Branden loves his college roommate. He’s a strong, serious African—and as overpoweringly gorgeous as a marble statue. He even has a statue’s name: Taharqa, the Black Pharaoh who ruled Egypt and Nubia in Old Testament times. But he’s just Archie to Branden.
When Branden learns the secret that has brought Taharqa to the States, nothing can keep him from joining in the plan to bring needed material to modern technology. But there are forces seeking to uncover their efforts and take the glory for themselves. Their teamwork—and their love—are put to the test at every turn.
Taharqa loves Branden. He’s a joyous wrestler jock and a brilliant classmate. Unfortunately, Taharqa has a task—a world-important stratagem—and he doesn’t want to expose Brand to the perils shadowing his efforts and endangering his secret, ancient people. Complicating things further is a mythic challenge meant to change Taharqa from human to god.
Love overcomes caution as the risks increase. From the States to Sudan, sailing the River Nile, and battling multiple kidnappers across Rome, they confront the dark forces moving in. Will Taharqa’s powers and his love be enough to rescue Brand and save the secret of Nubia and his hidden home?
Amazing Journey into the past while never leaving the present.
Very different in a good way. I loved the mix of ancient history and modern day. I didn't want the book to end. I did not want to leave the amazing world that the author created.

4.5 of 5 stars - Great Modern-Historical Afrocentric Adventure with 2 Hot Men I love a mash-up of mm rom, historical, paranormal & adventure. Other revfewers said it better, but R. Frank Davis drew me in so much with his premise of a modern strategem to save the world combined with an ancient African culture & myth, and deftly mixing in a tasty romance & other layered elements.
I loved the contemporary African & African Amercian couple. Both well characterized & likeable. Their growing relationship had me wishing the best for them. And I fully appreciated that the focus was not just on them & how they advanced the plot. Their manly attraction & sexual electricity was very real.
On top of that, Davis expertly mixed in ancient African history, myths & setting with the modern day thriller-adventure plot, with a cast of well-developed characters. I love learning about history & culture that way & absolutely enjoyed the roller coaster ride he took me on. And his structuring in a very unique way with the mysterious messaging & shifts in time kept me thinking, revealing itself & the intrigue, like pealing an onion ...
DNF's at 43% I really tried reading it several times until I've got to a point where I couldn't force myself anymore. The story has a potential, the lore about the ancient Nubia and Egypt was the initial lure for me but the writing itself was too exhausting for my brain. It was so clattered and convoluted that I totally lost any sense of what's going on and why. There was a lot of sex, secrets and danger, but the constant narration switching and attention to meaningless details confused me. I gave up on making sense about things like coding a product that wouldn't work on purpose, special metal that is valuable for technological progress that someone tried to sell or steel or whatever. The writing style didn't work for me.
I bought 2 more books by this author and I'm not sure I'm willing to give them a try after this mess.
So, this book starts slow, building over time, so readers, just know you need to stick with it and allow the story line to develop around you. Just as one would imagine floating in a river (let's say the Nile) and you float amongst the cataracts, (boulders) then boom you're in the current and before you know it the story is over.
That is my experience of reading Love Gods Magic. Here are some other very nice points this book had going for it:
1. Sexy with good sex scenes (check) 2. Hot men you sorta drool over (check) 3. Intrigue (check) 4. Unpredictable outcome (check) 5. A beautiful tribute to Egypt and Kush (check) 6. Did I mention all the good sex scenes? (check) LOL
There's more, of course, R. Frank did a fabulous job! Loved this great gay Black Pharaoh in modern times story.
R Frank Davis’ novel LOVE GODS MAGIC: The Black Pharaoh is, as its name hints, absolutely magical. He masterfully weaves adventure, romance and humour in the style of an American classic, but with an Afrocentic spin and a hint of film noir.
The action sequences are fast paced, the steamy scenes between characters are well written and the story sweeps the reader along.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good story, great characters and a tale filled with imagination.
