I am not very versed with digital design, having never been terrible interested in it. I did learn sign painting in high school and have kept my quills handy and well oiled. I have done sign work as discussed in the book using a sho-card brush and acrylic paint. The book is excellent, going through all the stages from beginning sketches to polished deliverable. The author is quite knowledgeable in what she does and gives lots of examples and finished products she has done in the past. I recommend this book for artists interested in digital design and lettering.
Very cool to see the pencil sketches and the final ads and book covers that feature hand lettering. Surrounding paragraphs also give details on how companies utilized the lettering to create a finished product.
This is Chronicle Book’s revised edition of the incredibly impressive Jessica Hische’s 2015 book. It’s filled with lots of insight about how she got to where she is, her work and process, the tools she uses, and also interesting bits about some of the projects she’s done (including logo work for some big names).
While she’s been very successful and remains at the forefront of graphic design, Hische comes across in this book as very accessible and also open about sharing her creative process. It’s a fascinating to read, and readers may even pick up a tip or two on how to successfully run a design business.
Wonderful for anyone interested in graphic design today.
