Will Voodoo's team succeed? Or has his luck finally run out?
J.L. Hancock spent twenty years in the military where he toiled away in the dark corners of the government intelligence communities, learned Korean and Japanese, and conducted over one hundred combat operations with special operations forces in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Philippines. As the senior enlisted advisor over future concepts and innovation for the Navy special operations community Hancock became a well-known subject matter expert in unmanned systems, 5G, and artificial intelligence. Drawing from a graduate level education in national security studies, foreign language expertise, and experience as a technician embedded with special operations forces, J.L. Hancock writes fiction that reflects the complexities of the modern world. He’s inspired by the many lives he has lived, the worlds he has seen, and the people he’s met along the way. Today, he lives in San Diego, CA with his wife and two daughters.
In a landscape flooded with military thrillers, JL Hancock’s "The Spear and the Sentinel" emerges as a standout triumph, captivating from the very first page. As the second book in the series, Hancock takes readers on another thrilling journey filled with pulse-pounding action and a deep dive into the intricate tapestry of human emotion, elevating this novel far above the typical genre fare.
A standout feature of "The Spear and the Sentinel" is its thoughtful examination of technology in modern warfare. Hancock tackles this complex theme with intelligence and nuance, steering clear of the clichéd and absurd tropes that often plague similar narratives. Instead, he presents a sophisticated exploration of how technology shapes the battlefield and influences the mindset of those who serve. This respectful approach not only enriches the narrative but also engages readers in a deeper conversation about the ethical implications of warfare in our technologically driven world.
Hancock’s writing style is truly refreshing. His prose flows with a lyrical quality, vividly painting scenes that immerse readers in the action while providing moments for introspection. The dialogue is sharp and authentic, with layered interactions that elevate the story and keep readers invested in Voodoo.
"The Spear and the Sentinel" is more than just a book; it’s an experience that resonates long after the final page is turned. Hancock's unique blend of suspense, character development, and thoughtful themes truly redefines what a military thriller can be. For readers in search of a gripping story that challenges the mind and stirs the heart, this novel is a must-read. Hats off to JL Hancock for crafting a remarkable piece that invites readers to think deeply while delivering a thrilling ride!
Voodoo and his elite team are back, faced with another mission that takes them across the globe in a race against time.
I read this straight after the first book so I felt like it was continuation of a huge adventure or like watching the next season of your favourite tv show right after the last one ended.
I felt like it paralleled our present day or in our not too distant future in regard to AI warfare, it’s quite scary really.
You’ll love voodoo and his team and all the characters that they come across, some will make you laugh and others will make you nearly cry when you learn about their past.
Fans of edge of your seat, military thrillers will love this whole series.
Each book in the series can be read as a standalone.
Review: This was a tough bag of nutz to get through. The writing is good where it rides the worlds stage but something was off. Personally, I thought this lacked good scene development which would have bridged the gap between the characters and the movement. The result is this definitive lack of characterization. The tension the author tries to build in every instance falls a bit short as you never developed any connection to the vast array of characters.
Jumping rapidly from scene to scene without an over-view of WHY (objective) they are doing what they are doing, was a big miss. Perhaps it was a given and I failed to recognize it. Was it a slow reveal? I still rated this, although I DNF.
The Spear and the Sentinel by J. L. Hancock. The Voodoo Series Book 2. I did enjoy this book. I loved the cover. The soldier who looks part computer. It's what drew me to sign up. I'm starting to like voodoo. I read this book in two sittings. I couldn't put it down. This was cleverly written. I loved the writing style and the story. This was like a mini movie in my head. I was rooting for voodoo all through the book. I do hope there is more to come. I definitely recommend this series.
I recently had the opportunity to read a copy of "The Spear and the Sentinel" in return for providing an honest review. I would like to thank the author (J.L Hancock), his publisher (Braveship Books), and the fine folks at Net Galley.
