Five Short Stories. Short psychological thrillers and paranormal fiction. Ideal if you're looking for a quick read. Behind The Lens Before midnight The Thorn of Awakening The Haunting of Eleanor Look Closer
Now Do You See? by Kim Evans is a collection of five psychological thriller/paranormal short stories. This collection made for a good seasonal read—dark without being overly creepy and perfect when you are short on time since it can be read in one sitting. This was my first time reading this author, and it definitely made me curious to try one of her full-length novels.
1. Behind the Lens - 3.5 ⭐️ 2. Before Midnight - 4 ⭐️ and my favorite of the bunch. 3. The Thorn of Awakening - 2 ⭐️ 4. The Haunting of Eleanor - 3.5 ⭐️ 5. Look Closer - 3 ⭐️
An overall rating of 3 stars from me for short stories is still a solid one. A short story really has to grab my attention to earn a higher rating, especially when there’s less time for deeper story or character development.
If you like the TV show Beyond Belief Fact Or Fiction, you are going to like this one! This book is an anthology of five spooky and paranormal short stories that l've really enjoyed reading. I read it in an hour and a half!
Behind The Lens A young florist named Rose disappears from her house one night. Whatever happened to Rose? There's an unexpected twist at the end.
Before Midnight A couple buys a very old abandoned house. It’s still filled with old furniture and personal belongings left behind by the last owners who were a young couple who died there. Rumours are that the wife was killed by the husband while sitting in the rocking chair in the bedroom, then he hung himself. The new couple are in the house a week and are hearing the chair rocking and creaking on it's own in the next bedroom every night at a quarter to twelve. They decide to go in that bedroom at a quarter to twelve to see what happens... This story gave me chills!
The Thorn Of Awakening It was dinner time and a young couple decided to get pizza for dinner. So the wife got into her car and while driving had an accident. For five days her body was lying comatose at the local hospital, but her soul was back at home watching her husband who could not see her, while she could see and hear everything that was happening in and around the house...
The Haunting Of Eleanor Eleanor is a ghost haunting her old house that is now occupied by a serial killer. But are things what they seem?
Look Closer A woman hires a private investigator to investigate an old boyfriend, but there's more to it...
If you like short dark stories in an overall short book, this is for you.
There are five dark stories in this collection, I found all of them really enjoyable and entertaining. My favourite bit was that it felt like there were two stories in each: what you think it's about and what it's actually about. Some very clever twists! I assume that's why the author chose the name for the collection. Each time I finished, I was thinking, "oooh I see!!" hehe
Behind the Lens: Don't trust everyone you meet!
Before Midnight: My favourite! Creak creak!
The Thorn of Awakening: The way I gasped! I felt betrayed!
The Haunting of Eleanor: Dear Eleanor, you go girl!
Look Closer: That ending!!
Again, if you like short, dark and kinda thoughtful in some places ... then this is a great collection to add to your TBR!
An amazing anthology, including Thriller & Paranormal stories!
I absolutely LOVED the all of these stories and I was hooked from the first sentence. I read this is one sitting & I would definitely recommend this book for the spooky season!
Also, I spy The Haunting Of Eleanor easter egg 😍🤭🤭🤭🤭
Now Do You See? is a collection of five short stories from author and poet Kim Evans. Most books open with a dramatic event, similar to the opening scene in a movie. Less often, a book opens with an innocent scene that nevertheless gets under readers’ skin and compels them to keep turning pages. This second type of opener is infinitely more difficult to pull off, so when I find it, I know I am in the hands of a capable author. Evans is one of the best. She mixes the metaphysical with the mundane, and the result is a blend to savor. Each story in this collection packs enough creativity that I could easily imagine it becoming a full-length novel, but the entire book is short enough to finish in a couple hours. It’s the perfect choice when life is hectic.
REVIEWS: FIVE SHORT STORIES: FIVE SHORT REVIEWS: 📸 Behind The Lens: Oh my, I wish I could have saved Rose! We all need a friend like her! - Something that went through my brain: ‘At least her body will be a good fertiliser for the Roses’. - I did have to re-read this story to really make sense of it, but once I did I enjoyed it.
🕛 Before Midnight: This was my favourite out of the five! - I feel as though now the mum is in peace as she has been able to tell her story! This story is definitely the type I like.
🌹The Thorn Of Awakening: This really made me think: always be true to yourself, and only make time for yourself & the ones that pay you the most attention. It has made me wonder… what do people hear when they are in comas?
🪞 The Haunting of Eleanor: The answer to the question at the end of this story… YES. I’ll remember Eleanor! This story had a mega twist towards the end, one I didn’t actually predict until the very last minute! This was certainly a good read!
Look Closer: 🔍 Umm… I’m really not too sure what to make of this one.. (sorry)
All in all: What a fantastic little book! The author @kim.evanswrites had a way of captivating my thoughts from the first story. This book was really worth reading! I definitely think 2025 will be filled with more short stories as I enjoyed this book.
Now Do You See? By Kim Evans– is a collection of five dark, twisted tales that had me saying, 'Oh… NOW I see!' after every twist. All five stories were unique and had a moral to them. My favourites were "The Haunting of Eleanor", "Look Closer", "Before Midnight".
If you love suspense, eerie twists, and stories that linger in your mind, Kim Evans’ books are definitely worth checking out!
