Wilcox Grove #2

In the Stars Rewritten

Rate this book
Seven months ago, Scott Preston visited home and met the girl of his dreams. She’s fierce, loud, authentic, kind, and gorgeous in a way that altered his brain chemistry. But fate wasn’t having it, and they both went to their respective homes hundreds of miles apart. Now he’s back, and she’s standing in his house. He’s determined not to let her go again, but she’s hesitant to take that leap.

Piper Price is used to being the life of the party, the one you call for a great time. She’s always said she’s good in small doses, but she’s rarely found anybody interested in sticking around. She wants stability and a partner, but she isn’t willing to lose herself to get that. Now she’s tangled up in the small town of Wilcox Grove, and is terrified one wrong step will tear everything apart.

In the Stars Rewritten is a small-town, second chance, roommates, he falls first, golden retriever MMC adult romance.

After nearly half a decade of practicing law, Kim Swizz is now a recovering attorney, living her best life writing small-town romance. Kim has always had a passion for creative writing but has never published a novel (unless you count the book she wrote and had bound in first grade, a titillating story entitled “The Cat is Eating”) — until now. She is excited to leave behind the days of drafting contracts and start this new chapter.

A forever Jersey girl turned former Arizona resident, Kim now calls Boston home with her husband, though they love to travel together.

When she is not writing spicy scenes or making her readers cry, you can find her crocheting tiny things, knitting, embroidering, cross-stitching, bullet journaling — you get the point.

Kim is never without her emotional support Kindle and is an avid F1 fan, keeping up with news on all of the drivers, but mostly Carlos Sainz.

Kim is an unapologetic Disney adult who loves the smell of fall, small animals, and dancing her heart out (and Carlos Sainz).

I really thought I was going to love this book—and for the first 70%, I did. The banter, chemistry, and emotional setup all worked so well. But once the miscommunication trope took over, it lost me.

I don’t usually mind miscommunication when it adds depth, but the main female character’s constant avoidance became frustrating. While I appreciated the realistic portrayal of avoidant attachment, it got hard to root for her, especially when her actions didn’t match the “boundaries” she claimed to set. If the roles were reversed, I think readers would’ve been far less forgiving.

The MFC had a lot going on—family conflict, financial stress, identity struggles—but most of it felt unresolved.

As for the MMC, he had sweet moments and great chemistry, but his golden-retriever energy didn’t always mesh with his bedroom persona. And the “princess” nickname? Just was not for me...

The third-act breakup and rushed resolution didn’t land for me either.

Overall, the book had heart and potential, but the ending left me a bit disappointed.

getting to visit wilcox grove again would have been a treat no matter what. getting to experience piper and scott find their version of forever together in that magical place? it was everything.

i loved how everything felt familiar; the locations like barefoot bake and lake, the people (grateful bob shout out!!!!), and the coziness that is barefoot lake. but the story was so different from book one. perfectly small town.

piper is stunning and smart and strong. there is no other man that sees all of that more than scott, and i’m so thankful to get to witness a front row seat to his pov. (am also a lil jealous.) …the same could be said for piper when she’s looking at scotty. (on his knees) (in a LIBRARY!) (who said that?) but for real, scott is that guy. he’s kind and soft and just so good.

but their flaws keep them real, and that’s what makes this one of my favorite messy romances. they both make mistakes and work to repair their foundation. they both put in the genuine effort to carve out spaces in their hearts for each other in a way that lets you believe it’ll always be piper and scotty showing up for each other. bumping hips in the kitchen while cooking, laughing at their mishaps, and kissing under the stars. writing their own tale, and all that.

We are so back in Wilcox Grove! Barefoot Lake was such a delight to read so I was very much looking forward to this second installment to the series.

First the good! I love the small town vibes and how quickly they are to accept Piper. I want to move here so badly. 🥹 I really did like Piper and Scott together when they were getting to know each other. Plus their banter was really cute! I still love Alice so much and loved seeing more of her in this book again.

The relationship between Piper and Scott, I feel overall, was adorable. There were times I think Scott was being TOO nice and I don’t know, I guess I like my fictional men a little more broody. 🤣 I absolutely loved Piper as a person. Her trying to make something of herself after what she went through, especially with her parents, was admirable. Things did get a bit spicy so I give it 2 🌶️ out of 5.

However, some things confused me a bit like Piper being taller than Scott but then there weren’t many mentions of that being the case. In one part, he bends down to kiss her while she’s standing so it threw me off a bit. Like are they just the same height? I didn’t like the self sabotage bit either and I definitely didn’t like him trying to help the way he did. I also wish we got more clarity on how Piper handled that afterwards and I did want to see a more self empowering moment with her parents.

