Children's graphic novel. This is book 3 of the Mystery Science Detectives series, a Korean manga series for elementary readers. In this book our kids have a mystery presented by their club sponsor. Her dad is a fisherman and had an unnerving sighting of alien-like creatures and sparkling water by a nearby island. The students set off to explore the island at low tide and figure out what is truly going on. They thought they followed their teacher out there, but soon find that not to be the case. But someone is clearly there as they see other footprints. Who could it be and does it have anything to do with their case?

This series is fun because it shows the kids solving the mysteries by asking questions, taking photographs, and using their knowledge of both facts and technology. There are little puzzles throughout, including a maze, a spot the difference page, and a key point quiz.

Graphic Novel
This third in the series takes readers on a island and sea adventure. The team is asked to solve a mystery for their teacher. Her father thinks he encountered aliens as he returned from his fishing trip. The group works together to figure out what actually happened. As they explore the island, they also encounter others who claim to be detectives also. I appreciate how our Detectives rescue them and bring them off the island too. Ahn weave science seamlessly through the story. Sometimes in the dialogue; sometimes in separate interludes. She challenges readers with puzzles to solve and information to learn. A terrific series for mid elementary level readers.

Glowing aliens? A mystery by the shore? Sounds like the perfect job for the Mystery Science Detectives! In this third adventure, the clever after-school crew dives into strange sightings off Seagull Island, using science and teamwork to separate fact from fiction.

It’s fast, fun, and packed with curious twists, a great pick for kids who love a mix of mystery, adventure, and a dash of science smarts!
