Meeting an old enemy will lead to a chain of unexpected discoveries, encounters, and a contract that you don’t want, but you have to make, because evil never slumbers. High levels, ranks, and titles that the citizens of Drikar struggle to normally achieve are a tempting reward. Most importantly, they all belong to the same sect... It would be all right, because Raven has emerged victorious from bleaker fights before, but this time, the stakes are much, much higher.
I have read and listened to the entire series at least twice. I loved the first book and was so-so on the second and third as they got a little weird. I felt the series definitely begin to pick up steam with around the 4th and 5th books. There was such a delay with the 10th book that I relistened to the entire series before listening to it. I was terribly hyped, but utterly disappointed after getting it. It progressed the story very little, created more tasks and left several others unaddressed. It has been 2 years since the 10th book was released and I was ecstatic to get the next one. I have tried listening to it three times and can only make it about an hour before I find I am zoning out. It is boring, the narration is juvenile and frankly the bland same ol' characters have lost my interest. Part of this may be due to several other fantastic series releasing and progressing in the 2 years this author took to get his book out. Ultimately, I returned the audiobook and will not be seeking out any paper copies. I am done with this series.
This time Raven is boxing all over chasing a large quest line. But no matter how much he digs the secrets keep getting deeper and deeper. Now a new enemy is appearing. I like the evolution of the world in response to the changes happening due to the game. Raven’s advancement in this book, albeit he gained levels, really pushes that idea to the background as there is something deeper he is developing. Still a fun read.
