A decent introduction to Seurat, but an introduction only. The benefit of this book is that it's enormous, which gives you a chance to really examine the full-page art reproductions and notice little details in them that you'd otherwise miss. The drawback is that it's too short: there's a nice essay in front discussing Seurat's style and influences, but only about a dozen of his drawings and paintings are reproduced, and I'd like either more information or more reproductions (especially his landscapes, which are mentioned a few times but not really represented in the works Broude has chosen to showcase).
I will be playing violin in a production of "Sunday in the Park with George" which is based on Seurat's painting, "A Sunday Afternoon on La Grande Jatte." So when I saw Broude's book on Seurat on the give-away shelf at the library, I grabbed it. The book is printed in a large format, so the reproductions of the paintings, some covering two pages, are of a respectable size and clarity with good color. Instead of a typical artist biography, Broude writes more about the creation of the works themselves and the art world's changing analysis and interpretation of them. There is a lot of information and ideas to consider while enjoying the art samples.
