About the Constance is nearly always to be found with a pencil in her hand making notes for a new story. She has led a varied life and done many jobs from cup washer, lecturer, to new age healer but has always written since she was a child.
A major health scare recently though, made her see life differently, and after years as a part-time writer, she turned full-time, because as she says - life is too short not to do what you love. She has literally climbed a mountain and made many sacrifices to pen her novels and now builds on a fund of wonderful encounters with intriguing people, plus her imagination, to write stories with strong characters and determined and adventurous women.
Carrie Ann, a brilliant baker with exception gifts of manupulating sugary creativity. Released form her prison in form of controlling and dictating father, she explore her new world of possibilities and challenges. Her strings of lies when she met Dominic. Too good to be true, she makes up stories about her life to him. Little that she know, Dominic is on to her.
At first I was intruiged, but it was short lived. In the middle the plot just lost me and I struggle to finish it. And then, the story picked up again and before I know it it was over. What I like about this book is, what Carrie Ann goes through her lies, she struggled to not letting go of her past, her vulnerabilities of self esteem and confidence.
Usually I can't help but adore a delicious romance set in the kitchen, but SWEET SECRETS didn't leave me feeling satiated.
Essentially held captive her entire life by an overbearing and ill father, Carrie Ann Jude is finally starting to spread her wings upon his death, even planning to start an erotic cake business now that she's free. On a flight back from the US, Carrie Ann meets the sexy young Dominic and sparks fly. She can't believe he'd be interested in her, so she doesn't hesitate to tell some lies, substituting her father's shackles for a faux husband and knocking a few years off of her age. She doesn't expect to see him again after all, so no harm, no foul. But fate is funny, and the two chance upon one another again. Before she knows what's happening, he's staying in her home, he's helping get her business off the ground and she's no longer a virgin.
Carrie Ann has gone and fallen hard for Dominic, but how will she explain the atrocious lies she told? Will he still feel the same once he finds out her secrets?
SWEET SECRETS is a book in the What's Her Secret? series of novels featuring women with secrets by a variety of authors. This book started off very slow and dry, and I had a tough time connecting with Carrie Ann. She had so many insecurities and issues that it got to the point where I was more annoyed than empathetic, the constant "why would you want me?" and "you couldn't possibly be falling for me" had me wishing Dominic would just agree and walk away. I can't stand female characters who are utterly and completely insecure, though Carrie Ann did gain a bit of strength as the book went on. I didn't fully grasp her concept of erotic cake art…that was a huge facet of the plot but, unless I missed something, I don't think she actually DID any raunchy designs for her customers, leaving me confused as to why this was even a thing.
Now the lies. Told for absolutely no reason and with plenty of opportunities to come clean, the continued perpetuation of her BS just made me shake my head. And the fact that Dominic didn't catch on after living in town and meeting loads of people who knew Carrie Ann's past didn't make much sense either. I did like him though, he was like a cute little puppy, all high energy and affection, however I truly couldn't see any chemistry between the two of them whatsoever (hell, she had better chemistry in her fantasies about a fellow chef!). There were several areas in SWEET SECRETS where I found myself trying to figure out why Carrie Ann was reacting to things so outlandishly, so while the editing was nicely done, there were parts that made me feel like I was missing something integral to the story.
Bottom Line: A whiny, insecure heroine and her "woe is me" mentality made this one cooking book I didn't find appetizing. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...
Carrie Ann is a very sheltered, somewhat naive 30+ year old woman just beginning to explore the world outside her home and books. She meets Dominic while waiting on a flight back home to London from the states. Carrie Ann is freaked out by their age difference and seems to flop back and forth between being okay with it and being uncomfortable. Their connection is a bit forced and he sometimes comes across as pushy and clingy.
The story was good. It is always fun to watch a character grow and change. She struggles with her self doubts and by the end of the story she has begun to find her voice. I was a little disappointed in the lack of emotional/sexual tension.
I found it a little difficult to relate to her as she spends much time lost inside her own head and insecurities. Some of the flashbacks make it hard to follow the story. The story is written in a English voice and therefore there are some phrases and words that will be foreign to the American reader.
This was a strange story. It was interesting at times, but hard to follow. Carrie Ann had led a very sheltered life. She had cared for an ill, domineering father for a long time. He had recently died and she had taken a holiday to come out of her shell. She meets Dominic at the airport and starts lying to him from the start. I didn't get why she continued to perpetuate the lies, but she did. She also had a rich fantasy life where her introspection and inner dialogue often confuses and interferes with the actual story.
