In these three fairy tales inspired by Puerto Rican legends, a coqui must outsmart all the bigger animals; a faithful dog haunts the beaches, waiting for its drowned master to return from the sea; and a young boy is miraculously saved from death.
I have always loved tales from different parts of the world. These tales of legend give insight into the land, people and beliefs. There is something almost magical about them that gives you a connection especially if you have been there.
These three tales of Puerto Rico are such tales although I would stop short of calling them fairy tales. The first one is about the coqui, a small frog, and how he won the gift of song for all the coqui. The second one is the story of a faithful dog waiting for the return of his man friend. The last is story of an infamous bittersweet horse race on Cristo Street in San Juan. These stories flow well and draw you in regardless of your age. I would be amiss if I didn’t mention that the illustrations bring these stories to life. Together they are beguiling with a touch of fact and “whimsy” that will melt the hearts of young and old alike.
My mistake is only reading the title. I actually thought this was a book of Puerto Rican fairy tales. Now, I see the description says "three fairy tales inspired by Puerto Rican legends" which means they are legends not fairy tales.
