warming. Themes of healing, self-confidence, and found family add great depth while the sweet transition from brother’s best friend, to friends, to more is just delightful. Sneaking in and out of the tower, hilarious Aunt Agatha, the small town of Brookhaven, and Easter eggs to other books are so fun. I was feeling all the feels as the story was coming to an end! Now I cannot wait for the last book in the series.

I’m so in love with this series!

Lily and Ryder are the sweetest. I loved the way their relationship developed. With sweet friendship and cute teasing.

I must admit I did picture Disney’s Tangled characters a bit while reading. 😂

Lily has a heart of gold, she’s a little naive and impulsive. She’s been shut in, told what to do by her brothers and father. Treated like a problem that needs fixing. Forgotten.

Ryder was so thoughtful and protective of Lily. He was the only one to really see what she needed, putting her first in every situation. Hello flower festival. Helping her find confidence. Standing up to her family. DREAM GUY!

There was a beautiful journey for Lily, finding the courage to speak up, stand up for herself, to fight back. No one else thought she was capable, except Ryder.

Some Highlights:
🎹Aunt Agatha
🎹Paper piano

I love the blend of the original fairytales, the author’s unique spin, and personal touches that this series has and I cannot wait for Peter and Wendy!!

Thank you to Marie Soleil for the copy. All opinions are my own.

Wow! This book had depth and emotion! I devoured it in one sitting! I loved the music at the beginning of each chapter that set the mood, the sweet, clean romance, the accurate portrayal of the characters’ feelings and experiences, and the way everything was resolved! As a musician, I really connected to this story. I received an ARC copy and this is my review.

Lily constantly feels insecure and would rather let her brothers control her choices. I love how she didn't just mope around but actually learned fun things. Ryder wants to get his career back on track. I love how he supports Lily when she finally made a decision and is there with her through her panic attacks. ❤️
The ending is so sweet🥹❤️ Another great book by Marie Soleil

Marie has done it again! I just fell in love with Lily in this sweet retelling of Rapunzel. I especially love the classical music aspect of this book. What a beautiful way to be engaged with the characters. Thank you for sharing your love of music and love of writing in one book. Thank you for your commitment to writing clean, wholesome, enjoyable romances!

Fun read

This is definitely a loose Rapunzel retelling, (while there is long hair and a tower, Ryder climbs her tower like a stuntman, no hair involved thankfully). I couldn't help but feel sorry for Lily with her ridiculously protective family.
