A captain’s mission to prove his mettle turns out to be a man’s trial to earn his first mate’s confidence in this entertaining and fanciful tale of pirates and the supernatural.
Shipwrecked on the island of Gealach—an isle lost in the mist of mythology and mystery—Captain Fish-Eye finds himself pushed to his limits. He must prove to Wokey the Shrimp, his first mate in a crew of one, and more importantly to himself, that he has what it takes to be a true pirate captain.
This won’t be as easy as a walk off the gangplank with the bloodthirsty crew of the Harsh One and their slaughtering captain hot on Fish-Eye’s wake. Things only get worse when Fish-Eye and Shrimp encounter a castaway tormented with the idea that he is a werewolf.
Naught be as it seems on the island of Gealach.
Thrilling and humorous, Of Pirates and Werewolves is a legend of true fantasy adventure told in the tones of Justin Somper’s Vampirates and Rick Riordon’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
My mini summary: The books starts us out with a captain of a dingy, Fish-Eye, and his gullible and dim, but sweet, First Mate, Shrimp. We then learn that they are traveling to an island that hosts a cavern bursting with pearls, but also full of dangers that can kill them, such as werewolves and giants. But alas, there is another ship trying to get to the island! An actual pirate ship with an actual captain and crew, which becomes another danger for Fish-Eye and Shrimp. Of Pirates and Werewolves is a book filled with adventure, self-discovery, and buckets o’ fun!
I am so glad that I asked for an advanced reading copy of this in return for a review. While it might not be exactly the type of genre that I typically read, usually YA, I enjoyed this book immensely. Because of this, though, it took a while to get into and, it took me a bit longer to read.
The only thing I can really criticize is that it ends feeling unfinished. And while this is intended to be a series, I think this book could have been wrapped up better. In my opinion, every book in a series should have a minor goal to accomplish and then have a major goal for the series, or parts of the series. With this book, it gives only major goals to be accomplished without any minor goals.
Overall, I really enjoyed this read, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
Of Pirates and Werewolves is an exciting read. Captain Fisheye is an atypical pirate with an atypical crew, but after what every pirate desires, treasure. Its just too bad that he's not the only one after the pearls and that there are supernatural and cannibalistic forces in his way. But what book would be good without interesting antagonists?
It's easy to become attached to Fisheye and Shrimp - and that makes the book extremely readable. I feel invested in their future and already attached to their characters. I feel angry every time Harshley is the focus, not because I don't want to read about him, he just pours evil and meanness from his every word. I hope that at some point in this series he gets his due.
The only challenge I had was some of the vernacular speech. Although I do often find this to be slightly challenging. I don't believe that the characters origins were mentioned so I don't know what accent I'm meant to be matching the vernacular too.
I really appreciate receiving this book as an ARC from the publisher. I will definitely be waiting with baited breath for the next book - I've got to know what happens next!
Of Pirates and Werewolves is a remarkable book on many levels. Isaiah Silkwood’s first book has hit a homerun and displays a levels of skill in writing which will assure him a strong following as his career as a writer progresses. The technique of telling several tales simultaneously and intersecting them at various points is used expertly by Silkwood to broaden the scope of the story and increase suspense. As I read the book, I was surprised again and again at the skill of such a young writer. I found it difficult to put the book down, and am looking forward to the second book in the series! I was curious as to how Silkwood would handle the violence that the title would imply so as to be appropriate for younger readers. I would classify the violence as minimally descriptive and not graphic. In other words, appropriate for all ages. As a lifelong reader of fiction now in his sixties who collects and devours books of several genres including books for teen readers, I was very surprised that such a book from a novice writer would truly pull me into the story and paint pictures and situations so effectively in my imagination. It compares favorably with some of the best books I have read. I enjoyed the book enormously. One of the hallmarks of good literature is the ability of the author to present multidimensional complex characters, develop those characters and explore their weaknesses and strengths as they develop. Silkwood does this with skill. I can only say God has given Silkwood a great gift in his writing ability. It will be interesting to see how he uses this gift to serve God in the future. I recommend this book to any age reader who enjoys a fanciful adventure story. You will be very glad for the experience.

