This is the third book in the "Kolyma Tales" series, comprising six books altogether. All six books are connected to the lives of prisoners in the infamous Kolyma labor camp. After reading the first book, the subsequent books become quite repetitive, sharing similar styles and themes.
One of the main challenges in reading these books lies in their writing style. The language used in the camp is unfamiliar to most readers, making it difficult to comprehend the narrative. Additionally, the writing style itself is intentionally slow-paced, as a deliberate tactic employed by Shalamov to encourage readers to savor the story.
While the stories themselves are intriguing, they lack the engaging narrative that would make them truly captivating. Instead, they come across as dry and documentary-like, presenting a factual account of the camp's harsh realities.
Given these factors, I would not reread this book.
