“Get to the airport early,” they said. “You don’t want to miss your flight.”
I got here three hours before my departure time. But my flight decided to miss me.
It seems like everyone’s flight has been canceled.
They can’t all have weather delays!
All I want is to roast on a beach in Florida and forget all about the fact that I’ve been fired. Dismissed. Discharged. Terminated is the word human resources prefers. Because they’re actual sadists.
The last thing I need is this human-shaped Golden Retriever, who won’t stop smiling at me and telling me it’s not so bad. Things could be worse. No sense being angry about what we can’t control.
I don’t know what I did to attract this man. Was it my entirely unapproachable expression? The way I was screaming at customer service on my phone?
Whatever the reason, I am not sharing a hotel room with him. His snores probably come out in the tune of “You Are My Sunshine.”
He’s too happy to be real. Even if he does seem genuinely interested in helping me find some joy in spite of my current situation.
It’s not like letting him make me smile is going to change anything.
Indie Sparks lives just outside Austin, Texas where she spends her days arguing with her dog about whether or not he really needs to go outside again, and writing strong heroines whose knees go weak for cinnamon roll heroes with dirty mouths and the skills to walk the talk.
She believes steamy rom-coms are the answer. The question is irrelevant.
I thought that the banter between the main characters was witty, and the spice was really good. The plot concept was also clever!
However, I wasn't a huge fan of either of the characters. I felt like their chemistry and the pacing of the story was just a little off.
But novellas can be very hit and miss just because there are so many parts of a story and the characters to squish into a short book. And even though I thought it was a fun read, it was more of a miss for me
This story is for those people who look for their future spouse in the airport! And for everyone else who loves a sweet short story 😉. Zane seems like the perfect guy and he’s committed to breaking down Darby’s walls in the short time they have together. I loved Zane and he definitely won me over before he did Darby lol.
Changed Plan was just so fun and spicy. I have loved Indie's books and the fun and snark in them since the first one I've read and they never fail.to put a smile on my face. Darby and Zane are so cute a canceled flight Meet Cute was just what I needed lol.
This is your first published book??? There is no way! I was skeptical going into your book as you are a first time author. However, about 30% in I could not stop. I was hooked!!! Chapter 15 made me burst into tears and I immediately texted my book besties to say “Read this now!”
Whenever Aidan wrote as Hunter my heart ripped in two! I literally felt like I understood Rosie and Aiden better in every one of those moments. Chapter after chapter had me welling up from breathing with your characters! The depth *chefs kiss*
Lastly, this made me think of how I fell for my husband; I sent him coded texts to say it without saying it!!! Thank you for this book. Thank you!
With deepest gratitude,
Heidi
Thank you Book Sirens for the chance to read this book! I was not paid for my opinion.
This is an ARC Review. I want to thank Indie Sparks and Harlequin Trade Publishing for allowing me the chance to read this book ahead of release day! This book was the first book from Indie Sparks and a short almost novella like book. It was over a span of two days on Darcy and Zan’s experiences during a weather event. While there is no way I would have found myself in this predicament of meeting a stranger/borderline stalker, I found this book to be a fun read. Making the best of a situation with the right person is what this book is about at its core. While the book read easily, there were pieces and parts of the book that felt skipped over which I believe allowed for the lower page count. The spicy scenes were spicy for sure but could have used some more dialogue externally or internally.
“Get to the airport early,” they said. But no one warned Darby that life might be waiting there to sucker punch her and toss a golden retriever in human form directly into her path.
Fresh off a firing, frazzled, and Florida-bound, Darby is the kind of heroine who doesn’t suffer fools—or cheerful strangers—lightly. But when a blizzard turns the terminal into purgatory, she’s stuck with Zane, a too-handsome, too-happy actuary determined to be the sunshine to her storm cloud. What follows is a 36-hour detour filled with sharp banter, begrudging laughs, and a chemistry that simmers hotter than a runway tarmac in July.
Indie Sparks has a gift for breezy, emotionally grounded storytelling, and Changed Plan is no exception. The novella zips along with clever dialogue and undeniable grumpy-sunshine energy. Darby’s internal monologue is razor-sharp and genuinely funny, while Zane’s “dog with a dream” optimism toes the line between charming and insufferable in the best way. I especially loved how Sparks gave us a bit of emotional weight behind each character’s circumstances—Darby’s career loss, Zane’s urgency to get to his mom—without ever making the story feel heavy.