This book is a strong addition to the ever-increasing number of books that use merging changes rooted in rapidly evolving technology related to the A. I. revolution and more traditional action/adventure as the basis for its storyline.
In the stunning sequel to The Hawk Enigma, Voodoo and his team of special operators are thrust back into the heart of a global conflict. Set against the vast steppes of Kazakhstan, this story unfolds in the shadow of the former Soviet Union. Tensions rise as Voodoo’s team embarks on a covert mission. In Hancock’s thriller, a covert, military-trained American team fights to shut down an AI-related project brewing in Central Asia.
War veteran and widower “Voodoo” leads a group of hackers and “wrench-turners” for the United States Naval Special Warfare unit at the Directorate in San Diego. His skills earned him a spot in a rescue operation the previous year in Japan (Hawk Enigma); now, the CIA station chief in Japan wants the same team for a mission in Central Asia, which, like the previous op, has ties to an escalating artificial intelligence Cold War. That’s not the only connection—the God Algorithm, a powerful AI that Voodoo and the others learned about last year, may still be trouble. For their newest assignment, the team must first recover an asset named Kobra Siddik, who, after escaping a reeducation camp in China, rushes to make it across the border to Kazakhstan. She has intel Voodoo’s team needs, but she will only supply it if the team helps her get someone else out of the camp. Do the Chinese have the God Algorithm? And for what diabolical purpose will they use the AI? In any case, soldiers (courtesy of China’s Ministry of State Security) are gunning for Kobra as well as Voodoo, and such team members as the burly, taciturn Stu Slater and Voodoo’s redheaded directorate co-worker Sparks. The team’s ultimate goal is thwarting “this AI network” that seems to be gathering force. But that’s easier planned than done, as protests devolve into riots that upset the Kazakh city of Almaty, surprising villains crop up, and double-crossings throw everything into disarray.
Hancock packs this brisk thriller with rousing action scenes and intriguing ideas (a scientist makes a specific type of diamond whose value isn’t monetary; China uses a “predictive algorithm” that warns officials of the enigmatic “Sentinel” that will trigger insurgency). The narrative’s complex concepts are made abundantly clear via the action or characters’ discourse. That’s also true for the military and tech terminology, in addition to a veritable alphabet soup of acronyms for various organizations and shorthand communications (RTB: Return To Base). The novel entertainingly delivers action as the team skydives, goes undercover, and finds itself engaged in frenzied gunfights and pursuits. They also employ impressive technology, the highlight being four-legged, heavily armed robotic machines that the team can access remotely. Best of all, the author meticulously develops the cast: Voodoo shares a tension with team member Mason Gallegos that harkens back to their tour in Afghanistan, and there are memorable individuals throughout, including the resilient Kobra, who comes with a tragic backstory; the ever-inquisitive Inspector Chen Wei; and the highly-skilled CIA operative Sasha Zhakupova. This sophomore series installment seamlessly connects to the preceding book—new readers will easily follow along, but may want to check out the series opener to avoid spoilers. A taut and exhilarating techno-thriller.
Hancock, in my opinion, gives the reader a great thrilling tech adventure. With well-developed characters, an intriguing environment, and an engaging writing style, this book is a gem in the military-thriller genre.
What I liked most about the book is its mixture of mystery, thrill, and unexpected plot twists, which makes it stand out in the sci-fi and military thriller genres. The plot twists, each more surprising than the last, immediately grab the reader’s attention and keep them hooked until the end. Moreover, if you are a tech lover and craving a thrilling story, this book is a must-read. The environment takes the reader to a world of imagination full of futuristic technology and complex algorithms. The writer has created a great imaginative setting that captivates the imagination and forces the reader to sink deep into the story.
J.L. Hancock’s writing style is efficient and delightful. The flow of the story creates a deep emotional connection between readers and the characters. The exploration of love, hope, and bravery creates a thought-provoking experience for the readers.
