Rebecca Heiss, Ph.D., has dedicated her life to understanding why we behave in the bizarre, unproductive, and potentially damaging ways we do. An evolutionary biologist specializing in stress, Dr. Heiss is a professional speaker whose clients have included Lockheed Martin, SHRM, Charles Schwab, ADP, Vistage, and more. A former professor, Rebecca's research was designated “transformative” by the National Science Foundation. She was a founding member of NEXT High School, an impact-based learning charter school. Heiss is CEO of icueity, LLC, a 360-review mobile application providing users with continuous feedback for leadership development. She lives in Greenville, South Carolina with her spoiled rotten dog named Guinness, and every day tries to live her life motto: “spread happy.”
My book club was fortunate to read and discuss an advanced copy of this book. Even though Dr. Heiss writes and speaks mostly to business groups, we found that her stories and her techniques were helpful to us in our everyday lives. We've commented to each other over the last few weeks about how we have reframed our stress using what we learned in this book. As one club member said, "I wish I'd read this book 40 years ago!" Dr. Heiss helps readers to see stress in a new light and to harness and transform it with a new trajectory to reach achievable goals.
I got an advance copy of this book after hearing the author speak at our national sales meeting. It’s based in the real world and has changed my perspective on stress and adversity.
Highly recommend this book to anyone looking to change their relationship with stress.
I got this book after a friend saw the author at a conference on corporate leadership. He said that within 45 min, Dr. Heiss was able to reframe stress for him in a way that took it from something he had to battle to something he could use intentionally. He talked about her ideas, but couldn’t explain the process. This book did - simply and powerfully. I love the way the book explains stress—psychologically and physiologically—and not only makes it okay to have stress, but also shows you how to immediately turn any type of stress into a very powerful tool. The writing is smart, the book is quick, and the unique page design is great for people with focus issues like me (and probably the rest of America). I wish I had it when I was younger—but I’m glad I have it right now. 10/10 recommend.
Looked for the book for some insights on stress, in general. I think it offers lots of great insight in the beginning, setting definitions for stress and for the emotional life, or mentioning studies of what kind of type of organizational interventions help or not with stress (only the ones that .
It feels, for me, more like a workbook to self-reflection (which is great and needed), and that seemed too broad, as way to investigate your general emotional life and your life history. It seemed to me as the stress narrative is an invitation to get you to emotional literacy, which was not my expectation when grabbing the book.
Totally recommend it if you want to get started in a practical way in self-knowledge. If you are looking to learn more about stress, I would read her references for the first chapter.
Stress Has a Bad Rep. Springboard Sets It Straight!
I’m currently reading this with my team, and it’s been a game-changer for how we think about stress. This book flips the script on everything we’ve been taught. Stress is NOT our enemy! In fact, it might be the edge we’ve been looking for.
Dr. Heiss conveys that stress doesn’t kill us. It’s the belief that stress is harmful that can actually do the damage. That idea alone has sparked some powerful conversations in our group. We’re exploring how to reframe stress as a signal of growth, challenge, and opportunity rather than something to avoid.
I highly recommend this read if you’re ready to challenge your assumptions and unlock a new level of potential!
"We deserve a better relationship with stress than what the wellness industry has been offering."
This one sentence from Springboard: Transform Stress to Work for You perfectly captures a massive problem; one that affects nearly everyone, certainly including me. And then the book provides a new viewpoint, approach and path to improve ones relationship with it.
This is a fabulous book. Beautifully written, thought-provoking, and a genuine joy to read. Rebecca Heiss feels like a coach, a mentor, even a trusted friend, sharing her deep expertise (and personal experiences) on a subject we all wrestle with daily. Stress.
What I found especially refreshing is the honesty.
Right up front, she writes:
“You, my reader, will not feel less stressful after reading this book…”
Then quickly follows it with this:
“…but what I can promise…you will develop a new relationship with stress…molded and shaped for your own utility.”
That’s exactly what the book delivers.
I especially appreciated the hands-on tools and engaging exercises like the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) score as well as many additional resources made interactive through QR codes. It provides exploration well beyond the book itself.
Another fun aspect is the book’s creative layout and design. Much of the formatting is playful and purposeful, highlighting key points and action steps in a way that makes them memorable and actually makes you want to act on them. It’s no exaggeration when I say it helps you “spring” into action. (sorry couldn’t help the poor pun) LOL.
Ultimately, I loved how this book flipped the narrative on stress. It opened my eyes to how stress, when understood and directed, can be a powerful advantage. Springboard helped me reframe how I approach pressure and stress in my daily life.
I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their relationship with stress which, is probably all of us.
disclosure: I was provided with an ARC and I will be buying copies for a number of friends and family who will truly benefit from this book when it releases.
