Written and pieced together by esteemed photographer, director and Saint Vitus colleague, Nathaniel Shannon, is a massive 350-page deep dive, collaged archive, exploring the first decade of Saint Vitus Bar, located in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, NY. With over 100 contributors, The First Ten Years presents interviews, stories, photographs, posters, essays and tons of other never before seen documents from the bars history, including a foreword by Walter Schreifels from Quicksand, and featuring tidbits from Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Jeff Walker of Carcass, Saint Vitus (band), The Descendents, Anthrax, Against Me! Eyehategod, The Dillinger Escape Plan, The Armed, Chuck Klosterman, and many many many more. (Shortly before the release of this book, Saint Vitus Bar was shut down in February, 2024 by the New York City Department of Buildings due to multiple violations and was permanently closed in August, 2024.)
A love letter to one of the most famous underground music venues in NYC. Reading it made me feel very nostalgic for the many nights I spent there, and I am sad it's gone! Since the interviews for this book were conducted before Vitus was unceremoniously shut down, it gives an eerie feeling, like you know the end is coming, but no one wants it to stop! Except for that one guy who made hundreds of complaints daily, I guess. Screw that guy.