I am absolutely indecisive right now between a 3 or 4 stars because I felt like it started off so exciting and intriguing. However, it lost steam in the storyline towards the middle and then the ending felt too long to me. It’s still a really great story but maybe these specific tropes weren’t for me.

I am hoping and crossing all fingers we get Eli’s story next because he has me absolutely intrigued.

Thank you Kim Swizz for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.

In the Stars Rewritten is the second book in The Wilcox Grove series, and I’m so happy to be back in one of my favorite fictional places — Barefoot Lake.

This time we follow Piper, Alice’s best friend, who shows up on the porch of Alice’s (aka Scott’s) house after walking away from a toxic job. Scott is Jake’s brother — and 100% golden retriever energy: loyal, sweet, and quietly swoon-worthy.

Piper is his perfectly imperfect match — bold, messy, real — and navigating some deep-rooted family stuff.

It’s a roommate-to-lovers, small-town romance that’s equal parts cozy, spicy, and emotionally grounded. I devoured it.

I loved this book. I want to hang out at the bookshop, go to trivia night, kick back and have a deep talk with Grateful Bob, and be friends with this entire crew. If I could step inside any story, it would be this one.

Thank you, Kim, for the chance to revisit Barefoot Lake. I’m so grateful to have read this early 🤍🚤 Thank you for my copy.

I love the Gilmore Girls vibes in this small town romance series! I read book 1 (Barefoot Lake) for the cozy fall foliage vibes and I was so ready for the summer campfire vibes in book 2. In fact, I read this while camping for the first time. I am like Piper and prefer cabins for indoor plumbing and a bed lol.

I like that Piper is a tall girlie because that was me in most past relationships hehe. She was so confident at the start of the book, I was surprised she became so shy and unsure of herself around Scott and in her new job. Barefoot Bake and Literary Lake are such genius business ideas, it makes me want to open a bookstore cafe where I can host events in my own small town!!

Overall, it was a fun summer read and I am so grateful to Kim Swizz for sending me a digital ARC! Can’t wait for book 3!

This was so cute and exactly what I needed. Small town romance, interconnected, golden retriever MMC. The banter was so good, the chemistry. The setting was perfect, I want to visit Wilcox Grove.

ARC Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Is it really impossible to jump into a book and join that reality instead of this one? I wish I could live in Wilcox Grove. I enjoyed visiting the small town of Wilcox Grove in Kim’s Barefoot Lake novel, but In The Stars Rewritten made me fall in love with this fictional place and all the people that live there.

As someone who, like Piper, has been made to feel like I am too much and I have spent years trying to take up less space in the world, reading Scott and Piper’s story gave me hope that one day someone will see me the way Scott sees Piper. He is the definition of “if he wanted to, he would”; the ever loyal, loving, and kinda goofy, golden retriever guy, and his goal of making Piper feel seen, heard, and loved for who she truly is makes him the ultimate summer book boyfriend.

As a small town New England girl who loves being on the lake, loves love and romance, and loves a good old man hippie character , Kim’s books the perfect combination of all of my favorite things. 100% worth the read, even if I can’t really go to Wilcox Grove.

Title: In the Stars Rewritten: Wilcox Grove (Book 2)
Author: Kim Swizz
Genre: Contemporary Romance / RomCom
Pages: 358

Rating: 4⭐️/5

“What happened, happened, and I can’t undo it. The best things to do now is just delete it from my memory forever.”

Scott Preston thought he’d left his biggest “what if” behind eight months ago when he chickened out of asking Piper Price on a lake date—too cold, too risky, too much like falling for someone way out of his league. Now he’s back in Wilcox Grove as her surprise roommate, and this time he’s not backing down. Problem is, Piper’s sworn off anything serious after too many guys who lose interest once the fun wears off, leaving her in a spiral of meaningless hookups and impulsive haircuts. She can’t drag Scott into that mess, especially since he’s her best friend Alice’s future brother-in-law. Between Alice’s wedding planning, Scott’s relentless charm (and that annoying “Princess” nickname), and advice from Grateful Bob—the town’s ageless sage with a loon obsession—Piper’s carefully built walls are crumbling fast. A flirty second-chance romance where sharing a kitchen might just lead to sharing everything else.

IN THE STARS REWRITTEN is a charming small-town romance with all the right vibes—slow-burn tension, surprise roommates, and a golden retriever guy who’s been smitten since day one. Piper is fiery, independent, and working her dream job in a cozy little bookstore filled with plants (seriously, goals), while Scott, her best friend’s boyfriend’s brother, is quietly determined to win her over without pushing too hard. Their chemistry is warm, messy, and real in the best way. If you love second chances, soft boys who fall hard, and that perfect blend of cozy and emotional, this one’s definitely worth the read!

