After yet another heartbreak, veterinarian Kelli Hinton is done with broad-shouldered tough guys. From now on, she’s dating only accountants and symphony musicians! Then Cole Tyler calls her out to his Colorado ranch for an emergency calf delivery. Her sweet childhood friend has turned into a handsome, tough-as-rawhide cowboy, but their old connection is still as easy and natural as it ever was. It’s the perfect friendship for two people who are too scarred by their respective pasts to pursue anything like love. But some bonds are too strong to ignore forever…
From Harlequin Wholesome stories of love, compassion and belonging.
Award-winning author Eliza D. Collins writes heartfelt and heartwarming romance with characters you’ll want to fall in love with. She shares plenty in common with her Tillacos Creek Ranch characters, living in rural southern Colorado with her West Texas cowboy husband and their menagerie of horses, dogs, chickens, and various strays who adopt them.

Kelli and Cole have always been friends, but after some time apart, they reconnect when Kelli comes to help on his ranch as a vet. As they spend more time together, their friendship starts to change, and new feelings begin to grow.
Both Kelli and Cole have been hurt by past relationships, so they’re hesitant to dive into something new. Every time they make progress, fears and doubts hold them back, making it hard to move forward. Can they both let go of their pasts and take a chance on each other, or will their fears keep them from a future together?
This was a sweet and quick read. I thought it would be a simple romance, but I loved that both Kelli and Cole had to work through their own struggles with trust. It wasn’t just about Kelli finding love, it was about Cole opening up too, which made their story even better. I really enjoyed the side characters and the animals, which added a nice touch to the story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and this review reflects my honest opinion.
First in the Tillacos Ranch series, in which veterinarian Kelli Hinton is working create a good career for herself with her new clinic in southern Colorado. When she's called to Cole Tyler's ranch, newly his responsibility since the recent death of his father, she encounters a friend she had during childhood and longs to be able to trust herself with a relationship that doesn't end badly. Not what she's been able to escape with previous boyfriends.
Cole, too, has trust issues, mostly stemming from his status as a foster child until he was adopted by the couple who raised him along with their other two sons.
But will their own issues from the past continue to halt their tentative steps into a future when the present seems, at times, to be so difficult? Thank goodness for loving dogs that can help these great characters to take those new steps even when scared.
A book for lovers of animals, for sure, this is a fun romance set on a working Colorado ranch. The friends to lovers trope isn’t without its hurdles, and the author does a good job in showing both characters’ concerns. The book is quite informative on ranch life, including its ups and downs, and I found myself on the edge of my seat through a few of the main turning points.
This is the first in a series, and I thank the author for an advanced copy
*Because romance is very subjective, and ratings systems not conducive to that, but because writers depend on reviews, I rate as such:
Five stars for a well written book I loved Four stars for a book I liked Three stars for a book others might enjoy even if it might not have been my cup of tea.
Writing is damn hard. Readers like what we like. Not all books are for everyone. Be kind.
