In Pursuit of the Inconceivable: An Investigation of Metaphysics and Mysticism
In Pursuit of the Inconceivable is a compelling exploration of fundamental questions about existence, reality, and the meaning of life that challenges the traditional scepticism of Western thought. It presents evidence for a systematic, comprehensive, and fundamental world-theory, and places the reader in a position to judge its merits and plausibility for themselves. Peter G. Jones explains the ongoing failure of Western philosophers to comprehend metaphysics as a consequence of not engaging with the only world-theory that survives analysis, the one endorsed by the writers of the Indian Upanishads, the Buddha, Lao Tzu, Meister Eckhart and, many would say, Jesus and Muhammad. The findings of philosophers in the Western analytical ‘rational’ tradition are compared with the teachings of the Perennial tradition and shown to be in complete harmony. In Pursuit of the Inconceivable presents a philosophical explanation of mysticism, an apology for Abrahamic religion, a solution for all metaphysical problems, and an appeal for a significant change of attitude in the academic and scientific communities.

About the author
Peter Guy Jones
1 book5 followersPeter Guy Jones has devoted two decades to the research that informs his first book 'In Pursuit of the Inconceivable'. Over this time he has developed the view that most philosophers approach their chosen subject in an ineffective way, failing to address global and foundational issues before moving on to a study of the endless details and thus becoming entrapped in a complex maze of problems that seem to have no resolution. His mission is to persuade readers that when philosophy is approached in a naïve, open-minded and rigorous manner it may be rendered problem-free and comprehensible, and the world and human nature along with it. In this way he hopes to contribute to the gradual, and he believes inevitable, awakening of the academic and scientific community to the truth of the Perennial philosophy.

I don’t usually read non-fiction but this book was recommended to me by a friend and I highly recommend it. It definitely made me think about things I’d never really considered before. A fascinating, thought-provoking and surprisingly enjoyable read for someone who doesn’t usually read this kind of book.

Big metaphysical questions deserve big comparisons and this book goes there. It explores Western analytic metaphysics alongside mysticism and nonduality with references to the Upanishads, Buddhism, Lao Tzu, and Meister Eckhart. I'd approach it as a scholarly curiosity.
