The text covers basic geology, ore deposits, high-tech processing, sampling and drilling, mining methods, processing ore, mining and the environment, the mining team, the business of mining, feasibility, metal markets, making sense of the numbers, and investing in mining. The glossary helps shed light on the myriad geological and financial terms of the industry.
Useful background to learn about the big picture for the mining industry ranging from project consideration to completion. I found the discussion of the applications of chemistry and physics to mining problems to be quite fascinating and not something that I previously spent a lot of time thinking about. I think the book canvassed the basics discussing an array of topics that an interested reader could pursue. This approach made it quick and easy to get through despite what at times read like a textbook.
In contrast, I think this book would have been more helpful if there was more detailed description on some of the processes for a lay reader. Relatedly, I think the reader would have been better served by replacing some of the many photos with graphics that presented the information in a different way. Partially due to the nature of the book but also the writing style, I rarely found myself eager to read more.
Overall, the book accomplished the purpose of teaching me a lot more about mining but also left me wanting more.
