The View from the Balcony

Rate this book
Three women and the healing power of friendship, an uplifting story for readers of Rachael Johns and Joanna Nell.

A heartwarming and evocative novel of love, friendship and family, where hope overcomes all - even terrible hospital coffee.

Andie has no memory of the man who pushed her out of the way of a speeding car. A week before Coral's biggest career highlight, her mum has a fall. And the last thing Mara wants is to be assigned to work at the hospital bedside of the much-despised senior partner of her law firm.

Andie, Coral and Mara become the daily visitors to the three patients at the end of East Wing of Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital. The balcony that connects the three rooms provides an oasis, a healing place, but more than that, a place where their lives will interconnect and never be quite the same again...

Praise for The View from the Balcony

Andie woke up in hospital after a terrifying accident, remembering nothing of what happened. Ben - a man she hadn't known before that evening - had been standing beside her at the kerb when a car flew out of control towards them. He pushed her out of the way, getting hit himself and injured badly. Coral was high up in her career, looking forward to ten days in New York, when she was to give a talk. She was trying to fit everything in before flying out of Sydney, and with her pregnant daughter Summer unwell, and her grandson sick, her mother Val becoming forgetful, and then had a fall, there was much to do before leaving. And Mara was tasked with working for the aging partner of the law firm, Estelle, after she'd taken a tumble down the stairs, breaking her leg. Everyone knew she was grumpy; Mara wasn't sure what hit her when she arrived at the hospital.

Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital in Newcastle, became home for the three injured people - Val, Ben and Estelle - and a part time home for their visitors/carers - Coral, Andie and Mara. The balcony which joined the three individual rooms became a haven of sorts, where the view could be enjoyed as well as coffee and conversation. But how would each person cope with what was happening in their lives?

The View from the Balcony is a heartwarming, wonderful story of friendship and hope by Aussie author Janette Paul and I loved it. Family, strength, love and fondness, empathy, grief and change; all came together with delightful, fabulous characters who made the book. Set in and around Newcastle and its beaches, I found the setting easy to follow, as I've been here for over 25 years myself. I've loved all this authors books, and this one was no exception. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Pan Macmillan AU and the author for my ARC to read and review.

This is a beautiful story of friendship and how it can heal and support people, three woman of different ages come together at a rehabilitation hospital, on a balcony with a shared coffee machine, Hepburn House as career’s it is moving and heartwarming and I loved meeting them all.

Coral, has worked hard all of her life and is always there for anyone who needs her especially her family, she works in logistics and is good at organizing, but when she is just about to leave the country for a conference in New York, her elderly mother Val has a fall, will she get to New York with everything that is going on in her life?

Andie, is saved from the path of a speeding car, when se is pushed out of the way and has no memory of that night at all, but Andie searches out the man who saved her and forms a friendship with Ben, will this change her life for the better?

Mara, works for a big law firm and is sent to pick up some things from one of the partner’s homes but when finds the elderly Estelle at the bottom of the stairs and then finds herself assigned as her personal assistant to work with her at the hospital, this is the last thing she wants is to be working with a cranky lady but she is determined to do so.

Coral, Andie and Mara soon find that their lives are changing in so many ways and meeting on the balcony, to have coffee, getting to know each other, feeling the strength from friendship and starting to feel like their shoulders are lifting, is a good thing and a most unexpected thing and the people they are there caring for they too are going through change after the accidents that bought them to Hepburn House, a beautiful moving story, one that I highly recommend, I loved these three woman, and seeing their lives change was heartwarming. Don’t miss this one.

Big thanks to Pan Macmillan for sending us a copy to read and review.
Circumstance lead to bonds that were the basis of true friendship in this story of three women in a scenario that is realistic and heartfelt.
Each have their own backstory and reasons for being visitors in the rehabilitation ward.
A connecting balcony not only offers the patients a place for respite and fresh air but it becomes a refuge for the visitors to step away from the issues and frustrations they endure.
Andie, Coral and Mara form a flourishing connection as they navigate life, personal issues and their daily visit to the ward.
The patients themselves enhanced the plot with their own quirks and situations.
A true joy to witness the organic friendship that developed, the relationships between the visitors and their patients and the snapshot into real issues with family and the workplace.
I absolutely loved having the prickly lawyer Estelle pop up with her blunt but sensible commentary.
A no nonsense character blended with a more timid one worked so well.
A feel good read.

Three patients, three rooms, three visitors and one balcony that will change their lives forever.

I loved the connection between all the characters, the individual relationships and the broader connections between the patients, visitors, staff and even one very wise barista.

Readers are taken along for the ride as Andie, Carol and Mara make their way through what can only be described as an extremely weird two weeks. Each navigate their way through daily visit and many personal issues that at times prove to be quite frustrating and heartbreaking, but also build their strength and character, opening up their worlds to new ideas and endless possibilities.

It's also not only the visitors that we get to spend time with. We also get to spend lots of time with three of the patients of Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital, whose lives have been turned upside down as well. Throughout their stay, their lives move in directions that they weren’t expecting, forming new friendships along the way with each other and some of the staff as well, and the help of one little coffee machine.

Now amongst all these characters and everything that is happening around the rehab and in their personal lives, there is one character that managed to sneak his way into my heart, and that was Alby, a relax and caring barista with great wisdom and heart of gold.

The View from the Balcony reminds us that sometimes we aren’t always our own best advocate, and occasionally we need to step back and remember to take some ‘me time’, believe in ourselves and face our fears.

This book was such a pleasure to read. It made me feel and made me laugh, but most of all it left me with a true satisfaction that only a great story can. So do yourself a favour and take some time to visit Hepburn House, sit out on the balcony, grab a great coffee and check out the view, you never know who you’ll come across.