Of Pirates and Werewolves is the first book in an upcoming series by Isaiah T Silkwood. It follows the journey of two pirates crews, one from the Runt Skimmer and one from the Harsh One as they trek through the treacherous island of Gealach, rumoured to be home to great Aztec Pearls. Of course for any pirate, this booty would simply call their name. For Captain Fish Eye of the Runt Skimmer and it's crew of two, he wants the pearls so he can be a great captain, however Captain Harshley of the Harsh One is a murderous man with a dark evil inside him, who simply wants the pearls for his own gain. On this island, they encounter many things they never expected such as Cyclops, a man who thinks he's a werewolf and cannibals. Can Fish Eye get to the pearls before Harshley? Can Harshley's crew ever escape his cruel hold?
This book is such a unique twist on the Pirate genre. Never before have I heard of pirates and paranormal creatures being combined. Silkwood's use of different language for each of the crew made it easy to know who is talking and at what time. The villains were very easy to hate and the good guys were very easy to love.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the only issue being that it seemed to go on for a while.
I was given a free copy of this book by the publishing company in exchange for an honest review.
The book is about two different groups of pirates who are trying to get to an island to find treasure. There's Fish Eye and his crew of two, and Captain Harshley with a crew of about seventy. This sounds like a typical pirate story, until you add in werewolves and some other enemies.
The story is pretty slow moving, but the action really picks up in the last third of the book. It leaves off on a cliffhanger and I wanted to know what happened next. The e-book had the first two chapters of the next book and it seems like that one will be even better.
Even though it's a slow moving story, the characters are great. The point of view switches between a bunch of different people within both crews, but it's very well done and I never had to double check to find out who was talking.
I'd recommend it for fans of adventure stories and/or pirates.

Well, that was an exciting read!! I strayed away from my usual genre, YA, and was a bit hesitant going into this book. Let me tell you, Captain Fish-Eye and Shrimp completely stole my heart. I love both of them! This story had characters that felt real to me, they weren't just standard archetype characters. They had feelings and emotions and sometimes they weren't always perfect. Awesome! :)
I loved the description in this book. If you love books that totally play out like blockbuster movies in your head, then I recommend this book!! I could visualize everything that happened and there was never a dull moment.
The only reason this book is getting four stars is because of the ending, it seemed a bit rushed. I know this is supposed to be a series of books but it could probably been handled a little better. All in all, it was a great book :)
I would definitely recommend this book to young and old alike. Isaiah T. Silkwood did a fantastic job of weaving several intricate tales into the story line that I was very impressed and pleasantly surprised with! The characters are very imaginative and original.
The story is about a none too sharp-witted captain of a small dingy called Fish Eye and his gullible and sweet first mate, Wokey the Shrimp. The two leave on an adventure to find a lost treasure of pearls on an island, but due to a series of misadventures, they find themselves stranded there among various deadly foes, such as: werewolves, giants and cannibals!
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down until I finished it. Warning: it leaves you hanging at the end, wanting the rest of the story, which will be continued in the next release by Isaiah T. Silkwood. I can't wait! A great "clean" read for young and old alike!
Well if you like a good movie, or a book that plays out like a movie in your mind, then read on. Characters of unsure hope to instilled hope, as well as good hearted to down right self engulfed evil. Characters that en spire, to characters that you would like to see get the #### kicked out of them and then some! Haha! I was pulled into the story of unknown by sights, sounds, smells, laughter, and wanting to know what would happen next. The spectrum of characters is intense and colorful. Looking forward to the sequel as the author expands on the thrill of the ride!. Thank you!.