The spice level is solid for a novella: steamy enough to satisfy but not overdone. It’s all about build-up and payoff, and Sparks handles both with finesse. The train ride scene? Chefs kiss.
My only quibble is that novellas sometimes struggle with character depth or pacing, and there were a few moments where I wanted just a little more time with Darby and Zane. But considering the short format, Sparks pulls off quite a bit, layering vulnerability and heat into a tight, satisfying package.
Bottom line? Changed Plan is the rom-com equivalent of a perfectly timed layover with a very attractive stranger who actually listens—and buys you snacks. It’s quick, quirky, and just spicy enough to warm up your afternoon. Fans of The Unhoneymooners or One Last Stop will find this a delightful, low-angst escape.

Sparks fly in the airport terminal in this romantic comedy novella after Darby dumps coffee all over Zane's shoes.
Darby has just been laid off and is furious at the world. Her mood isn't helped when she learns that her flight is delayed due to a winter storm that doesn't look to be clearing any time soon. When she accidently runs into a handsome man by the name of Zane and spills coffee all over his shoes, Darby never could have guessed that this happy-go-lucky man might be the only thing to get her through this storm without losing her mind.
This was a fun quick read! The banter and wit between Darby and Zane are one of my favorite parts of this novella, so it's no surprise that humor is one of its greatest strengths.
Getting stuck in an airport for days seems like a complete nightmare. I mean, they're crowded, they're noisy, and you find yourself forced to sleep on the floor. But for Darby and Zane, getting stuck in an airport is the chance of a lifetime. Darby and Zane have a great meet cute that involves Darby dumping coffee on Zane, and Zane turning it into an opportunity to buy her a new coffee in return. Darby is so grumpy and cynical, so it is really fun to see her encounter someone like Zane who brushes off the bad and focuses solely on the good opportunities that arise in any situation. These two truly have entertaining chemistry.
I appreciate how this book showcases how sometimes the oddest and most unlikely of events end up leading to the best of circumstances. It's crazy to think that one could meet one's future partner while delayed in an airport, but that's the glory of this world. The universe works in mysterious ways, and stories such as this are really cool tales of first-time meetings.
The spice in this one was scorching! I appreciate that Zane and Darby didn't immediately jump into bed with one another despite their obvious attraction. It doesn't take them long to go all the way with one another, but the fact that they held back made me appreciate them more both as characters. The spicy scenes in this one definitely had me blushing, but they were a great addition to this romcom novella.
Overall, "Changed Plan" is a witty and spicy novella featuring two really fun characters. Darby and Zane are quite different people, but their grumpy x sunshine nature is so entertaining (especially when they are bantering with one another). The premise of meeting someone you're romantically interested in at an airport while one's flight is delayed is quite fun. I enjoyed my time reading this one and am intrigued to check out the other novellas in this series!
Indie Sparks opens Changed Plan with pure, relatable chaos. Darby’s bad day has somehow snowballed into a full-blown unraveling—fired from her job, stranded at the airport, scalded by coffee, and steamrolled by an entire terminal of indifferent strangers. Through her sarcastic inner monologue and simmering frustration, Sparks introduces a heroine who is prickly, sharp-witted, and fiercely human. The opening chapters are a masterclass in setting voice and tone: hilarious, hectic, and full of genuine emotional weight hiding beneath the surface-level snark. It’s the kind of introduction that makes readers think, “Yep, I’ve been there,” while also knowing Darby’s story is going somewhere unexpected and heart-changing.
At its core, Changed Plan is about life’s curveballs—and the sometimes infuriatingly cheerful people who help us survive them. When Darby’s plan to escape to a Florida beach is grounded (literally and metaphorically), she’s forced to confront not just canceled flights but the emotional baggage she’s been dragging around. Enter the “human-shaped Golden Retriever,” a relentlessly optimistic stranger whose good-natured charm is both a balm and a challenge to her cynicism. Sparks doesn’t rush the romance; instead, she lets it build slowly and organically through moments of humor, resistance, and reluctant vulnerability. The chemistry is all the more satisfying for its realism. Fans of books like The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren or Beach Read by Emily Henry will love the way Changed Plan blends smart, contemporary humor with heartfelt moments of growth, reminding us that sometimes, when everything goes wrong, something incredibly right might just be waiting on the other side.

