This second volume of Basil Gray's studies covers his work on Chinese ceramics and on Islamic art. Appropriately, Chinese ceramics proved the most potent medium in introducing Islamic artists to the motifs of Chinese painting, in view of their wide popularity in the Middle East. The articles on Islamic art were written over a period of forty years. Basil Gray, CB, CBE, FBA (21 July 1904 – 10 June 1989), was an English art historian, Islamicist, author, and the head of the British Museum's Oriental department.

Basil Gray was married to a scholar of art and lettering, Nicolete Binyon, the daughter of Laurence Binyon, the poet, art scholar and dramatist.

They had five children, including the art historian Camilla Gray.
