The Reapers of the Light is an impressive debut novel by a bright and budding author. While it may not be the best novel I read this year (as it is only January and I have an ever-growing TBR), it is a fascinating and unique read that I enjoyed discovering and will recommend.
The world is very distinct and very well-planned. The premise is interesting, and I was intrigued to discover the setting through the eyes of Josephine (the main character). I have read several novels that used the idea of the afterlife, but none with such an enthralling premise and distinctive setting. The world and its law are slowly revealed to the audience, adding mystery and curiosity. While I have some slight questions about the world and feel as though not all aspects were fully explained, this is only the first book in the series, and I am certain that further details will be uncovered later.
The pacing and tone fit perfectly with the plot, characters, and setting. As many people know, I am not a huge advocate for first-person narration, so I was extremely happy to find that The Reapers of the Light is written in third-person narration. The language is good, with a wide vocabulary that is not lacking. However, I did find some very slight punctuation errors throughout the piece, which are very slight and do not tarnish the novel or experience in any way.
Josephine is a well-rounded main character with a fascinating backstory. The audience delves into her history throughout the novel, and she is a relatable female lead. She is flawed, which is necessary for a main character, and acts quite childish at times, which may annoy some readers. However, her childish actions and reactions are potentially due to her lack of emotional maturity, due to her inability to grow up and develop in the real world.
All other characters are very different and flawed in their personalities, making them more realistic, relatable and likable. The characters are consistent in their personalities and are, overall, well-written, particularly the male leads. As for the main villain, Sirius, while his intentions are not entirely evident yet, his character is perfectly villainous, hateful, and disturbing. He is extremely well portrayed and the audience truly feels Josephine's emotions towards him when his character waltzes onto the page.
The plot is a slow burn, which I adored. The audience will gradually discover elements of the plot and the past and present of the characters throughout the novel. The end has a plot twist and cliffhanger that, despite the foreshadowing throughout, surprised me. Potential readers will be waiting impatiently for the next book to come out. While certain elements of the novel are predictable, they are still enjoyable, and this does not tarnish the plot twists and storyline.
Overall I really enjoyed The Reapers of the Light. I recommend this book for all the modern fantasy and romance lovers out there; you will adore this novel in all its aspects. Nina Treboux has done an excellent job tuning her novel for the target audience; you can feel the love she placed in the writing, characters, plot, and universe, and her series will definitely grow and go far. I thank her for the opportunity to read this great debut novel, and I am excited to continue the series.
This was a really interesting debut novel! The concept and execution were top notch!
I really like the main character, and secondary characters. The villain is very interesting and overall it’s a great beginning. I’m really excited to see where the story goes is ne next book.
The story is very inventive and well paced. It’s felt very atmospheric and vivid. The characters are interesting and intriguing, and I can’t wait to delve deeper into everyone’s personality.
The only thing I’d have to say took me out of the reading experience a little were the typos and a few mistakes throughout the text. Being French it made it sometimes harder to understand. But it doesn’t substrat anything from the atmosphere or the story.
This book dived me in a unique universe. Exploring the afterlife the way I've never imagined it before, yet, captivating. It's refreshing to read something new. The characters are relatable, well-developed, so layered it's easy to connect with them. Understand their fears, loyalties, and flaws. And the plot twist. God, the plot twist it's insane and you'll want to open book 2 immediately.
I dare you not to get mesmerize by Nina's world and writing.
Omg upset with myself for pausing this book for so long! I jumped back into this book as I wanted to complete it before the year ended and omg it got even better!
This is a debut book for the author. I thought the world was so interesting! There are light and dark reapers and I loved following the characters
The found family in this is great! Our FMC learns a lot about herself! The ending in this book had me so shocked. There was something I predicted but it felt like a distraction for the plot twist that happened!?
Rating: 4 ⭐️ Commentary: I am so impressed with this book! This book was independently published and was the first book published by the author. We follow Josephine in the afterlife. Her job is to send souls to the light before the villains of the book, the Grims, send them to the dark. I think the premise and the setting of this book was so original and unique.
This is a great book if you love fantasy or books about living in the afterlife. It also has a hint of romance, but it’s definitely a subplot.
*Book was sent to me by the author in exchange for a review.
I really enjoyed this book. A new fantasy favorite. The author introduced many characters (I already have a favorite) and I can’t wait for her to dive deeper into their stories. Along with great characters, Nina introduces a complexed world where Angels, Grims and Missionaries exist (read the book for more details on them).
Nina Treboux's debut novel is an alluring and action-packed fantasy story. It mixes a well-thought-out plot full of mysteries and twists, and a loveable and diverse cast of well crafted characters. You can feel the love and care that she put into this book through the many details in it. The fast pace of the story and tension makes it hard to put it down, and the descriptions and flashbacks make you deep dive into the characters' history. It was a super super fun read, and I'd read it again!