This was really cute and funny. Zane and Darby are stuck at the airport because of a blizzard. Both are trying to get to Florida, but for very different reasons. Darby is headed to the beach for a vacation. Though, since she got fired that morning, she would be spending the time looking for a new job. Zane is going home for his mother's birthday, which he knows may be her last. But when he sees Darby in the airport, he's drawn to her. He wants to meet her. To make her laugh. Darby wants none of that. She's had a really bad week, and now she's stuck in this airport with a ridiculously hot guy following her around like a stalker. She doesn't want to get to know him. He could be a serial killer for all she knows. So she doesn't really know why she lets him keep following her around. She should stop him. They should be going their separate ways. But for some reason, he's easy to talk to and he makes her laugh. She finds herself actually liking his company. This was a lot of fun. It started out with snarky banter and a grumpy-sunshine vibe. Darby slowly let her grumpy demeanor fall as Zane kept her occupied with dinner, drinks and even a train ride in the airport. And when he found her again to give her a blanket from his hotel room (shirtless, BTW) she was actually happy to see him. It was two people with a lot going on in their lives, and just trying to forget for a while. It just proves that sometimes the best things in life come from the most unexpected places.

Freshly downsized from her PR job, Darby is determined to move forward with her planned beach vacation, but a blizzard grounds her and everyone else trying to fly out of the local airport. While on a contentious phone call with a ticket agent, she notices a fellow passenger smiling while not even trying to pretend he’s not listening to her conversation. Irritated with everything, she stomps over to give him a piece of her mind, and he only becomes more solicitous of her, offering to share the hotel room he quietly booked while everyone else was hoping to make their flight, even offering to pay for a meal and a change of clothes.
Actuary Zane is immediately taken with the prickly, curvy beauty who keeps shooting daggers his way. Although he’s also anxious to make it to his mother’s bedside in Palm Beach for what’s certain to be her last birthday, he sees an opportunity to connect with Darby, and he wears her down.
Over the next 36 hours, they get to know each other physically and otherwise, but will their connection outlast their snow delay?
This was a short, very steamy instalove novella. I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author and booksirens, and I’m sharing my honest impressions.
Love the snark & golden retriever vibes in this quick little novella read!!
This novella was so much fun to read. I mean Darby and all her snarky glory was something to behold and Zane's unwavering determination to get his girl was so swoon-worthy. These two were such a fun read with the tension brewing between them to the enviable combustion when Darby lets go and Zane takes control.
If you want a fun steamy quick read in one sitting that not only brings the spice, banter, and a feel good storyline that gives you HEA from a chance encounter this is the book to grab!! Each book in this series has been a LOL fun read that has all the feels so far. Darby & Zane are two characters who both are facing challenging life circumstances and being forced to a standstill in the airport becomes a twist of fate neither were looking for. I love that the author paints a vivid world-building and layers of emotions for each character that just pulls you in from the very start till the end. You don't feel like it's rushed or missing anything as the dynamics unfold between the characters. I love that this is a quick escape read that just leaves you extremely satisfied and wanting the next story ASAP.
So if you love black cat energy with some snarky banter then Darby is your girl. If you love a good golden retriever MMC with swoon-worthy moments that bring the heat Zane will definitely be your guy. It's fun, angsty, LOL, spicy, and a sweet HEA. This author never disappoints with equal amounts of a great storyline and epic steamy spicy moments that's for sure. So if you are new to her or a devoted follower this is an Absolute Must Read that allows you a brief fun escape that leaves you with a smile. I highly recommend it!!
This novella is the perfect mix of sweet, spicy, and laugh-out-loud fun! Changed Plan delivers everything you want in a romantic comedy, with witty banter, easy chemistry, and just the right amount of steam to keep things interesting.
Darby is having the worst day ever—she’s been fired, her flight is canceled, and nothing is going her way. Enter Zane, the charming stranger who’s instantly drawn to her and can’t shake the attraction. Their connection is effortless, their back-and-forth is hilarious and heartfelt, and the train ride to Rome scene? Absolutely adorable.
The dual POV flows seamlessly, giving insight into both Darby’s struggles and Zane’s growing feelings as he slowly breaks down her walls. It’s lighthearted, easy to read, and keeps you smiling the whole way through. The romance builds naturally, with just the right balance of tension, flirty moments, and sizzling spice.
At under 200 pages, this novella is a quick, feel-good escape that hits all the right notes. If you love fast-paced, witty rom-coms with a swoon-worthy MMC and a lovable FMC, Changed Plan is a must-read!
"Zane Jacoby is the kryptonite to my well-honed defenses. But at the same time he makes me feel stronger. It makes no sense. None of this makes any damn sense. Nobody finds their soulmate while stranded in a fucking airport."
