I'll be the first to admit that romance novels aren't my typical reading genre, but I do still love a good romance story. What's sad about this novel is that there is a certain degree of potential here for a decent story, but the execution falls completely flat. It is clear from the first chapter that this book never passed through the hands of an editor. The first spelling error occurs in the acknowledgements, and there are grammatical and vocabulary errors throughout the book which always pull me right out of the story. Because this is a debut and the author is clearly not a native English speaker, I'm more forgiving towards language errors. What is harder to forgive is the pacing. More than once does a chapter end in the vein of "Goodbye abusive boyfriend. We are done", only for the next chapter to begin with "I got a call from my boyfriend. 'Hi babe, I love you!'". Clearly something happened in between that has been completely glossed over, and we will never know what it was! The other extreme also occurs where we spend an entire page ordering a meal at a restaurant, adding no substance to the characters or story. Other frustrating writing errors include multiple instances where the perspective jumps mid-sentence (I went to my favorite spot since I was little to think. "I don't know what to do." She said.), and I couldn't help but notice that the main love interest's name changed in spelling for the final few chapters.
As i mentioned, there is potential for a decent story here... if it weren't for the unlikable characters. The main character, Athena, seems to always come away from any situation morally superior, even when her actions are questionable at best. The supporting characters are all either very good people, or very bad people. There seems to be no middle ground, and they can shift from one extreme to the other in the space of one page. The story that the characters go through seems to go on in circles for a while, showing a little growth by the end of the journey, which is very sudden and doesn't feel like much of an ending at all. Though, again, this is not my usual genre, so maybe this is how these stories are supposed to "end".
In summary, it feels like this book was written, never looked at again and published by someone who didn't bother reading the manuscript. It was difficult to get through and I honestly cannot recommend it to anyone, not even fans of the genre.