On my self-imposed five-star scale, I would give this book a solid four stars with my only issues being that (1) it was Book #2 in the author's "Voodoo" series, and therein lies one of my problems with it. I confess that I had not read book 1, and I have a strong sense that had I approached the series in sequence I might have found it more approachable, and (2) the version that I had received from Net Galley Book Shelf had a smaller font size than what I was normally used to.
That said, I would provide a strong recommendation for aficionados of the military thriller genre. Fans of Jack Ryan, Tom Clancy, and Clive Cussler will snatch this thriller and refuse to let go.
As with most of my literary ramblings, these are just a few of my thoughts.
Here is my review for The Spear And The Sentinel by J L Hancock
I absolutely loved this intriguing military techno thriller involving Voodoo and his team which gripped me right from the start of the book. The story starts with a woman escaping from captivity after killing her captor. She is then chased by the police but luckily saved at the last moment. Voodoo and his team are seconded to go on a covert mission but new team members bring more troubles from Voodoo’s past as they return to haunt his present day life. China’s Belt and Road Initiative pushes ahead into Central Asia and it exposes a secret lab advancing AI warfare. This book is a superb follow up to The Hawk Enigma and there’s a lot of twists and turns involved. It’s set in various places and each chapter tells you where it’s set. The story is brilliantly written and thought out. It’s been well planned and the story is very inventive. The characters have true realization and appear to be real people written in great detail. The story is very descriptive and everything is described in great detail. The author is very knowledgeable in artificial intelligence and military technical warfare as he used to work in the military for a lot of years and covered a lot of areas. I like the author’s writing style and I found it very easy to get into. I got so hooked on this story that I found I couldn’t put the book down as I needed to know what happened next. This series is growing on me and I can’t wait to read the next book.

Will Voodoo’s team succeed? Or has his luck finally run out?
Reviewed by Ian Banks for Bluewolf Reviews and Literally PR The Spear and the Sentential from JL Hancock sees Voodoo and the team back in action after almost a year of living a normal life, or what passes for normal, in the follow on from their last assignment as detailed in The Hawk Enigma. Unfortunately, the ‘God Algorithm’ was not recovered and while everything appears to have been quite this is not the case. The Chinese have been stealthily going about tracking down the Scientists responsible for the development of the Algorithm to retrieve data from the brain of murdered Scientist. To a point they have succeeded but it is only when it becomes apparent that they are going to use this to control public thought, capture intent before it becomes a reality and replace all thought globally with A.I are Voodoo, and the Team called into try and once again recover the Algorithm. The CIA Japanese office also wants Kobra Siddik retrieved from a Chinese re-education camp before anything else is undertaken. She has information they want and need but she has her own agenda which she intends to conduct before she cooperates with Voodoo and the CIA. But this time things are vastly different as the Team is not as bonded as they once were, with fractions beginning to appear and old scores once again possibly compromising the mission. Can they achieve what is so desperately needed or will they fail spectacularly as Voodoo comes under unexpected pressure from within the ranks and absolutely nothing is as it appears, constantly changing and reforming in another complex situation. Set against the soaring and spectacular mountains of Kazakhstan The Spear and the Sentinel delivers another fast paced, absolutely riveting Tecno-thriller that could be considered as prescient when you reflect the current situation with AI development and the lack of any governing, or moral boundaries. Once again, a slew of Military terminology has been used to set the scene for an exhilarating ride in the world of counter espionage. Will there be a further challenge for Voodoo and the Team, only time will tell!
