DO YOU WANT TO TRUST ME?

Each of the stories in the new Sleigh Ride series will be a stand-alone story. They are clean, historical tales set in various locations and include wintertime activities, including sleigh rides. These stories can be read in any order.

The story takes place in Snowflake, Colorado, and begins in November 1882. Ruby Wakefield has been alone in the world since the death of her father. She is running his business, The Snowflake Sleigh Company. But there are many, especially men, in town who don’t feel it is proper and make it hard for her to make a living. She has to do her best with her two horses, Beau and Joe-Joe.

The story’s plot will have Ruby driving a couple, Clarke Everly and his fiancé Marcella Walker, on a sleigh ride around Snowflake Lake. Clarke is easygoing and Marcella is demanding, trying to control the situation. She definitely is a woman who doesn’t accept the word ‘no.’

Clarke: Are you comfortable, my dear?
Marcella: Yes, Clarke. This is so exciting!
Ruby: Ready.?
Marcella: Yes. Please move on. Oh, Clarke, this is so fun. Tell her to go faster.
Clarke: Marcella, dear, I’m sure our driver knows what’s safe. Let’s leave that to her, shall we?
Marcella: Don’t placate me, Clarke dear. I am not a child.
Clarke: You know best, dear. I like this speed. I don’t want our experience to be over too quickly. And I want to enjoy the time with you.
Marcella: Well, all right.

The journey will continue this way, with Marcella trying to control everything and eventually getting so angry she will exit the sleigh and leave—where she berates Clark and lets him know she is done with him—heading back to Denver.

The story is mystery, suspense, accidents, mishaps, and danger. Someone is sabotaging Ruby’s livelihood and she isn’t sure who or why. Clarke stays in town—and then makes his way over to Loveland where he will join a Pinkerton agency. But Ruby still isn’t sure she trusts him. It seems he is always around when trouble is. Who and why will all be part of the story. Will Ruby acknowledge that Clarke is a friend and not a foe? Will there be more between them in the future? The one thing they both had in common was their Christian faith—and it helped pull them together.

Who to trust?

Ruby is strong and determined, she will prove herself to the town and the council....but when they doubt her ability to continue the business, can she also trust their judgement of others? She is a little lost and alone and it hurts your heart to see her hesitation when Clarke offers a helping hand, yet she doubts his motives. You can feel Clarke's confusion and bewilderment as his assistance is refused. Thankfully Clarke likes a good puzzle, and Ruby's "misfortunes" are too much of a puzzle for him to pass up. It is lovely to see Ruby's walls fall as Clarke earns her trust and she opens her heart to the possibility of love.
A sweet Christmas read on Kindle Unlimited.

Fun and excitement

Such a fun and exciting story about how we perceive one thing and it turns out to be another. Clarke and his fiancé have an argument and she calls off the wedding. Ruby is struggling to keep up with her parents Sleigh Riding business, now only someone is sabotaging her. She also finds herself attracted to the Pinkerton Agent that she suspects. Great characters and a wonderful story.

I’ve always dreamed about going on a real sleigh ride, complete horses and flying over snow. Ms. Schalachter’s beautiful descriptiveness gave me a taste of that but it was even better because it was in the 1800’s.
Ruby Wakfield is not only dealing with the death of her beloved father, trying to continue his dream he worked so hard to build but also dealing with the prejudice of her era against women being business owners. A lot for a young woman alone to deal with. It is no wonder her attitude is one of distrust of others.
Her sheer determination, and just the physical stamina it took to operate a sleigh touring business seems overwhelming to me. Yet, Ruby wasn’t just any young woman, she had spunk and fortitude.
After meeting Clarke Everly when he and his finance hired her for a tour, things change. His spoilt wealthy “sweetheart” through a hissy fit when Ruby refuses to endanger them and breaks their engagement.
Clarke, a detective with famous Pinkerton Detective Agency, decides to remain in a nearby town. He is able to secure a job with Pinkertons there. I have read so much and long been fascinated about this amazing sleuthing organization.
He is attracted and concerned for Ruby’s well-being. This unease increases as seemingly small but dangerous incidents begin to happen to her. At first she is rejects his observations and desire to help. It isn’t long before the accidents grow increasingly dangerous and she relying on him.
The book is filled with so much suspense, unexpected surprises and excitement! I was sad when it ended!
I received this book free from the author through E-blast in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated are my own.
