Christ's Glorious Achievements

Rate this book
Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a man captivated, comforted, and revolutionised by Christ: here you'll see why. He brings home what it means for the believer that Christ is the End of the law, the Conqueror of Satan, the Overcomer of the world, the Maker of all things new, the Spoiler of principalities and powers, the Destroyer of death, and the Seeker and Saviour of the lost.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.

This sermon series is full of Spurgeon's classic zeal and love for Christ. The book contains a look at what Christ achieved on Earth from various different angles. It is both challenging and comforting as Spurgeon moves seamlessly from sound Biblical exegesis to practical application and on to a fierce evangelical message.

To those wishing to delve deeper into the works and accomplishments of Christ will find this book enriching, insightful, and invigorating; full of language that showed how much the author cherished his Saviour.

I love the way Spurgeon is able to break down a text and use other texts in support of his explanation. Another book written by him that has helped me grow in knowledge of who God is and the realities of what He has accomplished through Jesus!

“The law kills, the gospel makes alive; the law strips and then Jesus Christ comes in and robes the soul in beauty and glory.”

“Beloved, each one of you has now become part of one new man… The mystical body of Christ is the one new man, and we are members of that body. Henceforth, we have communion with all saints and to us ‘there is neither Greek nor Jew, bond nor free, but Christ is all in all’.”

“…but we were spiritually lost, so as to need both saving and seeking too… we are by nature lost, so that nothing but seeking and saving together will be of any service to us.”

I really enjoyed this! I think it was a little much to try to read it as a normal book and would have been easier to digest if I sat down trying to only read one sermon at a time. Spurgeon does an excellent job showing the glorious work of Christ. A book full of great and encouraging reminders about who Jesus is!

it is not surprising that Spurgeon was the "prince of preachers". His explanation and understanding of what Christ has accomplished for us is breathtaking. It is evident that he read voraciously and that his vocabulary served him well as he waxes eloquent on spiritual mysteries, making them real and astounding the reader with his thoughts, drawing the reader closer to Christ.

Great read

I really enjoyed it. The chapters are each a sermon, which makes them somewhat short but it's Spurgeon, so you know it's deep. Highly recommend every pastor have this in their library.

“There are, perhaps, no sermons like the deaths which have happened in our households; the departures of our beloved friends have been to us solemn discourses of divine wisdom, which our heart could not help hearing. So Christ has spared death to make him a preacher to his saints.”, p. 161

One of the most powerful collection of sermons I've ever read. Incredibly beautiful and well-written. A perfect introduction to Spurgeon's theology and teaching.

I think that if I could only read one author for the rest of my life, outside of the Bible, I would choose Spurgeon. This particular work is prime Spurgeon, exalting and magnifying the work of Christ with his trademark poetic and eloquent language. He focuses on seven specific “achievements” of Christ, including for example “the making of all things new” or “the conquering of Satan.” More than a couple chapters were probably the best treatments of their topics I’ve ever heard or read. This book deepened my love for Jesus and I imagine I will return to it often.

7 great sermons focusing on the person and work of Christ. These are great introductions into some of Spurgeon’s preaching. They display his zeal for Christ and Him crucified, which was exemplified through so much of Spurgeon’s ministry.

It was a good read. It inspired me to pray for rich people because it really reminded me how lost they truly are and how hardened they are to Christ.
