I want to be clear - two stars is not a reflection of the quality of writing and instead a reflection of my personal taste.
The book was well written, well researched, and very academic. You could tell when reading the amount of passion the writer and the people involved had, not only for the Matildas but for women.
Unfortunately, I assumed this book would be more of a 'behind the scenes' and would include more stories of the players, coaches, and supporting staff. However, it was instead a historical play by play, filled with references and the names of chairpeople/owners/journalists I've never heard of.
I am a massive fan of the Matildas and can confidently say I know so much more about their journey as a brand, but I think the style of writing is not something I will find myself reaching for again.
I picked up Rise of the Matildas because I’m a big fan of women’s football and wanted to learn more about the journey of the team. The book definitely gave me a lot of insight into the struggles and triumphs the players have faced over the years, and I appreciated how much research clearly went into it. Some of the personal stories about the players were inspiring and reminded me why I fell in love with the Matildas in the first place.
That said, I found parts of it a bit dense and more historical than I was expecting. At times, it felt more like a record of events than a narrative that truly engaged me. I was hoping for a little more behind-the-scenes detail and emotional depth about the players’ journeys.
