When I was growing up, we always had two Thomas Hart Benton lithographs hanging over the fireplace. To me they vividly represented the small town America of an earlier time. In THE LITHOGRAPHS OF THOMAS HART BENTON, Creekmore Fath has assembled 92 lithographs done between 1929 and 1974. The Introduction is highly engaging, in part because Fath knew Benton and the members of his circle personally, and the description of each piece is brief but well considered. In addition, Fath has added a copy of Benton’s handwritten comments on each piece, thereby making our experience of the art more immediate. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Thomas Hart Benton or American Regionalism.
I have been researching Thomas Hart Benton of a project in my Modern Art course. This book was helpful, concise, and engaging. I am so interested in people who are not “art historians”, but compile books or information about specific artist just because they are compelled by their work.