"The Spear and the Sentinel," by J.L. Hancock, and published by Braveship Books, is an addition to the avalanche of recent fiction merging changes rooted in rapidly evolving technology related to the A. I. revolution and more traditional action/adventure. It is Book #2 in the author's "Voodoo" series, and therein lies one of my problems with it. I confess that I have not read book 1, and I have a strong sense that had I approached the series in sequence I might have found it more approachable. Candidly, I lean towards technofiction, but the latest iterations, with their greatly increased dependence on IT and AI for plot lines frequently leave me shaking my head. I thank the publisher for kindly providing me with the ARC that I am working from, but I am afraid the tale, as a narrative, quickly overpowered my meager claims to expertise in computer science, and often seemed more chaotic to me than it should have. I suspect that some of this is a function of my advanced years and the biases I have acquired in a long career in academia looking at this type of fiction. Nonetheless, there is merit here although I found it far from convincing, particularly in its action sequences as well as the articulation of central drivers of the narrative. If you have a strong background technically and are really not in it for the action, this may well appeal to you, but I am afraid it just did not rise to the level I was looking for as an "action" novel. My advice to would be readers is to read the series in sequence and try to keep an open mind about ;your expectations in action/adventure fiction.
" [...] God does not play dice with the universe. [...]"
This was my second encounter with the characters from the "Voodoo" series. It was exciting, dark, dangerous, and at times bloody. Blood flowed freely. There were fights for survival and mental battles. J.L. Hancock meticulously crafted his book, "The Spear and the Sentinel." You don't read this book, you literally devour it.
You'll meet, among others:
Kobra - a woman with a mission. She was a prisoner of a poultry trader. Until... She's worth a closer look.
Voodoo - a technology expert. He spent twenty years in Naval Special Warfare. He led a team of hackers, among other roles. He's ready to help anyone in need. Will he be able to outsmart his enemies this time?
Lieutenant Eric "Frisco" Francisco. In my opinion, she deserves respect. Liu Ying – known as the Matriarch – is the Leader of the All-China Federation of Returning Overseas Chinese. Of course, there are more heroes and villains, but you'll discover that for yourself as you read. A gripping plot, gripping action, and diverse characters make this thriller a must-read. All AI fans should not miss this title. I hope we'll hear more about Voodoo and his crew someday. I'm delighted with the cover, which holds many secrets. Are you ready to discover them all?
P.S. Be careful! Not everyone here is shooting for the same target. Beware of scammers!
This story is packed full of more action and technology than a Mission: Impossible movie.
China has a secret AI lab, dedicated to advancing AI warfare. They have gotten their hands on the God Algorithm code, and are stopping at nothing in order to get the key to operate it.
Following the team's success last year in Japan, the CIA station chief in Japan wants the team on the mission in Central Asia, to control the escalating AI Cold War. First, the team must recover an asset called Kobra Siddik, who has escaped a reeducation camp in China with intel that they will need. She has made it to the border at Kazakhastan, but the Chinese Ministry of State Security are hot on her heels. The team have to try and work together in unfamiliar territory, remain undetected, and succeed. However, with the team falling apart from the inside, how successful can they be?
The Chinese using a predictive algorithm to warn officials of potential insurgency is scary, and if the God Algorithm was to be paired with this, the outcome would be clear. Total world control. There are concepts like this woven throughout, along with other technology which does exist, but the story has greatly enhanced (I hope - robot dogs are not that advanced yet are they?), and taken concepts which one may have heard of in passing, elaborates on them, and makes you really wonder. All while wrapping it all in layers of tension and action.
We are introduced to new characters, notably Kobra and her desperate search for her mother. Voodoo’s old Afghanistan marine colleague Mason who joins the team with unexpected consequences. I would recommend reading the first book so you have a good understanding of the current cast and the dynamics, as it will give a better picture of how they work together, and why the team is so good at what they do.
This is another thrilling instalment in the Voodoo series. Hancock has created another thrilling technological whirlwind of an adventure that takes you into a dark and scary and possibly not-so-future world, but does so in an exciting, well-written and entertaining manner. Roll on the next instalment in the series!
