As a longtime fan of Merchant Ivory films, I found Solid Ivory a candid and entertaining autobiography. James Ivory’s memoir is refreshingly honest, offering glimpses into his personal life, creative journey, and decades-long partnership with Ismail Merchant. What makes the book especially intriguing is a unique section where Ivory writes essays about the many people he’s met through his career, sharing frank and sometimes surprising views on actors, collaborators, and cultural figures.