This book had me smiling ear to ear from start to finish! It's a quick read filled with witty banter and the characters are all so loveable, it was so easy to get invested. The plot was great and kept me interested all the way through and the spice was definitely spicing, but it didn't take away from the plot in the slightest. This book reminded me of how much I love comedy romance! This was the first book I read from this author, but it definitely wont be the last! Perfect palate cleanser if you need one from a heavier read! If you love lighthearted rom-coms with great chemistry and laugh-out-loud moments, this one’s for you!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
"Unbelievable. No one cares about anyone else anymore. We are an entire society of ruthless assholes."
Darby and Zane get caught in some unfortunate travel complications when weather interrupts their visits to Florida. This book was short and sweet, a quick read (119 pages on Kindle) that delivers a bit of angst and is heavy on the sweet. These two need some support, someone to lean on - will they be that for each other? Finding out is half the fun. I enjoyed this book, it made me laugh, the spice was spicin' and the pacing was perfect. I almost envy the adventure they were on while stuck in the airport! This was my first Indie Sparks book. She has a collection of work that is 4.5+ (ratings on Goodreads) and I can't wait to delve into her library!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thanks, BookSirens and Indie Sparks for letting me read this ARC!
"...but nobody's perfect. There is a flaw in there somewhere."
What happens when you get snowed in at the airport?
This is a fun grumpy and sunshine story. Darby's having a lousy day, which gets worse when she gets stuck at the airport. Then she runs into Zane, who's determined to make her day better.
Most of the action takes place over just a couple of days. I loved the banter between them, and how they clicked with each other and managed to make the most of a bad situation. And yes, there's a decent amount of steam.
The pacing was good and it never felt like they were rushing things, no matter how fast they went. The epilogue is bittersweet, but it's good to see them with their HEA.
I'm enjoying this series of romances, they're a great lesson in not judging the person in front of you, you never know what's happening in their life.
This was a cute, fun, quick read. This was a good storyline that I just couldn’t get enough of. I actually got through the novella in a few hours, it’s less than 150 pages. But don’t let the length fool you as it has so much packed between the pages. I absolutely loved/enjoyed the banter. It was actually one of my favorite things about this book. The characters of Darby and Zane were well written, each dealing with issues but trying to make the best of the situation they both find themselves in. They both had great chemistry and it was nice to read how their relationship developed. Overall this was a fun and quick read which I found to be pretty enjoyable. It was written well with a good plot that moved quickly but didn’t feel like it lacked in any way. If you’re a fan of romantic comedies that you should give this book a go.
Super quick and sweet meet cute story! A love at first sight (for him), grumpy (her)-sunshine (him) story where both are having a terrible moment but he sees how she (and them together) would make life better. Darby is having a really though day when she runs into this weirdly happy white shoe wearing guy called Zane, who insists on trying to turn her frown into a smile. And stuck in the airport for days he actually ends up succeeding (much to her surprise). But when the bubble of being snowed in ends, and they are finally able to get on a plane will fate act again to get them back together? I would have loved some extra details in the last couple of chapters for how their story actually develops and having that would have definitely given me that extra something I needed for the story 3.5*
Darby Bartlett and Zane Jacoby ended up stranded in the airport when a blizzard canceled all the flights. Darby had gotten there hours early and was furious that, after losing her job, she can’t even get to Florida to unwind on the beach! She angrily watches a stranger smiling at her, obviously listening to her phone call as she screams about the delay. He gets too close and she accidentally spills coffee over him. But while everyone else waits around to see if they can still get a flight out, he obtains a hotel room in the airport in case an overnight becomes necessary and they run out of rooms. When he offers sharing the room with her, will Darby accept? Will Zane’s persistent sunny disposition finally win her over? (He’ll probably put a smile on the reader’s face too!)

Stuck in an airport, grounded by a snow storm, the last thing that Darby expected was to fall in love. Zane, ever the optimist, can't let a chance pass by and is determined that Darby is the one for him. Together they have an interesting adventure in the airport, with lots of humour, sarcasm and full of giggles. I loved all the adventures these two managed while snowed in at an airport. I loved how Zane was so optimistic and despite Darby's attempts to avoid him, and keep him at a distant. I loved how he took it all in his stride. I loved how Darby was unable to resist him despite her initial hesitations. Another great, funny read from this hilarious author who never fails to create a smile and a laugh.
This book is a cute short story that involves flights canceling with love brewing.