A big thanks to Kim Swizz for providing me with a digital ARC of this book!

In The Stars Rewritten by Kim Swizz is a small-town, second chance romance following Piper Price and Scott Preston. This is book 2 in the Wilcox Grove series, there are content warnings due to some mental health struggles so check that out and I always appreciate a Spice Guide which this book has too.

Piper Price, our FMC, is the life of the party, intelligent, funny, and of course beautiful. She’s got such a strained relationship with her parents, it’s very heartbreaking to be truly honest. So after getting tired of her terrible boss she walks away from her career and life in Boston to show up unannounced at her best friend Alice’s doorstep. But when the door and phone calls go unanswered she goes in and is surprised by Alices boyfriend’s younger and sexy brother.

Scott Preston, our MMC, is everything a sexy golden retriever of a man can be. He got bored of his life in NYC so he packed up and moved back home to Wilcox Grove where he now works remotely and lives next door to his brother and in his brother’s girlfriend’s house. To his surprise Alices best friend shows up at his doorstep looking for Alice and to say he is smitten is an understatement. But Piper is not the settle down type and he has accepted the challenge in changing her mind about love.

This was such a cute small town romance, I loved everything about Piper and Scott’s relationship. He is so obsessed with her but in such a beautiful not toxic way, the kind of obsessed that just wants to help and protect and I am here for it. Pipers parents were so ugly to her and I know that a lot of people have strained relationships like that but it hurts to read just the same. If you love a small town romance, with a touch of spice and an MMC who calls his woman Princess then you will love this one 💫

I received an advance review copy and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

In the Stars Rewritten
by: Kim Swizz

4.75 ⭐️

In case you were wondering: yes, I am still very much in love with Wilcox Grove.

Say one thing about Kim, one thing at all - she can write the heck out of a book boyfriend. I am obsessed with Jake, but his brother Scott joined him up in the ranks after this. Truly the sweetest, golden retriever man ever. The way he cares and pines over Piper is incredible, the way he handles her self-depreciating and makes it so she knows she’s not too much - everyone else is just not enough is so beautiful. Your honor, I love him.

And Piper, that woman is so easy to relate to. I saw a lot of myself in her, the self-deprecating - something my husband also has helped me tremendously through, the way she feels the need to be independent so much and handle it all herself that she questions when Scott WANTS to help her and he SEES her. He gives her the acceptance and love that she needed so much all along. I friggin love it all.

And guys, Grateful Bob was back and better than ever. I truly think everyone needs a Grateful Bob in their lives, he’s the best.

Make sure you add this to your summer TBR!

Laugh out loud funny

Here is another excellent offering for contemporary romance fans. This is book two in a series but can be easily read as a stand alone.

I think the thing I enjoyed most about this book is the random yet completely hilarious turns of phrase that are sprinkled liberally through its pages. I kept reading sections to my husband completely out of context to share the laughs. It’s hard to remember this is only the author’s second book.

While it is most certainly laugh out loud funny, there are also some serious issues addressed in the book - primarily self-worth and not meeting parental expectations. They were handled well and sensitively. It is an open door book that doesn’t hold back - whether in time or in spice.

There’s also found family, a dog called Waffles, a safe word for social situations (pickles), a meet-cute involving a bar fight, camping under duress and lots of Pride and Prejudice. I will definitely be reading more of this series and recommend it to all contemporary romance readers

So so grateful to Kim for sending me an ARC of this book!!

Scott and Piper were so adorable!! I enjoyed reading their book so much! The cozy vibes continued from book one in the best way! I loved that Alice and Jake, while not the main characters, got to have a few moments and we got to see them!

I also really enjoyed how much of Greatful Bob we got to see! (He deserves his own book)!

Scott is truly the best short king 👑 he is the epitome of ‘golden retriever guy’ he was constantly so sweet and patient with Piper!

And Piper! I loved her! I really enjoyed seeing her flourish while working at the bookstore! She was just so funny and, at times, frustrating, but all in all a great character!

My only thing that I wish I had more of in this book was a better ending between Piper and her parents, that part just seemed unfinished to me.

"you're not too much, piper," he continues. "they're just not enough."

"you deserve to have somebody make you feel like a star every minute of every damn day."

