A Craftsman’s Work by K.J. Dando: A Thoughtful Return to Tom Crane’s World

Returning to Tom Crane’s world in ‘A Craftsman’s Work’ by K.J. Dando felt like catching up with an old friend after a long absence. Having read the first book in the series over a year ago, I eagerly anticipated this second instalment. As only the author’s second published novel, there’s a freshness to Dando’s voice that feels both exciting and familiar, making the Tom Crane series a notable new entry in the crime fiction landscape.

‘A Craftsman’s Work’ plunges readers into a high-stakes investigation, with Tom Crane facing new challenges as he seeks justice for victims who might otherwise be forgotten. The provided synopsis teases a case that tests Crane’s determination and moral compass, weaving a story that is as much about personal redemption as it is about solving crime. The central plot is compelling, with enough twists to satisfy genre aficionados while never losing sight of the human cost at the heart of criminal acts.

One of the standout achievements of this book is its seamless continuity from the first in the series. Dando skilfully threads subtle references and ongoing character arcs from the previous novel, rewarding returning readers like myself. Yet, ‘A Craftsman’s Work’ also stands strong on its own—the plot is self-contained, enabling newcomers to dive in without confusion. It’s a delicate balancing act, and Dando delivers it with confidence, showing clear growth and assurance as a writer since his debut.

Tom Crane remains the beating heart of the series. He is a character defined by integrity, quiet sensitivity, and a relentless pursuit of justice. In this book, his relationships are given particular attention—his uncle / niece relationship with Chloe provides both professional sparks and moments of genuine warmth, while his dynamic with Ricky adds layers of camaraderie and comic relief.
Crane’s romantic life, particularly his connection with Ella, is woven through the narrative with subtlety. Their interactions are charged with a tension that feels real and relatable, though I found myself wishing for more engagement between them and a more conclusive summary of where their relationship stands by the end. This slight ambiguity leaves room for future development but also left me yearning for a bit more closure in this instalment.

What elevates ‘A Craftsman’s Work’ above a standard procedural is its emotional resonance. There are moments that are genuinely heartbreaking, as Crane confronts not only the darkness in the world but also within himself and those he cares about. The justice-driven core of the story never feels didactic; instead, it emerges naturally from Crane’s empathy and commitment. This emotional undercurrent is, for me, what makes the series so engaging and has cemented Tom Crane as a memorable protagonist.
As the final page turned, I found myself already anticipating the third book in the Tom Crane series. My hope is that Dando continues to delve into the uncle-niece relationship, which adds such a touching dimension to Crane’s character, and further explores his sensitive side. There’s a lovely sentiment echoed throughout that “everyone needs an Uncle Crane”—and after spending time with this book, I couldn’t agree more. Thoughtful, emotionally resonant, and expertly paced, ‘A Craftsman’s Work’ cements K.J. Dando’s place as a rising star in British crime fiction.

when Michael a wealthy businessman and his fiancée Lindsey are awoken to the news their four year old son Jacob has been kidnapped from his bed in the middle of the night, leaving in his place a mobile phone with a cryptic message on it, ‘If you ever want to see Jacob again - answer this phone when it rings and DO NOT call the police. Yours sincerely, The Craftsman’ But who is The Craftsman, and what does he really want? There’s only one man for the job - Tom Crane is a fixer, and knows how to get the job done. With the help of his tech genius friend Ricky, can they unravel the threads to this mystery and discover the identity of The Craftsman and bring Jacob home before it’s too late? I thought the first book was good, but my goodness this was absolutely fantastic! I really enjoyed following Crane on another mission and this one was like no other. The story was full of twists and turns that had me guessing the whole was through - who abducted Jacob, and who in the house was behind it all? This time around we see a more vulnerable side to Crane, his complex relationship with Ella shows that even through his cool and collected demeanour, he has strong feelings for her, as well as the way this case is affecting him, though he doesn’t show it. It feels like we are getting to know just that bit more about him. I absolutely loved this book, and I can’t wait to see where Crane’s story takes him next! Thank you so much to KJ Dando and for having me on the tour in exchange for my review, you smashed it and I wish you every success with this book and hopefully there will be more to come!