I like how in this book the MMC turns a bad situation into a good one. Not knowing that Darby got fired, just knowing that he was intrigued by her, Zane walks to her. But what he doesn't realize is that he was walking too close and when Darby turned around, she ran into him, spilling her coffee on him all the way to his shoes.
Immediately offering to replace both, Zane refuses and instead, buys her a cup of coffee in the hopes of getting to know her better.
The best part was their imaginary trip to Rome and seeing how well they fit together, and how they turned a bad situation into a good one.
I really love these short novellas and I can't wait for the next!
I absolutley loved this book and devouded it in one sitting.
Darby is having a bad day, she's been fired, and now her flight is cancelled. The last thing she needs is a guy who's made it his mission to make her smile.
Zane gives off major golden retriever vibes. When he sees Darby, he's instantly smitten and determined to get to know her better. He could have easily felt a little stalker-ish, but Zane is so sweet, respectful, and funny, he couldn't be anything but loveable.
I loved the time they spent together, it was funny and sarcastic and they totally got each other.
Oh my gosh! That was so ridiculously cute. A little bit of spice, a little bit of angst, and so much witty banter. Darby’s prickly like a porcupine, so it’s safe to say she’s got that ‘black cat’ energy. She flat-out calls Zane a golden retriever, and I can’t find it in myself to disagree. On the surface, they should have nothing in common, yet while stranded in an airport, they discover that they’re not quite as different as one would think. I loved this. It was the perfect size for the story it told, but I still kind of wish there’d been even more of it. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
Darby what a day fired and now stuck in an airport due to a bad snow storm and all she wanted was to start her vacation on the beach that had long been planned. She was grumpy, unhappy, and wondering about her finding a new job, when she turned and bumped into Zane. Zane was on his way home for his mother’s birthday and he was not happy about being stuck. But, something about Darby had him wanting to make her laugh. Who would have thought a chance encounter could lead to where? What job should she take that she had interviewed for? What about Izzie his sister wanting him home? This was an adorable story just right for ending the day to unwind.
Who could imagine being snowed in at an airport could be so life changing.
Darby is not having a good day and her brand of spark and sarcasm is totally relatable, as is her reaction to Zane. And that's one of the things I love about this story, whilst Zane is totally adorable, Darby is keeping it real and that's where the chemistry meshes and you become invested in their blossoming friendship and hopeful that things progress.
The spice is perfect and so many tiny personal moments add to the character development and packing in this much feeling, humour and content into a novella, is an amazing feat.
An easy romance telling the story of two strangers that meet stranded in an airport due to heavy snowfall and all flights being cancelled. Darby is in a sour mood, being fired, jobless, and now unable to take her desired vacation thanks to the weather. Zane is trying to fly back home to celebrate his mother's birthday, when he notices Darby - and decides he wants to know her better. Light, sometimes funny, sometimes more intense, it is a fast and relaxing story that shows an unexpected moment and circumstances changing two lives. Both main characters are completely mundane and relatable by many readers, not perfect by far, but finding their way to each other on a whim. And it works.
This was a sweet and sexy book with a great premise. Two people, Zane and Darby, meet while stuck in an airport thanks to a snowstorm. The two of them get to know one another while the storm rages outside. Zane was such a sweetie, and totally enamored of Darby from the very beginning. And while she was reticent at first, Darby couldn’t help falling for Zane’s charm and humor. The two of them were so good together, with lots of banter and some seriously sexy times. It was a fun, short read and I definitely enjoyed it. Recommended.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It was my first book by Indie Sparks and I will definitely go for more. I didn't read Book 1 of Rocky Start Romance series, but this - Book 2 was just spectacular. I loved almost all about it - especially to follow how their dynamics is changing. Human shaped golden retriever Zane, who is incredibly attractive. And funny. And kind. And how Darby and Zane opens to each other. Amazing read, you can't just put it down while not finished. And it was quite short read, but so incredibly intense. And so well written, loved their dialogues. And yes, it all started in Rome :) Fictional one, but who cares...

Novellas can be a bit hit and miss. They are short stories so the reader doesn't always get to know the characters and it's often a bit "wham, bam, thank you ma'am"! This was a bit different. Stuck in an airport during a blizzard, Darcy and Zane didn't have much else to do but get to know each other. I found I really connected which the two main characters and I especially loved Zane in his persistence of attempts to spend time with Darcy and get to know her despite her resistance. A little sweetness, a little spice,a few laughs and a good story-line make this a five star read