An action packed follow-up to the first Voodoo book. From start to finish there is danger and trouble around every corner. And it is followed up with the wit, expertise, and outside the box thinking that Voodoo and his team have become known for. Strap in for a wild ride! J.L. Hancock has clearly done his homework, excellent description of both setting and crazy AI tech pulls the reader in. And it does not let you go. Each page read urges the reader onto the next and then the next until the story finishes. AI can be so intimidating and hard to understand but it flows easily into the story making it entertaining and thought provoking. The days covered in the book feel longer because of the way the reader is engaged with the team, made a part of it all. Add in the dark humor and wit this team has already become known for and the pulse pounding danger is balanced off wonderfully. With an eye for detail and the ability to rachet up the danger and adrenaline, J.L. Hancock uses words to paint an amazing story. Grab the edge of your seat and be prepared to stay there for the length of the book. You will want to know how it ends as soon as you start. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
J. L. Hancock has delivered an outstanding sequel with The Spear and the Sentinel, following his previous work, The Hawk Enigma. The fast-paced thriller continues the exploits of Voodoo and his courageous special operations compatriots in their mission to uncover secrets in the sinister world of advanced artificial intelligence (AI). The team is tasked with a covert assignment deep in the heart of Kazakhstan with little to no lifeline to the outside world. The reader will experience a rapid tempo of unexpected turns, twists, unpredictable relationships, and old adversaries that will keep the pages turning.
Hancock exhibits his mastery of character development. They are credible and wonderfully flawed. His knowledge of black ops/special forces is impressive; the dialogue and narratives demonstrate this unique quality. His world of technical advancement in weaponry, surveillance, and AI is almost unbelievable and many times highly sinister. Is this a glimpse into the future, or are we already there? The reader will not be disappointed. The language is sometimes technical and specialized, but Hancock takes us along for the ride. And what a ride it is—thoroughly worth the trip!
The Spear and Sentinel is the high-octane sequel to The Hawk Enigma and let me just say it did not disappoint. Mixing action with the ever present and growing threat of AI. While they often say sequels never live up to the original, although this may tie more with movies, but I have to say that The Spear and Sentinel is just as good, if not better than the Hawk Enigma. I love that Voodoo and their team are back and once again we see an highly trained team but again we see the human side. Yes, they are trained, yes they are some of the best, but you can also see the human flaws and humanity in them too. For me this is what I felt helps it stand out. Yes, I love the tightly woven plot and fast pace but for me it’s the characters that make this series shine. While some of the technical jargon might have surpassed my understanding it was explained in such a way that it only added a layer of interest. I am really hoping we’ll get more Voodoo thrillers in the future and Hancock will definitely be an instant buy author in the future. As always thank you to Literally PR for the copy to review. My review is always honest, truthful and freely given.
The Spear and the Sentinal is book two in the Voodoo series, and as with book one ( The Hawk Enigma ), it certainly hits the ground running right from the very start. It's thrills and spills from the get go, with action galore, intrigue and conspiracy by the bucket load, and great military and technological aspects.
The author’s obvious meticulous research really does shine through in the fine details and wonderfully descripive writing.
Without giving too much away, Voodoo and the team are back, and are once again at the forefront of international conflict, this time our scene is set in Kazakhstan, and Voodoo the Seals take on a covert mission revolving around a top secret AI research lab, where If successful, their creations could completely change the face of Warfare forever.
Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up to find out.
So all in all, a throughly entertaining read with quite the pacy storyline, that bobs along nicely and holds your attention to the very end.
I found the characters to be believable, with good depth and they felt real all round.
Voodoo is back! Having read The Hawk Enigma, I raced straight onto the sequel, The Spear and the Sentinel. Whilst I have read the books in order, you could pick up The Spear and the Sentinel as a standalone as the author includes a quick recap of The Hawk Enigma for anyone who hasn't read it.
The reader is plunged straight into the action and the pacing never lets up as the story progresses at an impressive rate of knots. There are a lot of close shaves that had me holding my breath in anticipation as I have really come to care about Voodoo and his team.