Isaiah T. Silkwood paints an intriguing picture of the world he has developed. He quickly invites you to join him as we follow the adventures of Captain Fish Eye and his first mate Shrimp (whose names still baffle me, but I enjoy them), along with the exciting subterfuge seen on the pirate ship The Harsh One. Shilkwood's narrative and dialogue skills are still very much that of a novice author and can be an obstacle in engaging in the story at some points, especially when the characters speak in an accent or dialect. However, his story is saved by his characters, one of the strongest aspects of this novel. The simpleness of Fish Eye and Shrimp is somewhat disconcerting at the beginning, but throughout the novel they become more complex and you cannot wait to learn all about them. Silkwood displays the relationships of individuals excellently. Everyone feels differently about those surrounding them, though their narrative voices throughout the novel are often very similar, and Silkwood has crafted these relations in such a way that you can love or hate a character based on how a different character feels. You may not particularly like Fish Eye himself, but you begin to care for him because of how much Shrimp cares for him. You may not mind Captain Harshley, but because of Clause's strong feelings towards him you also begin to hate him. And who could not hate such an inhuman character as Harshley? Silkwood also makes an excellent use of symbolism throughout this book. Most readily obvious are the uses of Gully the Seagull and Captain Harshley's whip. For those who have not read the book I will say no more, except to think about when these symbols show up and what they might reveal about the theme of the book or the characters.
Overall I enjoyed this book, while it is obviously still the work of a novice author it is well presented and you can see the time and effort invested within the pages. I look forward to watching Silkwood grow as a writer and can't wait to read book two.
Funny, adventurous, and full of mystery and mutiny. My favorite characters out of all the perspectives we are bounced from are Fish Eye, Shrimp, Thrope, and Clouse; they are so full of life. I am excited for a second book. This one ended with quite a cliff-hanger!
So here's my totally honest review. I'm a major book reader and a writer, I love books that intrigue me and that is just what this book did. It intregued me. The way werewolves were implemented into the story I think is brilliant and well done. This book gives you a real sense of adventure and excitement. (and yes I was humming the Pirates of the Carribbean theme the entire time I was reading.) I felt like I was stepping into a world still filled with pirates, treasure, and mystery. The way Isaiah managed to write and describe the accents of the characters is also still astounding to me, I personally have never been able to imagine the accent of a character so well until I read his book. I'd like to also point out how beautifully but subtly he included Providence within the story, I truly admire that. I would recommend anyone of any age to read Of Pirates and Werewolves as it is appropriate for even young children. It was a whirlwind of a read and I cannot wait for the next one!
When you read a novel that is outside of your typical reading genre, and the worst thing that you can say about it is that the wait for book two might be rough, I believe that the book has earned the 5 stars.
I thoroughly enjoyed Isaiah's book. His writing style is fun and imaginative. He brings in little extras that the vast majority of his readers will enjoy. The description is thorough enough that you really get a feel for the setting and characters, without giving so much that you cannot let your imagination run with it.
I do not give ANY spoilers of any kind, so to those of you reading this review, this is all you get...this book is great, do not miss it.
I absolutely enjoyed all the characters, particularly the main three. There is Fish-Eye and his first mate Shrimp, two hilarious friends in search of the legendary black pearl. Third mate Thrope, who is a werewolf desperate to become human again... and that black pearl may be his only way back to normal. Cannibals and giants roam the mysterious island. Captain Harshley and his mutonous crew are in search of treasure on the same mysterious island.
That isn't all, though. Chaos is everywhere, and Fish-Eye somehow gets himself and his friends in and out of trouble in the most ridiculous ways.
I really liked this book. It had a lot of humorous moments and I found myself squirming in my seat with anticipation when Fish-eye and Shrimp ever found themselves in danger. The story started very well and painted out Fish-eye and Shrimp very well also. I liked the voice of the book and the overall story was awesome. Can not wait to read the second book!

Hilarious from start to finish! This book had me struggling to stay up straight I was laughing so hard. And it was suspenseful, too. I enjoyed every point-of-view, getting to know all the main characters, a few side characters. That Fish-Eye was a real character with quite a personality. I am hoping a book two is coming up -- I will be watching out for it.
