The California Air Resources Board has extended warranties on repairs related to vehicle emission control to 15 years or 150,000 miles on certain types of vehicles. Because warranty repairs must be done at new-car dealer repair shops, extending warranties may have a negative impact on independent repair shops. The author examines the effects of extending vehicle warranties on the independent repair industry and concludes with recommendations of policies that the California Air Resources Board might consider to reduce the negative impacts on independent repair shop owners.
