The Holy Spirit Wants to Work Through You! Because of division over these controversial questions, many Christians have embraced a major deception about the Holy Spirit—that He is no longer powerfully at work in the world today. Randy Clark has been an eyewitness to the miraculous work of the Holy Spirit and a key participant in watching Him powerfully transform lives across the Earth. This easy-to-read guide equips everyday believers to understand and activate the Spirit’s power in their lives today. The Essential Guide to the Power of the Holy Spirit will help To fulfill your destiny, you must unlock the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. He is God on the Earth and He wants to use you to release His Kingdom today!
Randy Clark is a gift to the body of Christ. He writes from a place of deep revelation, understanding of the scriptures, and experience. I value his perspective on Holy Spirit because he is so thorough in his usage of scriptures while giving space to acknowledge and refute the “other side.” Great book.
This book is, in general, an answer to cessationists. Clark shows that the power and presence of the Holy Spirit is still very active in Christians today. He does a good job of presenting his case. He looks at key figures in Christian history, such as Augustine, Calvin and Edwards. He adds many stories of the gifts active today. I appreciated that he addressed some of the problems with the Charismatic movement. I did feel he was too easy on those who claim to be modern day prophets. While I would not call this a scholarly work, it is well suited for those who are widely read and familiar with theologians, both past and present. If you believe the Word and "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8), then this book will bless you. God is not dead, he is surely alive and you are invited to be a part of what God is doing right now.
Lays out both sides of the argument of whether or not the Holy Spirit is active and here for every individual. Then gives the scriptural foundation for engaging with the Holy Spirit.
Review Title: Discerning Truth About Holy Spirit Power (review of The Essential Guide to the Power of the Holy Spirit by Randy Clark) Reviewer: Janice S. Garey ***** 5 Stars
This book engages readers in the current discussion about whether the Holy Spirit acts similarly today as in Bible times or if the Holy Spirit functions only as the agent who draws people to God for salvation. Randy Clark, PhD, has an excellent background to write on this topic.
Cessationists believe that the miracles and healings recorded in the Bible were necessary for people to come to faith in Jesus before a written record was made to tell about what Jesus could and did do that proved He was the Son of God and the Messiah. After God inspired and provided the Bible, they feel the works of the Holy Spirit including miracles, healings, speaking in tongues and others ceased. Scripture became the focus for understanding leading to salvation.
Continuationists believe that the same works are performed by the Holy Spirit today as were performed back in Bible times. The author, Randy Clark, gives good reasons to support his stance for this side of the argument.
The book will be enlightening to all who read it no matter which side they support. The reader will benefit from the study of the Holy Spirit based on scripture passages. Different parts of scripture have been evaluated by Randy Clark to discern what they mean regarding Holy Spirit power at work in the world today.
Chapters particularly of interest to those unfamiliar with the Charismatic movement are: Chapter 4: Prophets and Prophecy Today Chapter 5: Modern Apostles Chapter 6: Is Speaking in Tongues for Today? Chapter 7: Does God Still Heal the Sick? The final portion of the book looks at the writings of Jonathan Edwards and how he addressed The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Holy Spirit. All of the thoughts are presented logically for readers to think about and come to their own conclusions. At the end of each chapter, a summary of the Keypoints helps reinforce the readings and understanding.
I thank the author, publisher, and bookfun.org for giving me this book in exchange for reading it and giving my honest review.
"One key way that Jesus is exalted or glorified is through the working of the gifts of the Holy Spirit." (Randy Clark, The Essential Guide to the Power of the Holy Spirit: God's Miraculous Gifts at Work Today, Page 129)
Cessationism vs. Continuationism. That is what this work is about.
The above terms look scary at first, but they basically mean:
*Cessationism = Gifts of the Holy Spirit ceased; and *Continuationism = Gifts of the Holy Spirit continued.
That is the argument throughout this work. I am on the side of continuationism and Randy Clark presents many good arguments using the Word of God to support this doctrine.
I thought the title of this book was a little misleading. I thought this book was going to be a book on the Holy Spirit and the work of the Holy Spirit, which includes the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It turned out to be a highly academic book about the argument mentioned above. No practically whatsoever in my opinion. It tries to convince the cessationist that their doctrine is wrong and the continuation doctrine is right. I think this is a much needed book, but maybe more for the scholar. This book is definitely not for the baby Christian. It is more a book for a maturer Christian and theologian. The terms and arguments can be difficult at times to read. Be sure to read this book with a dictionary close by.
I think the author makes a good argument why the gifts of the Holy Spirit did not cease. As Christians we are called to be like Christ. What did Christ do while He was on earth? He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil (See Acts 10:38). And He commanded us, his disciples, to do the same works. This includes operating in the power of the Holy Spirit through signs and wonders. Signs and wonders bring glory to God and confirm the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ (See Mark 16:20).
I absolutely love reading books about the Holy Spirit and this book was wonderful! I love learning more about my Father and the Trinity and Randy Clark taught me even more, furthering my education in a way that spoke to my soul. This book is great as a supplement to my normal quiettime (the way I used it) or wonderful to use as a couples devotional or with a friend or in a Bible study or book club. It’s very versatile. This is a book that will stay in my library - I will be happy to lend it out but will want to read it more than once as I think it will continue to speak to me each time I pick it up.
I received this book for free from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest review. I have posted my review on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Goodreads, and Deeper Shopping.
Author Randy Clark does a great job of defending his belief that the Holy Spirit is still present in all Christians today and he supports his belief with Bible scripture. This is a valuable resource for those of us who are striving to learn more about God and the Trinity and I think that, while it can be used as a devotional for one person, it would also be a great addition to my weekly Bible Study at church. I recommend this to all who are hoping to deepen their understanding of God and the working and power of the Holy Spirit!
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher through TBCN/BookFun in exchange for my honest review.