"he makes me feel like i belong."

thank you to the lovely author kim swizz herself for an e-arc!! i am so excited for the launch event next tuesday🤩
i liked this second book even more than barefoot lake -- made me wish i was by a lake on a hammock reading this instead of my couch😭 i saw so much of piper in myself and related to her insecurities, stubbornness, and her being unkind/harsh to herself to be perfect all the time. i love how scott learns to respect her independence/her finding comfort being in control. he offers help not because she's incapable but because he likes/wants to. i hope i too will have a partner who is just as understanding and patient as scott is, one who earns my trust and doesn't make me feel "less of a person" for accepting help🤍
ALSO! we NEED a real life barefoot bake + literary lake; that bakery/bookstore combination is ingenious. i already am spoiled with lovestruck books in cambridge (cafe+bookstore+wine bar) but i think these bookstore+cafe combinations need to be everywhere🥹

I absolutely loved the cozy vibes I got from here. It’s cozy but summery and all around just really really good vibes. Piper is fun and flawed and relatable- it was easy to see myself in her and get lost in the book. If it wasn’t for work I probably episode finished it in one sitting. That’s just how- incredible the world felt to me. Seeing piper grow and heal from her family and her ex’s was so beautiful and honestly hopeful. Yes it’s fiction but it is possible- healing and growing and recovering is possible. Just takes time and sometimes the perfect man will come along and help. Scott was patient and obsessed with her in all the best ways. It was so fun and just overall a really good time. Definitely a must read for the coming summer months it fits the vibes so so well.

(2.25 ⭐️) Honestly I had a feeling this book wasn’t going to be for me in the beginning, but it was going to be the 30th book I finished this year, so I decided to just stick with it. I’m not angry with it, it makes sense, but there are definitely a lot of aspects I felt could have been better, and they are just unforgivable. For example, I appreciated the journey Piper goes on with her confidence and self view, and the part Scott plays in that, but we got virtually no back story as to how she came to be this way? Her relationship with her parents seemed unrelated, and even that seemed forgotten most of the time. The characters are easy to root for and their relationship is cute, but the book was overall forgettable.

I absolutely ADORED Piper and Scott's story! I knew after the glimpse I got of them in Barefoot Lake I was going to love them, but man oh man love doesn't even begin to cover it! There is just something so uniquely beautiful about the connection Piper and Scott have. The acceptance, respect, understanding, and more between them is truly special. While either are far from perfect, they are perfect for one another. they compliment each other so wonderfully and treat each other as equals. I just freaking adored this book and these two. BRAVO to Kim Swizz!

First of all, I STILL want to live in Wilcox Grove. Growing up in a small New England town, I have to say Kim nailed the vibes on the head, but then added her magic to them. Just when you think you couldn't love the characters in this series more, we delve deeper into meeting Piper and Scott. Piper is one of the most relatable characters I have ever read, and Scott will ruin men for you (in the best ways possible!) If you love cozy, found family, small town vibes...think Gilmore Girls with a little more spice...you NEED to read this series!

I have never related to a book more in my life then I had when I read this.
Piper is equal parts perfect and imperfect. I have the privilege of adding another patient golden retriever boyfriend to my list of book boyfriends. I have found a new home in Wilcox Grove and cannot recommend this book enough. To anyone who has felt like they are too much or felt like life sometimes tries to silence us, this is the perfect novel to learn that you can be 100% yourself and don't need to try to hide any parts of you to those who want to love you unconditionally.

The need to live in Wilcox Grove is so deep. Once again the small town gilmore girls stars hollow vibes have absolutely taken hold of me. I found myself relating to Piper a lot in this story. Always being labeled as loud, dramatic or too much when that’s not the case at all and you just need to find your Scott who can handle everything you have to offer, and love you for who you are… and is the ultimate definition of if he wanted to he would. The perfect read to get out of reality and into the perfect New England town. Kim you have once again done IT!!!

Jake is a perfect book boyfriend. Piper is so beautiful, but her flaws make her so relatable. I fall in love with the town and community of barefoot lake. I feel immersed as I’m reading. The spice be spicing.

I think I like the 2nd book in this series even more than the first! I flew through these pages. I’m sad it’s over!

I think I may have liked this more than Barefoot Lake! Still super cozy but make it summer this time. Scott is the perfect book boyfriend! He's so patient and obsessed with Piper! Piper is dealing with a lot of insecurities from her family and previous boyfriends that I can definitely relate to. I loved seeing her learn to trust not only Scott but the whole town as well.

I was so excited to back in barefoot lake and even more excited that it’s with my favorite character, piper. I loved diving into her and Scott’s worlds more. Kim had me laughing and then crying as she broke me with a few chapters but then picked me right back up at the end. I loved this book so much and was sad when I finished it.