Some of the technology went way over my head but I still enjoyed the book and I really appreciated the way the author explained the myriad acronyms so quickly after they were mentioned.
The Spear and the Sentinel is a cracking sequel that is filled with tension, suspense and action. A highly recommended read that is unmissable if you love a military thriller and/or technothriller.
I received a gifted paperback to read and review for the blog tour and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing tour. Thank you @literallypr and @authorjlhancock for introducing me to Al and ‘real world’ sci-fi through the Voodoo Series.
We’re back with book two in the series. The Hawk Enigma had me on the edge of my seat. I felt exactly the same way and even more so whilst reading The Spear and the Sentinel.
✨ New Technology ✨ New Battlefield ✨ Old Enemies
Within book 2 Voodoo and his team are right back into the heart of a global conflict. I really enjoyed the aspects of exploding dark ambitions and a secret lab advancing AI warfare. I followed the mission carefully and couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next.
What happens to a world where AI resigns supreme? Is there any turning back? Please order this book to find out.
I loved reading every page of this brilliant storytelling full of action-adventure writing. I was utterly blown away by the first chapter chapters in this book. Amazing book yet again @authorjlhancock
l’d 100% recommend this book to everyone. Easy 5⭐️ rating
Three words: Clear. Your. Calendar. J.L. Hancock delivers yet again with the thrilling sequel to his first VooDoo series installment. His writing style is effortlessly engaging, pulling you into a mind-bending world where artificial intelligence blurs the line between reality and possibility. Each chapter strikes a perfect balance—complex yet concise—making it impossible to resist the urge to read “just one more.” While the story itself unfolds over a matter of days, it’s so immersive you’ll feel like you’ve lived lifetimes alongside the characters. Hancock masterfully weaves together intricate concepts that will leave you in awe. VooDoo and his crew—unconventional, elite, and endlessly compelling—are back, joined by intriguing new faces that add fresh energy to the plot. If you love stories that dive straight into the action and keep you on edge until the very last page, this book is a must-read.
The Spear and the Sentinel by J.L. Hancock is an electrifying sequel that catapults readers back into the high-stakes world of Voodoo and his elite team of special operators. Set against the backdrop of Kazakhstan's steppes, the story intertwines the shadows of the past with the present threats posed by AI warfare emerging from a secret Chinese lab. Hancock skillfully ramps up the tension as new alliances form and old demons resurface, keeping readers on edge throughout.
Fans of action-packed thrillers reminiscent of Jack Ryan and Clive Cussler will find themselves utterly engrossed in this gripping narrative, filled with geopolitical intrigue and cutting-edge technology. With the fate of the Western world hanging in the balance, Voodoo's journey is a pulse-pounding adventure that leaves you questioning whether his luck will hold. A must-read for those who crave a heart-pounding thrill ride!
It was fun to dive straight back into the Voodoo series with book 2.
It was interesting to meet some new characters and learn their back stories, though I was never sure who I could trust. One particular character made me so angry near the end of the book, I'd have some things to say...
The team working together in a tight-knit group, flying under the radar as much possible was tense at every turn. I also enjoyed the added complications of grudges and conflicting personalities.
The tech stepped up a gear in this book and the international AI race sped ahead with lethal consequences.
Whilst I did get immersed in the story, especially the last half, I don't think it quite hit as hard for me as the first book did.
Overall, another great story for the series, and I will definitely be reading the next one!
*I received a complimentary copy of the book from LiterallyPR and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
J.L. Hancock’s The Spear and the Sentinel is a fast-paced, action-packed thriller that blends military strategy, cutting-edge technology, and high-stakes missions. Following Voodoo and his team as they navigate global conflict, AI warfare, and intense battles, the book keeps you on edge with unexpected twists and realistic, high-tech action. The author does a great job making advanced technology easy to understand while creating a world that feels both futuristic and believable.