This was my first read from K.J. Dando, and I've got a feeling it won't be my last. From the moment I started, I was hooked - this author really knows how to pull you into their world.

The story follows Michael and his fiancée as they wake up to find their son Jacob missing. All that's left behind is an old school phone with a chilling message: "If you ever want to see Jacob again - answer this phone when it rings and DO NOT call the Police. Yours Sincerely, The Craftsman."

But when you can't turn to the cops for help, who do you turn to? Enter Tom Crane - a fixer who's kind of like a British Ray Donovan. Crane's the guy you call when you need someone to get the job done, no matter how unconventional the methods. And that's exactly what Michael and Lindsey need if they're ever going to get their little boy back.

I loved the relationship between Crane and his best friend (and business partner) Ricky. There's a real sense of respect and understanding there that you don't always find. They're the perfect team.

Dando did an amazing job creating this world and keeping the narrative tight and captivating. Even though this is the second book in the series, I had no trouble diving right in. I can't wait to see what else Dando has in store - this was a thrilling 5-star read that I'd recommend to anyone who loves a good page-turner.

K.J. Dando has done it again! I love this series so much! Crane is a fantastic character and I love his friendship with Ricky and his protectiveness of his niece, Chloe.

This story follows Crane as he goes on the hunt to find a missing child - Jacob - taken from his home in the night. The parents are awoken to find a distraught nanny who can't find their son. On arriving in Jacob's room, the duvet is gone and on the mattress is a phone.

The kidnapper has set his demands in order to bring their child back. Money is a powerful thing but also just as powerful in the wrong hands. This is a story where any of the staff, either of the parents or any one connected with the family could be the kidnapper. I love how Crane and Ricky do their Detective work and unravel the plans.

Would recommend this series and cannot wait for Crane's next job!

This is book 2 in the Tom Crane series set in Wales near Cardiff. Tom is brought in as the fixer to help find Jacob, a little 4 year old boy taken from his home and a mobile phone has been left on his bed for his parents to use to be in contact with The Craftsman. The story is fast paced, full of intrigue, rollercoaster of a read, a few nail biting moments throughout the book and plenty of twists and turns. I love Tom's relationships with his business partner / friend, Ricky and his niece Chloe. The ending was a HUGE surprise to me. More Tom please.

Book two of the Tom Crane series did not disappoint. This solid mystery is well paced and thought out and keeps you guessing right to the end. Reminded me of a cross between the equalizer and a detective story but with only 20% of the violence. Crane is someone you want in your corner when life throws you a curveball. Dando has a fantastic way of making his books personable with the fixer Tom Crane, his friends and family and the victims he helps. Can’t wait for book three as this series promises to split wide open.

I devoured A Craftsman's Work in one sitting! I just couldn't put it down. When a 4 year old child goes missing and the parents don't know where to turn, they're given the number of Crane - a fixer, who'll do whatever it takes. Who is The Craftsman? Where can he find him? With a reclusive computer whizz kid partner and an eroding personal relationship, can he save Jacob before it's too late?

All the stars for this outstanding thriller. I love the character of Crane and his methods of 'fixing' along with Ricky. A tough one this time, but revenge is sweet and best served cold.
A Craftsman's Work was a superb read and had me gripped and fully entertained for the whole book. K J Dando writes such good stories, and I can't wait for the next one. A great balance of drama, twists, and personal issues makes these books really stand out

I loved this book!!! I disliked the small cliffhanger at the end because I have to wait so long before the next one comes out but at least it’s something to look forward to.
Tom Crane is fast becoming one of my favourite serial characters. Each adventure is full of twists and turns and the storyline is addictive. KJ has a way of sucking you into his characters and their emotions. He hooks you immediately and barely spits you back out at the end…. Basically you’re just dying for more even though you’ve just been given a completely engrossing exciting story. It’s a talent.
This story is unique and emotional, isn’t it literally every parents worst nightmare to have their child kidnapped?! So your blood is already pumping as you crack open the first pages and you have to keep going to obtain YOUR desired outcome. But there is always a story within the story adding complex layers to Tom’s chaotic life and alas this is where up end up dying for more.
I am so pumped I got to read this book before the masses, I love it. I can’t wait for the next piece of the Tom Crane puzzle falls into place!
