This book contains four of George Durrant's "Treasured Yuletide Classics" -- two of which are already in our family Christmas book collection. "That Thine Alms May Be In Secret" is a personal five star favorite that I shared with Olive, Natalie Christiansen's daughter, when she was about three years old. Olive was so impressed that I plan to give her our beautifully illustrated copy of the book on an appropriately related occasion. "Don't Forget The Star" is Brother Durrant's masterful (five star) story of his own growing up with Christmas including Chapter 5 about his first Christmas away from home, alone as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England when he received personal revelation confirming eternal truth. I plan to share this Chapter 5 next Christmas eve to honor family members who are far away from home -- especially as missionaries. Brother Durrant's effective teaching of personal revelation should bolster everyone. Chapters 6 and 7 are about never outgrowing the true treasures of Christmas. The other two "Yuletide Classics" are fascinating yarns spun by Brother Durrant that could become 5 star experiences shared in just the right way. "Christmas Is For The Believers" will bless everyone with joyously increased compassion for adults who are still childish in their understanding and/or abilities. "The Christmas Marble" is more for youngsters and could be very helpful to mourn with those who mourn.
This is a boring and uninspiring short story Christmas book. Why do all these people write stories about Christmas that are not very good or very inspiring? The first couple of chapters were reflections on the author's life growing up and how he always received Lincoln Logs instead of what he wanted. It really wasn't inspiring.
The next couple of chapters were stories that he wrote about other people. They were ok, but much better than his childhood stories.
Everything is set in American Fork with a strong LDS link.
If you are in the mood for a Christmas novel, don't pick this one.
This little book is comprised of 4 short stories. I really enjoyed the read. Set in small town, rural Utah, they read like true to life stories of a man reminiscing of his childhood when he was a poor, naive young boy. I related to the joy of believing in Santa Claus, the miracles that can happen at Christmas, the lessons learned about the importance of spending time with your loved ones, etc. I'd recommend book to anyone who likes to read holiday stories and believes in the magic of Christmas.
This collection of four stories, mostly featuring characters from a small rural town in Utah, provide a warm comfortable read during the holiday season. George Durrant's success here is in his ability to give life to the magic of the secular side of Christmas while maintaining a reverence for the sacred dimensions of Christmas. Make a note to pick it up in another eleven months.
The reason I give this book five stars is because of one of the stories in it called, "That Thine Alms May Be in Secret". It is one of my absolute favorite Christmas stories and I have been reading it again every year for the past few Christmases. It is a short story that is definitely worth reading. I cry every time!
