After serving four years in the army, he worked at various jobs and earned a BA from Empire State College. He wrote full time after 1977.

Walter wrote from childhood, first finding success in 1969 when he won the Council on Interracial Books for Children contest, which resulted in the publication of his first book for children, Where Does the Day Go?, by Parent's Magazine Press. He published over seventy books for children and young adults. He received many awards for his work in this field including the Coretta Scott King Award, five times. As shadows lengthen, and it's time to head home for the evening, the gathered children speculate as to what happens to the day. (My favorite was the first girl's theory that it breaks into little pieces, and the little bits of daylight that show through are the stars.) Dad sets everyone straight at the end of the book. This is a nice Parent's Magazine offering that I missed out on during my childhood. With lovely, mellow illustrations by Leo Carty.
