A short pamphlet surveying the historical record of rather more than half the population of Britain over a period of a hundred years must of necessity be sketchy and incomplete. The great interest in history of women which has arisen in the last few decades has produced a great deal of lively and stimulating work, but in many crucial areas there is still a good deal of guesswork rather than scholarly investigation. This survey looks at work that has been done on some of the most important questions that concerned women in Britain during the last century, and suggests possible further reading. It can, however, only deal with a small selection of the many works available.

About the author

Dorothy Thompson was an American journalist and radio broadcaster, who was noted by Time magazine in 1939 as one of the two most influential women in America, the other being Eleanor Roosevelt.

She is notable as the first American journalist to be expelled from Nazi Germany (in 1934), one of the few women news commentators on radio during the 1930s, and as the inspiration for Katharine Hepburn's character "Tess Harding" in the film Woman of the Year (1942).
