Some thieves get away with it, and appear to live the rest of their lives in comfort and luxury. But not without meeting twenty-something society brats Jane del Mundo and Gabriel Grande first. Jane and Gabriel are not in the business of apprehending them though, but in recovering what has been stolen, in very specific amounts.
How are society girl Elizabeth Madrid and young actress Truffles Marquez connected? Not in any way Truffles is aware of, until a government official with a very specific crush unwittingly becomes the next mark for Jane and the gang.
(10,500 WORDS / ADULT THEMES AND SITUATIONS / Story #2 in the Scambitious series)
Mina V. Esguerra writes contemporary romance and young adult novellas. She has a bachelor's degree in Communication and a master's degree in Development Communication, put to good use in her work as trainer and content management consultant. Mina lives in Metro Manila, Philippines, with her husband and daughter.
She finds inspiration in the lives and experiences of other people, so the answer to "Is this story based on you?" is always, always "No."
This has got to be my second favorite story written by Mina Esguerra (first is Fairy Tale Fail). It's the second part of her Young and Scambitious series, where Jane and her group are on a "job" that involves scamming people with the help of (hot) Gabriel. It's very different from the light and fluffy romantic works of Mina, but I just love how every character stands out even if the story is short. I don't have favorites as I loved Jane, Gabriel, Alexander and Wendy. It's dark, naughty and addictive, making you crave for more.
Properly Scandalous is more like a short story because of its length but nevertheless, enough to cover all major points to keep the story interesting. I admit that the concept is pretty cool. I mean, we usually see "scammers" as antagonists in stories, right? It's quite refreshing to see the world through their eyes for a change.
The characters were cool in some ways. And I liked Jane/Gabriel and Wendy/Alexander. Especially the latter since they're too cute :) Some occurrences were a bit confusing to me though. Maybe I would have understand it better if I've read the first one first but I guess Ate Luna is still right. I managed to understand the plot fairly well, just not the characters fully.
Anyway, as much as I liked the concept and the characters, I wasn't much thrilled about the completely package after reading it. I know it's meant to be different from the author's usual "light", "fluffy", and "teens-y" works and maybe that's why I didn't really enjoy it that much. I don't think NA is my cup of tea hahaha :) I'd rather stick with YA, which is my groove as of the moment :)
I haven't read the first book in the Young and Scambitious series, so I was kind of taken aback when I read Properly Scandalous. It's like I was grasping for something in the middle the night and I didn't know how to move around. The characters were a bit hazy at first, which made them more intriguing and their job mind-boggling.
And then it hit, these aren't your typical members of the society. They're much more than that. They're young but with great minds, cunning yet brilliant, sophisticated yet unscrupulous thieves. They have a master plan, they stick to it, they spend money and they earn millions. They create controversial videos that could hurt one's career, but that doesn't faze them, as long as they get what they think they rightfully deserve.
Jane del Mundo aroused my curiosity; there was something about her that raised my eyebrows. Gabriel Grande, now he's another story, very very intriguing, with secrets of his own. What's that number of a missing person doing on his phone? And Jane, what are you gonna do about it? The book is definitely intriguing and I intend to read more about them! Mina Esguerra just gained a new fan!
Mina is known for sweet and likable heroines and stories, but she does nasty extremely well too. Jane, the heroine of Properly Scandalous (and Young and Scambitious) is deliciously nasty, but in the Janet "Miss Jackson if you're nasty" good way, to make it clear. She's intriguing and brilliant and unpredictable and I can't wait to find out what she'll get up to next. Plus the chemistry between her and Gabriel? SCORCHING.
I loved how this book was written. I love how the caper was laid out, with just enough clues to keep you reading but not enough to spoil the reveal. I was guessing as I read, wondering what Jane had up her sleeve, and when it was done and I back read, it was all there, and everything made sense. Nicely done!
Mina writes in the afterword how she has a fourth installment plotted out for the Scambitious series, and all I can say is yes please!! This could be our own dark Nancy Drew, LOL!
Properly Scandalous is the second installment of Mina V. Esguerra's Young and Scambitious series.
I liked this a whole lot more than the first one which, unfortunately, I will have to reread because the only thing I can remember about it right now is Jane's and Gabriel's first meeting and how they, er, hooked up.
The gang is back and they are scamming a dirty politician who has an unhealthy fixation with Truffles Marquez this time. Jane and Alexander were supposed to team up and star on a grainy video to bait the politician but Gabriel let jealousy or whatever get the better of him and stepped into Alexander's role.
I loved Properly Scandalous because, well, it was interesting. I learned more about the characters' lives and how they 'work.' That, and I'm loving Jane and Gabriel as well as Wendy and Alexander.
Looking forward to reading the third installment of this series.

I got Properly Scandalous, the second part of Young and Scambitious (Y&S) through Mina's newsletter. In Properly Scandalous, Gabriel decides to work with Jane's team for a "job" that involves a condo, a politician, and his fixation to a young starlet.
I'm a fan of Jane and Gabriel from the start because Y&S is different from everything that I've read from the author. Properly Scandalous is full of lies, scams, and more lies. It's I like how I got to know more about Jane and the rest of the team. I wish that the parts exploring Alexander and Wendy were longer because I wanted to know more about them.
Despite being a short read, I enjoyed reading Properly Scandalous. I hope the next part gets released soon. :)