The characters are sharp, engaging, and full of personality, with strong teamwork, humor, and emotional depth. Kobra’s story of survival adds a gripping layer to the narrative, making the stakes feel even higher. With vivid settings and relentless action, The Spear and the Sentinel is a must-read for fans of military thrillers like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series.
Just finished @authorjlhancock Voodoo Series and wanted to share my thoughts as a whole. It was very gripping, smart and action-packed.
This techno- thriller series is really clever — full of AI, military ops and action . You can tell the author knows his stuff.
We follow Voodoo — a character with depth and emotion, he’s not just another action hero. He’s a military technician haunted by nightmares of the wars he’s faced and the people he has lost that then start to bleed into reality and you really do start to feel for him and his struggles.
It’s definitely on the more detailed side, not a light read — but if you like your techno-thrillers to have a bit of heart, this series is worth checking out it’s a fascinating, thought provoking read.
A great follow on to the first book, The Hawk Enigma. The adventure kicks off and doesn't stop throughout the entire book. The use of believable next generation technologies is excellent and makes me wish I had some of them on my deployments. The author also touches on the mental health struggles that so many of us are going through and it was appreciated since we can all related to characters that are struggling from the things they have seen, done, and buried away in order to continue on.
I have truly enjoyed both J.L. Hancock's books and am excited for Book 3 of this series to be released.
A new author to me and it took me a bit to get used to his writing style. This story has a lot of detail and at times it seemed a little too wordy for the flow of the story. I obviously haven't read the first story and I suspect reading it would have made this one flow a little better for me. The pace was quite good, but it slowed with switching back and forth. I enjoyed some of the banter between some of the characters, it was quite amusing and I most definitely enjoyed the Tech. An interesting story and I might read the next in the series to see where it goes. I received an free advance review copy and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
The fantastic sequel to book one in "The Spear and the Sentinel" continues the thrilling story. Voodoo and his team are once again embroiled in high-stakes conflict as artificial intelligence advances. The unfolding narrative features covert missions, heightened tensions, and everything to lose. The Western world is changing, with AI reigning supreme and the planet on the brink. What will happen next? I have no idea, but I am concerned about the secret labs and AI warfare. This is an epic sequel, and every time I thought I knew what was going to happen, I was surprised. I love books like this that keep me on my toes!
A fantastic follow up to The Hawk Enigma, although this works as a standalone, I recommend reading in order so you can really get to know the characters.
Voodoo and his elite team are back, faced with another mission that takes them across the globe in a race against time.
I read this straight after book 1 as I wanted to know straight away what the team was up to. This was another exciting mission, this are so fast paced, I felt like I was amongst the action with Voodoo.
AI warfare is terrifying, but the author has created characters that will have you laughing and give a lighthearted relief amongst the what could be accuracy of the events.
The attention to detail in this book is phenomenal. The subject matter of the book is extremely technical and I can believe everything in the book is actually real and it scares me significantly.
The story is excellently written and the author should be proud of it. I like the main character, Voodoo, and his friends on the team. I like that the story changes scene and occasionally the period of time as it really helped set the scene and objectives of the team. The story gripped me from the outset and the tension is maintained until the final full-stop. I couldn't put either book down.
The second book is called The Spear and the Sentinel also by the same author. In the second book Voodoo and his team are back with another heart pounding action packed thrill ride! I loved how the author incorporated foray into modern warfare and technology. The second book takes the readers to Asia where AI is everywhere and even more prevalent than the US. This is a great read for fans of thrillers like Tom Clancy books! I hope there will be another book in the Voodoo series soon as it is a great military, techno thriller for y'all to read and I liked this one with all the action.
The Spear and the Sentinel is a compelling read that balances intense action with deep emotional resonance. For anyone interested in military fiction that challenges conventional narratives through the lens of technology, this book is a must-read. Hancock’s ability to create suspense while addressing significant global issues makes this novel not only entertaining but also relevant in today's context.