The story follows Coral, Andie and Mara as they each visit a patient at the Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital. The three rooms are connected by a single balcony that overlooks the beach. Here the women find time to chat, release frustrations and share in a good cup of coffee.

A lovely intergenerational friendship evolves from the three women supporting each other inside the hospital and later outside that enclosed world.

The View from the Balcony is a wonderful story of friendship and family, of strangers becoming friends in unlikely circumstances. It's about looking after yourself, burnout, PTSD, grief and standing up for yourself.

If you are after a story that is heartwarming and touching The View from the Balcony will not disappoint.

It might seem like I love everything I read but I don’t. I read a lot of books and I only post reviews of the ones I’ve enjoyed and which I hope others will as well. The View from the Balcony is a case in point. I thought this one was positively brilliant, and I don’t mind saying so.

Three women are visitors to three patients at a rehabilitation hospital. Andie was injured when a man suffered a heart attack and accidentally drove his car into a group of people on a street corner. Andie is recovering at home from concussion and has no memory of the incident but she learns that a man who pushed her out of the way of the oncoming car was severely injured and is a patient at the Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital.

Coral’s mother, Val, is a patient at the hospital after a fall. Coral is trying frantically to prepare for an upcoming, eagerly anticipated trip, while at the same time sorting out Val’s care, finalising a work matter, looking after her temporarily disabled daughter and supervising a problem with her absent son’s flat.

Mara has been seconded to assist Estelle, a mean, scary senior partner in the legal firm where Mara works, who is in the hospital also recovering from a serious accident.

A single balcony which connects the three patients’ rooms eventually becomes a place where the women connect. They each empathise with the others’ difficulties and celebrate their happy moments as well, as they sit together on the balcony and gaze over the sparkling blue ocean. The three stories unfold into one memorable, unputdownable, highly recommended book.

Janette Paul is another wonderfully talented Australian writer. Thank you Pan Macmillan for my review copy.

Andie, Coral and Mara become the daily visitors to the three patients at the end of East Wing of Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital.

I had expected a somewhat light contemporary read based on the pastel blue of the cover. I was completely wrong, and I loved it! This book was full of deep, nuanced and complex-but-realistic conversations and I was fully immersed in them.

As each character was introduced, I kept thinking they would be my favourite. But in the end, I really couldn’t choose which story arc hooked me best. Coral’s achievements and dedication to her career and family made me want to be her best friend from the first chapter. Then Andie’s ‘mystery’ surrounding her accident stole my attention right away. I was ready for Mara’s chapters to be ‘plain’ but her dynamics with Estelle turned out to be fiery and exciting.

The crossovers between the characters didn’t come as early as I had expected, but I didn’t mind it at all. Each woman held her own chapters strongly, and by the end of the book they felt like family members to me.

This was such a solid writing, covering important topics women faced at different ages. Mara, Andie, Coral and Estelle represented different decades and phases in a woman’s life. I’m hoping to read more from the author!

The View from the Balcony is a heartwarming novel of friendship and family. Where love, hope and terrible coffee sees three strangers become unlikely friends.

Andie, Coral and Mara meet visiting three patients in the East Wing of Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital.

Andie visits Ben, but she has no memory of this man who pushed her out of the way of a speeding car. A week before Coral is due to fly to New York to present at a conference, her mum has a fall. And the last thing Mara wants is to be assigned to work at the hospital bedside of the much-despised senior partner of her law firm.

A beautiful balcony connects each room and provides a sanctuary and healing place where not only the patients benefit, but also those who visit them.

This was a beautiful read that reminds you that anyone may be struggling with something under the surface. Be that grief, people pleasing, giving up dreams to help others, or just general self doubt. It was great to see these three women connect, support each other and ultimately find themselves on that balcony.

Thank you to @macmillanaus and @janettepaul50 for a #gifted copy to read.

This book is not something I normally would choose to read, however the plot was three women connect when their lives intertwine on a balcony when they’re all either involved or a loved one is involved in an accident.
These women develop friendships based on their hearts needing to be healed.

This was a lovely read however I feel as though this is a book for an acquired audience to which I would highly recommend for this for who would love it

A very enjoyable tale of love & friendship, & women supporting women. Coral, Andie & Mara are likeable & believable, although Estelle is probably my favourite. If Ben seems a little too good to be true, well, that's the beauty of fiction. The chapters & sections made it a very easy, relaxing read. I will be looking for this author at my library.

When I read Janette Paul’s previous novel, The Summer Place, I was incredibly taken with the heartfelt story and wonderfully realised characters. I was therefore very excited to delve into her latest contemporary novel, A View From the Balcony.

A View From the Balcony is another joyful novel celebrating friendship and new beginnings but it’s also an incredibly emotional read with elements of loneliness and grief.

The characters are all connected through the Hepburn House Rehabilitation Hospital and I found this to be the perfect setting for the reader to uncover these women’s pasts and begin to understand them.

Andie wakes up with no memory of a man pushing her out of the way of a speeding car, but she wants to find out who Ben is and why she was outside a bar at 11pm. Coral is on track for the biggest highlight of her career, when her mum has a fall and ends up in hospital. Mara can’t think of anything worse than being assigned to work at the hospital bedside of one of the most feared senior partners at her law firm. Andie, Coral and Mara all become daily visitors to the rehab hospital and the balcony that joins these three rooms becomes a place where their lives will connect and the magic of healing will happen.

What a beautiful and heartwarming story! I loved the idea that chance encounters through circumstances beyond our control can lead to such positive outcomes. The bonds these women form and the heartache and secrets this allows them to share is truly something special. I enjoyed that we got to hear from Andie, Mara and Coral’s POVs. These three women are at very different stages in their lives but they are all bonded by sharing their stories.

This was a book that made me laugh, cry and celebrate with these women the joys of friendship and hope for the future.
