I liked reading it because it helps you with something in real life and it gives you a way to help yourself if you ever feel like Felix did in the story.
A sweet and easily accessible story about Felix dealing with anxiety and includes a practical breathing strategy for dealing with unsettling emotions. The illustrations reinforce the place of the red balloon as a metaphor for apprehension. As a single message book written for one purpose, the story is less appealing to me. I prefer the message in a picture book to be less overt and to require some delving and reflection. However, the style of the book will neatly meet the needs of parents, carers and teachers seeking a straight forward way of introducing and normalising approaches to dealing with anxiety.
This book is absolutely beautiful! My child connected instantly with Felix and his “worry balloon.” It opened up such a gentle conversation about anxiety and feelings every parent needs this book.
What a heartfelt story. The way it explains worry and emotions in a way kids can understand is brilliant. Felix’s journey gave my little one comfort and confidence.
Felix undertakes morning routines happily as he prepares for his first day at school. but as they head out the door a red balloon of worry appears. As the day progresses, fears of not fitting in, making a mistake if reading aloud and so on, cause the red balloon to continue to grow. The next day the balloon reappears but a thoughtful dad provides Felix with a coping strategy to move beyond his fears. Growing in confidence, Felix shares hid newly learned technique when he spots an isolated child in the playground.
Devezy and Alice have written a kindly and gentle story on a popular topic. Zoe Bennett’s illustrations add extra layers to the story with varied layouts and spacing to highlight the balloon and delightful snapshots of an inclusive family with dad playing a significant role. The coping strategy adds value to the story for its practicality. Felix's support of a fellow student models caring behaviour. The text was a little cramped and hard to read, especially within the balloon.
