The Enneagrams of the Divine Forms: Perfect, Eternal, Unchanging Truths

Rate this book
Oscar Ichazo, the originator of the Enneagram Theory and Practice, presents a Teaching of the enneagram and its application in his book, The Enneagrams of the Divine Forms–Perfect, Eternal, Unchanging Truths. The Divine Forms Teachings begin with the scientific foundation upon which the enneagrams of Integral Philosophy are based. The book outlines how the Divine Forms are an integral part of the complete Theory of Integralism and how this builds a ‘Theory of Knowledge,’ that otherwise would be baseless. Ichazo provides a comprehensive perspective on the relationship of the Divine Forms with a full description of the nine Fixations, the Trifix, and an ego–reduction of each Fixation. For those interested in a substantial philosophy of Enlightenment, The Enneagrams of the Divine Forms book exposes a fundamental Teaching in which the study and practice with the Divine Forms opens Transcendental Knowledge beyond concepts and language into States of Perfection, Eternity and Innate Awareness.

In this book Ichazo defines the structure of the Soul in terms of 18 Spheres of Perception and Reality, arising from the body with its biological systems that function together as the Somatic Mind (Sphere 18) and the Cognitive Mind (Sphere 17). These two organic and material Spheres give rise to 7 more Spheres that are psychological and Relative, including Sphere 15 where the Enneagram of the Fixations is found. Beyond these are 8 more Spheres (9-2) that are Absolute and a final Sphere 1 that is Transcendental. The Divine Forms are found in Sphere 7, as reflections of the Divine Mind of God. The book discusses Spheres 15 and 7, and explains that each Fixation is an obscuration of a Divine Form. For each of the 9 Divine Forms, it describes the fourteen layers of ego-residue produced by the Fixation as well as the process by which the layers are deconstructed to uncover the Divine Form.

Ichazo describes the Existential Attitudes, whose lower forms are sadness, anger and fear. The higher forms of the Existential Attitudes are the search for the Transcendental Self, the search for a realized Consciousness and the search for true Knowledge or Gnosis; these are the ontological, ethical and metaphysical concerns of a true philosophy. The Divine Forms can be placed into three groups addressing these concerns. This means that each of the Fixations can be related to one of these concerns, so it is possible for humanity to transcend the Fixations and become a divinized humanity. This is the real purpose of Integral Philosophy and the Doctrine of the Fixations.

After this background, each of the Divine Forms is described in detail. I found these is to be most inspiring sections to read and re-read. After the basic description of a Divine Form, there is a “mentational” analysis of it – a twelve-part analysis based on Aristotle’s metaphysics but enlarged from 4 to 12 parts by Ichazo’s Integral Analysis. This analysis gives a brief and very direct summary of each Divine Form, which can be applied to experiences in meditation. For instance, in the three Divine Forms that comprise the ontological group: Divine Truth is accomplished by Innate Awareness of the Transcendental Light, Divine Perfection appears as the perfection of Pure Light, and Divine Love is attained with apprehending the splendor of the Good God.

An enneagram is a 9-pointed figure, and different shapes can be formed by different patterns connecting the nine points. The first part of the book uses the familiar shape for an enneagram, and the second half introduces other shapes formed by different patterns of connections between the Divine Forms. For instance, while meditating with the Enneagram of Integration I had a profound experience of the Lights of the Divine Forms.

This book can be used as a companion to Ichazo’s book “The Enneagrams of the Fixations: The Original Teachings”. Both books discuss the Fixations and the Divine Forms, with different emphases. “The Enneagrams of the Fixations” emphasizes the structure of human ego and includes how each Fixation can degrade into mental illness, so it gives a lot more information about the Fixations than about the Divine Forms. By comparison, “The Enneagrams of the Divine Forms” emphasizes the structure of the Soul and how we can discover the Divine Mind within ourselves by transcending our Fixations, so it gives more information about the Divine Forms than about the Fixations. At a time where the external world seems to be in turmoil and unpredictable, it is very grounding to experience the Divine Forms as eternal and unchanging.
